Robots replacing human workers in the manufacturing was at the top of the agenda at the Manufacturing Indaba in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. The annual Indaba seeks to find solutions to the challenges faced by the sector. Speakers at the Indaba believe the use of robots is the future. The Indaba comes at the time the manufacturing sector continues to shrink. In the first quarter results released by Statistics South Africa, manufacturing production fell by 6.4 percent. The Economic Freedom Fighters has accussed the energy minister Jeff Radebe of attempting to conceal planned looting by the Independent Power Producers. It says that it has submitted questions to the minister, but minister Radebe has failed to answer most of them. The EFF says it will write to the speaker of Parliament and the Presidency to demand immediate full disclosure of all companies that were awarded IPP contracts. The IPPs are expected to add 2,300 megawatts of electricity to the national grid over the next five years. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to the EFF member of Parliament Mbuyiseni Ndlozi.

The Unemployed People Movement says it is unfortunate that government has decided to bar them from taking part in the Jobs Summit which aims to discuss challenges around lack of jobs and the economy. The organisation says government is refusing to listen to the people who are directly affected by joblessness but chooses instead to engage with business and labour. President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the much anticipated gathering in Midrand this afternoon. The dire jobs situation is reflected in the Quarterly Labour Force Survey released by Statistics South Africa for the second quarter of 2018.

The community of Westbury in Johannesburg has welcome the deployment of the Tactical Response Team by Police Minister, Bheki Cele this morning. Cele says his members have identified at least 20 top priority criminals in that community. He addressed residents at the launch and reinforcement of the TRT which will help fight the scourge of drugs and gang-related violence. Cele also urged the community to assist the police in identifying alleged drug lords while promising to guarantee their safety through the witness protection programme.

Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene says he refused to sign the guarantee for the Nuclear build Programme because it would have had lasting financial implications for the country for decades. Nene is giving testimony at the state capture commission of inquiry in Parktwon Johannesburg. He says it didn't seem wise to approve such a commitment in the absence of a proposed financial model and feasibility study. There Nuclear built Programme was estimated to cost over a trillion rand. He says he was criticised by former President Jacob Zuma and other colleagues for refusing to approve the Nuclear build Programme:

The government of Lesotho is adamant that it wants to protect the country's economy by introducing legislation that forces the producers of wool and mohair to sell to one broker who happens to be Chinese. The producers have been selling their wool and mohair to brokers in South Africa including BKB at the Port Elizabeth Wool Exhange in the Eastern Cape. But now there are government legislated regulations that ban individuals from exporting their own produce. Data contained in hard drives carrying Gupta-linked emails will be used as evidence in the State Capture commission. Chairperson of the Commission, Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo made the ruling at the inquiry in Parktown in Johannesburg. An application was brought forward by the commission's legal team asking Justice Zondo to allow it to submit hard drives as evidence. The hard drives, obtained by two whistleblowers, contained emails and communication between the Guptas and representatives of government and state owned enterprises. Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina insists that the city will expropriate land without compensation. Masina made the announcement yesterday saying the decision is aimed at serving the public interest and that this is their way of dealing with problems around the issue of housing. Parliament has held public hearings all around the country to hear the public's contributions on the expropriation of land without compensation and is yet to make a final decision on this. This, with the view of possibly amending Section 25 of the Constitution which will allow land to be taken. Krivani Pillay spoke to Masina.

The residents of Westbury in Johannesburg are accusing all police officers at the Sophiatown police station and they want all of them to be moved. They alleged that officers are colluding with criminals. At least two people have been injured after police fired rubber bullets outside the station in an attempt to disperse protesting residents. The protest follows widespread community outrage after a mother was killed and her child critically injured. They were caught in crossfire during an alleged gang shootout.
