Umzinto on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast came to a standstill during a community protest against the nomination of candidates for the Local Government in August. Yesterday, businesses and schools were closed due to security concerns. Residents barricaded roads with burning tyres and other debris. Police had to fire rubber bullets to disperse angry crowds. Meanwhile in Umlazi south of Durban, residents also protested and barricaded roads. The protesters set the local councillor's offices alight. Mbuso Mkhize reports....

Former KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu says the ANC informed him last week of his possible redeployment. Mchunu resigned as premier yesterday. Reports surfaced over the weekend that Mchunu had been ordered by the party's provincial leadership to hand in his resignation this week. He lost his position as provincial chairperson to Sihle Zikalala last year. He will be replaced as KZN premier by Transport MEC and deputy ANC provincial chairperson Willies Mchunu. Three people died while several others were injured in various parts of Kenya during opposition protests called to push for the resignation of the country's electoral commission officials. In Kisumu, Homa Bay and Siaya towns in the West of the country, some of the opposition strongholds, the protests turned violent as police pushed to stop the protests, which they have termed illegal. The opposition says the electoral commission as it is currently constituted, cannot be trusted to carry out a free and fair election. The commissioners have said they have not been found guilty of any wrong-doing and will therefore not resign. Sarah Kimani reports

Amathole District Municipality mayor, Nomasikizi Konza, and seven others implicated in a fraud and money laundering case have been released on bail by the East London magistrate's court in the Eastern Cape. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it has decided to approach the Supreme Court of Appeal, to apply for leave to appeal against President Jacob Zuma's so-called spy tapes judgement. Last month, the Pretoria High Court ruled that the decision to withdraw charges was irrational. The Executive Secretary at the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution (CASAC), Lawson Naidoo, however says it does not seem as if there are strong grounds for appeal. Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has denied abusing state resources to bring a Burundian woman into the country. A report in the Suday Times paper reported that she smuggled the 28-year-old into South Africa after flying from Waterkloof Air Force Base to the Democratic Republic of Congo to collect her. The woman was reportedly arrested for falsifying travel documents, which the minister's sister, who then worked in the Burundian embassy, had arranged for her. South Africans are being urged to expose and isolate those who promote violence during elections. President Jacob Zuma and different faith leaders led a National Prayer Day for peaceful local government elections in Durban yesterday.
