  • Focus On The Least Amount You Need
Focus on the least amount that you actually need. This allows you to break free from the constraint of performance. You don’t necessarily need to always perform at the highest possible amount, you can do OK when you realize that you don’t need as much as what the world suggest you need.

  • Robust Insights Are Important
The most important way that we can teach good #science: “Take your time, and slow down.”
Having robust insights is important, and science is slow. Taking your time is part of the process.
The only way that you’re going to have robust insights is if you actually slow it down. Rushing will lead you to do things that you may find problematic in the future.
Take your time with everything that you do. It is okay to spend time on words. It is okay to think. It is okay to redo code many times over.

  • My Career Is Not For Me. What Do I Do?
and give you encouragement to just pursue things that you enjoy. I think we get fixated on the idea that we should have some sort of career to show that we are successful.
But, much of the best things that we do have a little to do with those things within our career. Further, often, what are the most enjoyable and interesting things that people do in their career are often non-typical. These enjoyable things and enjoyable moments are not what everybody else does.
Just have a good time, and then everything else figure it out on its own.

  • The Act Of Doing Research Sucks
we face in a Normas problem in research. On one hand, doing research is terrible. It’s not fun, and nobody really explains to you. How do you actually do it.
On the other hand, the benefit of doing research is vast and has enormous impacts beyond the researcher themselves.
How do you actually reconcile this? I think this provides a good case for the reciprocity project. If we can simply change the lever, just a little bit to encourage more people to get excited about research, and to love them selves for their doing it, we can change the world. The returns by getting people to feel OK about doing research likely will net much more than I can possibly do myself.

  • What It Means To Pursue Truth
I talk about pursuing truth, and what it means to pursue truth. I talk about the challenges of pursuing truth and culture that often does not want to hear that truth.
Ultimately, you have to pursue truth that makes the world a little bit better, whether other people understand or think I’m about truth in the same way, it doesn’t necessarily preclude you from pursuing that truth anyways.

  • Being happy and healthy requires management
Being happy and healthy requires you to manage your life. It requires you to often say no to some things, and spending time and resources on things that many people will find frivolous.
Requires you to think about those so-called wasted resources in a way that you can justify them.
It requires you to know that every day is not going to be happy, and you take steps towards making yourself happy and healthy, and it requires you to pay attention to who you are and how you feel, and constantly be adjusting how much you spend on managing yourself.

How can you make a positive change in your life? Much of the world is not fair, but you have to work within those confines
How do you improve yourself and what is that improvement look like? That improvement is generally 1% per year. if you make an improvement that is one percent prettier you’re doing OK.

  • It Doesn’t Get Easier, But It Gets Better
it never gets any easier. What changes is that? You get better at it.
The feeling of constantly pushing forward never goes away.
You do get better at what you’re doing.
But that feeling of pushing forward is the same. That’s where you have to try to embrace that feeling.
