South Africa is going through the birth pains of a new democracy but is likely to emerge stronger if it builds on its strengths. That's the view of deputy Secretary General of the United Nations Amina Mohammed who will deliver this year's annual Nelson Mandela Lecture at Cape Town's International Convention Centre on Saturday. Speaking exclusively to SABCNEWS in New York ahead of her departure for South Africa, Mohammed indicated she'd focus on the opportunity of what the new 2030 development framework provides and offer solutions that address the theme of this year's lecture: Centering Gender and reducing inequality through inclusion. Senior researcher at the Institute for Security Studies Dr Johan Burger says it's too early to say whether newly-appointed National Police Commission, Kehla Sitole, can handle the pressure of fighting crime in South Africa. President Jacob Zuma appointed the former Divisional Commissioner for Protection and Security Services to the position yesterday. The DA says it's not convinced that Sitole, is the best person to lead the police because he loyal to former commissioner Riya Phiyega. However, Parliament's Police Committee Chairperson Francois Beukman has welcomed Sitole's appointment saying he's capable of bringing stability to the SAPS.

Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown has denied allegations that she was instrumental in the suspension of four Eskom executives at the instigation of the Gupta family. Suspended Gauteng Mental Health Director, Dr Makgabo Manamela could face arrest if she again fails to appear at the Life Esidimeni hearings on Thursday. Arbitrator Justice Moseneke ordered that a warrant for her arrest be issued after she failed to arrive for her second day of testimony in Parktown, Johannesburg, following a grilling on Monday. Robert Mugabe resigned as Zimbabwe's president yesterday evening ending his four decades of rule. The 93-year-old had clung on for a week after an army takeover and expulsion from his own ruling ZANU-PF party, but resigned shortly after parliament began an impeachment process seen as the only legal way to force him out. Wild celebrations broke out at a joint sitting of parliament in Harare when Speaker Jacob Mudenda announced Mugabe's resignation and suspended the impeachment procedure.
