Residents of Kgakala township near Leeudooringstaad in the North West are battling with high unemployment rates. This was key on a list of demands residents raised during their march against the Maqwassie Hills Municipality. The protest march turned violent and resulted in the arrest of nineteen people, after they looted shops belonging to foreign nationals. Mmaserole Molefe and Dyaell Gaetsewe compiled this report

The Higher Education Minister says the country's University system is largely functional and blamed fringe element for protests and violence on campuses that he believes could be linked to a broader political agenda. Speaking exclusively to SABC News in New York on the sidelines of a series of meetings with North American universities and foundations, Dr Blade Nzimande urged law enforcement assisted by a majority of students and communities to isolate and deal with those intent on creating chaos on campuses. The department of environmental affairs says it is studying the Supreme Court of Appeals' ruling which legalises domestic rhino horn trade, dismissing the department's bid to keep a ban on domestic trade in place. Thousands of South African rhinos have been slain in recent years to meet demand for the horn in Asian countries. The community of Skampaneng in Hammanskraal north of Pretoria is expected to meet with government officials today to resolve the violence. Community members have been protesting the demolition of their shacks by the Red Ants. Two people have been killed and three busses torched. One of the community members, David Sebothoma, says the Themba Police Station Commander met with them yesterday and promised that representatives from government will meet them this morning at nine. He joins us on the line to tell us more.

African unity is under the spotlight today (wednesday 25 May) as the continent celebrates 53 years since the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). A myriad of events are expected across the continent to commemorate Africa Day which represents the vision of the continent's founding fathers after having gained independence from their colonial masters. Teachers in volatile areas such as Masokona and Vyeboom have not returned to work, after receiving threats. This is despite the delivery of mobile classrooms to their schools.
