The leader of the EFF, Julius Malema, has called for transparency in housing allocation lists. Malema was addressing EFF supporters in Port Elizabeth that is part of the hotly contested Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. The Vice Chancellor of the University of the Free State, Professor Jonathan Jansen, and Professor Adam Habib, the Vice Chancellor of the University of the Witwatersrand, have called for better leadership and more participation from communities in dealing with the violence that is threatening to characterise the education sector in the country. Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has denied abusing state resources to bring a Burundian woman into the country. A report in the Suday Times paper reported that she smuggled the 28-year-old into South Africa after flying from Waterkloof Air Force Base to the Democratic Republic of Congo to collect her. The woman was reportedly arrested for falsifying travel documents, which the minister's sister, who then worked in the Burundian embassy, had arranged for her. An innovative housing pilot project has been launched in Mamelodi, east of Pretoria. An environmentaly-friendly structure is erected over an existing shack ensuring that the shack-owner does not have to relocate while their shack is being converted into a house. Tshwane Executive Mayor, Kgosientso Ramokgopa, says the coverted shacks, dubbed "the Lighthouse", take only four weeks to complete. Mineral Resources Minister, Mosebenzi Zwane, has told management at Impala Platinum Mine that his ministry will leave no stone unturned in determining the cause of fatal accidents at the mine. Last Tuesday a rock fall incident left one miner dead, while the other one remains trapped underground. The Southern African Confederation of Agricultural Unions is hosting its annual conference in Mbabane, Swaziland, this week. The two-day conference will see more than seventeen members of the union deliberate alternatives to changes brought about by Climate Change. The gathering comes amid a decrease in agricultural production due to the recent drought that has hit many countries in the SADC region. Farmers are now expected to seek solutions to this and many other challenges facing the agricultural sector. Abongile Dumako reports

Co-operative Governance Minister, David van Rooyen, says more emphasis will be put into training councillors after the elections. Van Rooyen was speaking at the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Special National Members Assembly in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. A South African rifleman was among 129 fallen UN peacekeepers honoured by the United Nations with the posthumous awarding of the Dag Hammarskjold medal for the fallen military, police and civilian personnel killed in 2015. SANDF soldiers Toto Tom Malashe was killed when his unit was ambushed while escorting a logistics convoy as part of their deployment with joint AU-UN mission in Darfur, Sudan. This was the 12th time in the last 13 years that the UN has honoured the passing of more than 100 blue helmets who lost their lives in the line of duty. Sherwin Bryce-Pease reports.
