Wisconsin La Crosse’s Luke Schroeder came into the national meet as the top seed in both the 60m Hurdles and the 200m Dash, he left the meet on crutches.
After suffering a heartbreaking fall in the hurdles preliminary road, Schroeder limped across the line, the rest of his championships in jeopardy. But La Crosse wanted to win, and they wanted to win big. So after a conversation with his coach, Schroeder warmed up for and ran the 200m dash prelims.
Twenty one seconds of agony later, he had qualified through to Saturday’s final. He limped off the track in obvious pain - a valiant effort but his weekend was surely over now. But on Saturday, after entering the Virginia Beach Sports Center on crutches, he cast them aside, and not only started the final, but finished fourth. He dove across the line, because slowing his own momentum was just too painful.
Some moments transcend the simple act of winning and losing, this was one of those selfless moments we cherish in sport. Hear all about it from Luke himself, on this episode of D3 Glory Days.
