The first episode (from years ago) was so good, we had to run it back with Hector Carvajal, who's founder of Don Carvajal Café. He's actually the first guest that has been featured twice on this podcast.

Hector is an Afro-Latino entrepreneur on a mission to reimagine the specialty coffee market. He was born on a small farm in the Dominican Republic and returned there often while growing up in the Bronx, an experience that gave him a unique perspective on the coffee supply chain. After pursuing his education at CUNY-Guttman and the University of Rochester, Hector has returned to the Bronx to build a coffee business model that is both fair to producers and inclusive to consumers. In just two years, he’s taken the brand from operating out of a dorm room to a city-wide distribution network that roasts 500 pounds of beans each week.

This week, we have the pleasure of speaking with Lynsey Ayala, who is a NuYorican, Sacred Earth Medicine Curandera.

She's known for working with the energetics of entheogenic medicines and indigenous healing practices. Lynsey is a Soundscape Artist, land steward, educator and currently pursuing her masters in psychedelic assisted therapy. Lynsey is also the creator of BreadxButta, where all of these offerings intersect and manifest as living experiences.

This week, we have the pleasure of speaking with Daniella Sladen. When Daniella Sladen co-founded Zulu Pods with her husband Rob, she decided to build a company to revolutionize aerospace engineering and build a culture that was inclusive and family-friendly in hopes of transforming the industry entirely.
As one of few Latina women in the aerospace engineering field, Daniella knew changes in the industry would only happen if she initiated them herself. Her deep appreciation for diversity is reflected today in an accepting company culture she fosters that embraces people from different backgrounds and supports new mothers in the workplace—a theme of critical importance to her.

As the company's Co-Founder and CTO, Daniella comes to Zulu Pods with cross-functional experience in structures, thermals, and design engineering. With expertise in the gas turbine engine field, she has worked on the design of bearing compartments and external lubrication systems of various advanced military engines. 

Her superpower? Radical creativity in solving problems that others may not have even known were there. Daniella earned a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Central Florida. Before the inception of Zulu Pods, Daniella worked at a leading American aerospace manufacturer.

Thatiana was born and raised in the Bayside area of Queens, New York to parents from the Dominican Republic. She graduated magna cum laude from Pace University with a Bachelor of arts in communication studies.  

With 10+ years of experience in publishing, Thatiana is currently the editor-in-chief of Remezcla, where she leads editorial strategy, ideation, and execution for the media company, which focuses on the Latine cultural sphere. She joined Remezcla from Refinery29, where she launched the brand’s first Latinx cross-platform channel, Somos. She was also a beauty contributor, producing deeply reported beauty pieces and exclusive celebrity features. She has covered beauty through a wide lens, including product reviews, debunking beauty myths, and igniting conversations on inclusivity and diversity within the industry. Previous work also includes People en Español, where she launched Chica, Meredith's first brand targeting Latina millennials.

Dove co-founded the CROWN Coalition to advance anti-hair discrimination legislation called The CROWN Act. The CROWN Act, which stands for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair, is a law that prohibits racial discrimination based on natural textures and protective hairstyles including braids, locs, twists, and bantu knots.

According to their research, Black women’s hair is 2.5x more likely to be perceived as unprofessional. Read that again. 
Race-based hair bias and discrimination remains a systemic problem in the workplace, disproportionately impacting
Black women’s deserved employment opportunities and professional advancement – and it has to stop.
