  • How Changes to 529 Plans Could Fund Your Retirement | Queer Money Ep. 422

How does the new law change affect excess 529 plan funds? In December 2022, SECURE Act 2.0 was signed into law to enhance retirement savings opportunities for Americans.

One of the changes will have a big impact on 529 plans and what can be done with the investments in the plan.

The change will allow 529 plan funds to be moved directly into the plan beneficiary's Roth IRA.

So, what are 529 plans and how can they be used?

On this week's show, we invite Paul Curley of The 529 Plan Conference to share with us the changes and how these may benefit LGBTQ youth and those thinking about retirement.

  • The Best Gay City to Live in New Mexico | Queer Money Ep. 421

Nuclear bombs, aliens, chili peppers oh my! As George Takkai would say.

This state ranks as the #7 state when it comes to the population thinking that homosexuality should be accepted by society ahead of California and New York!

It's also becoming one of the best retirement destinations for LGBTQ+ couples.

Of course, we're talking about New Mexico! But is New Mexico a state that is affordable for queer folks to live?

We'll share the top two based the data we've pulled from The Human Rights Campaign's Municipal Equality Index, city-level cost of living, the US Census data on incomes and Zillow's data on housing and rent prices.

  • Does the LGBTQ+ Community Still Have Corporate Allies? | Queer Money Ep. 420

2023 has been quite the year for the LGBTQ+ community.

There are over 500 state and local level bills being pushed to limit the rights of the LGBTQ community, limit our voices in politics and erase us from view.

We are especially seeing this play out with corporations. From seeing Disney being attacked for their standing by the community to Anheuser Busch being cancelled by the Religious Industrial Complex due to the Bud Light partnership with transgender entertainer Ddylan Mulvaney partnership.

This raises many questions about the whether we will see corporations who have been advocates and supporters of the community go silent and pull financial support where it is desperately needed.

To discuss this we chat with Joel Dantas-Shoemaker of Q.Ditital, the ower of LGBTQ+ Nation, Queerty and Into publications.
