Former Cosatu General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi Vavi says goverment, the ANC and SACP have been behind his and union NUMSA's expulsion from Cosatu and the resulting disarray in the labour federation. Vavi said this at a media briefing in Johannesburg yesterday where he announced that he will not be making an appeal to next week's Cosatu National Congress that he be returned to his position. . Vavi was expelled from the labour federation in March this year for gross misconduct after he refused to back Cosatu's decision to axe NUMSA. His decision follows that of NUMSA that also abandoned its appeal saying it did not expect a successful outcome. Senior Political Reporter Busi Chimombe reports…

Lonmin shareholders have thrown the company a lifeline after approving the over 400 million dollar rights issue, to keep the company afloat and strengthen its balance sheet. This comes after the worlds-third largest platinum producer offered the shareholders 27 billion hugely discounted shares to raise the money. The company which faced a five-month strike last year, high input costs and crumbling platinum prices is now in the process of cutting about six thousand jobs as part of its plan to remain operational. The fire which has destroyed about 13 structures at Simons Town in False Bay in the Cape Peninsula has been contained. But Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services say while the situation has been brought under control for now, changing wind direction could again see the blaze flare up. Over 300 personnel including Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, Disaster Risk Management and the Navy, among others, were deployed contain the flames. Corbin August reports...

Mulder is the latest political leader to voice his concern about attempts to transform the university's' language policy. Multiple attacks less than 24 hours apart left scores dead in Nigeria. Two female suicide bombers have killed at least 15 people in a market in northern Nigeria's main city, Kano.
