Kimberley in the Nothern Cape is still under under a tota shutdown this afternoon. Hundreds of residents from surrounding areas have taken to the streets again today to protest against alleged corruption on the part of the Sol Plaatjie Municipality's Chief Financial Officer and the Municipal Manager. They are accused of irregularly granting a 1.2 million rand tender to a PR company. Some people were stranded this morning and could not go to work. Our reporter Neo Bodumela is monitoring the situation in Galeshewe.

President Cyril Ramaphosa says meeting his Nigerian counterpart, Muhammadu Buhari, has opened up a new page of improved relations between the two countries. Frosty relations between South Africa and Nigeria have been blamed for lack of full implementation of more than 30 bilateral agreements signed between the two countries. President Ramaphosa undertook a one-day working trip to Abuja to rekindle relations dating back to the early 1960s when Nigeria supported liberation movements to end apartheid. Former president, Kgalema Motlanthe says those opposed to the expropriation of land without compensation are driven by their class interests. Montlanthe was speaking on our sister programme, Morning Live where he also addressed criticisms labelled against him and the recommendations made by the high-level panel on land reform. Net1, which is the parent company of Cash Paymaster Services (CPS), has denied that it is doing all it can to ensure that it continues to benefit from the distribution of social grants. CEO Herman Kotze says they are in fact looking forward to cutting ties with SASSA in September this year, when the contract comes to an end. This was in response to statements made by the Inter-ministerial Committee on Social Security Services, during a media briefing earlier today. Communication Minister Nomvula Mokonyane has also revealed that legal action is being taken against some CPS employees for allegedly trying to persuade grant beneficiaries to continue using its services. She says the South African Post office has so far migrated more than one point eight million beneficiaries to the new gold SASSA card and plans to migrate all of them by the end of August.

There is a strong police presence in the Kimberley CBD as residents protest against two Sol Plaatjie Municipality employees. Chief Financial Officer Lydia Mahloko and Municipal Manager Goolam Akhawaray, are accused of paying a communications company 1.2 million rand for a campaign that was notifying residents that tariff hikes would be implemented this month. Violence broke out earlier and police fired rubber bullets. Our reporter Neo Bodumela is on the story.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has applauded the Nigerian government for consulting widely before signing the African Continental Free Trade Agreement. Currently, 49 countries including South Africa have signed the agreement which seeks to allow the free movement of goods and people across the continent. It was adopted at the recent African Union Summit. This is seen as an important step to realise regional economic integration and increased intra-Africa trade. Ramaphosa says Nigeria joining other countries will help realise Africa's potential.

One of the founding members and minority shareholder of the VBS, Mr Madambi Muvhulawa say they are going to court to challenge what they call "A likely intention" to shut the mutual bank down. This after the South African Reserve Bank announced that it will prioritise the bank's retail depositors as the Venda-based mutual bank faces an uncertain future.
