An employee at the state's Cullinan Care and Rahabilitation Centre in Pretoria has told the Life Esidimeni hearings that they were overwhelmed as they were forced to take in more patients than they could care for. They included adults who fell outside the category of patients Cullian looked after. The centre's mandate was to admit patients between the ages of three and 21. Cullinan then had to rapidly discharge certain patients who appeared stable, without proper assessments to NGOs. Some of them died at those unlicensed NGOs. Former President of the South African Society of Psychiatrists or SASOP- Mvuyiso Talatala says the Gauteng Health Department lied in court when it successfully fought off a legal battle to stop the transfer of mentally ill patients. SASOP took the department to court in March last year to stop the transfer of about 50 patients from Life Esidimeni to the Takalani NGO in Soweto. Former Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande, says he is still of the view that all poor and working class students should be provided with free education at tertiary level. His comments come after President Jacob Zuma released the Fees Commission Report yesterday. It recommends that students be funded through a cost-sharing model of government guaranteed loans from commercial banks. The report also recommends that students studying at TVET Colleges receive fully subsidised free education in the form of grants.
