Police in Johannesburg were on high alert last night in various hotspots around the city as revellers were out and about celebrating the New Year. Every new year's eve places like Hilbrow and Berea become hotspots for disorderly behaviour while several townships are hotbeds for the abuse and misuse of fireworks. Shocking details of badly decomposed bodies and corpses with missing body parts were revealed at the Life Esidimeni arbitration hearings in Parktown, Johannesburg. The often emotionally-charged hearings which started in October also heard how unlicensed and ill-equipped NGOs, with no experience in caring for psychiatric patients were forced to take more patients than they could care for. The Constitutional Court is expected to deliver a ruling on whether Parliament should initiate impeachment proceedings against President Jacob Zuma over upgrades to his private home in Nkandla that were found to be unconstitutional. In September, the court reserved judgment in the case that the EFF and other parties had brought.
