Taxi commuters have been advised to seek alternative transport on Wednesday morning due to a taxi strike. Taxi operators affiliated to the National Taxi Alliance will gather in Marabastad in Pretoria before marching to the Transport Ministry and the Union Buildings. The organisation is accusing the transport ministry of failure to address their long-standing concerns. They include the controversial Taxi Re-capitalisation programme, delays in the issuing of operating permits and the exclusion of the taxi industry from receiving public passenger transport subsidies. The Life Esidimeni Arbitration hearings into the deaths of 141 mentally-ill patients will resume in Parktown, Johannesburg this Wednesday morning. Lawyers involved in the arbitration have not succeeded in bringing three key witnesses, including Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu, to testify within the scheduled three weeks of the hearings. The sitting has since been extended. After resorting to subpoenas, it's now hoped that Mahlangu, suspended Mental Health Director Makgabo Manamela, and suspended Head of Department Barney Selebano, will at least appear this month, or early next month. Firefighters have spent the night battling a mountain fire in Gordon's Bay outside Cape Town. At least five houses have been burnt down but no lives have been affected. The state has wrapped up its cross-examination of Henri van Breda in the Cape Town High Court. The 23-year old Van Breda faced a grilling from the state and Judge Siraj Desai during his four days of cross-examination. He is accused of the murder of his parents and brother at their De Zalze Estate home two years ago. His sister was severely injured. Van Breda maintains that a masked axe-wielding intruder killed them. The triple murder accused has denied suffering selective memory loss when it comes to incriminating parts of the state's case against him. Thandiswa Mawu reports ..

Investigators in the United States are scouring the background of the deceased gunman who opened fire inside a church in Texas killing 26 people and injuring 20 more. Police have since confirmed that the gunman - identified as a former member of the Air Force - as having died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the vehicle he used to escape the scene of the attack. The gunman was reported to have used an assault-style rifle during the rampage at the Sutherland Springs First Baptist Church before he too came under fire from a local before fleeing the scene. The ANC-SACP bilateral ended at the ANC headquarters in Johannesburg on Monday night with an agreement to have another meeting later this month. The meeting was called to discuss unity and the functioning of the alliance with the SACP now decided to independently contest 21 wards at the Metsimaholo Local Municipality in the Free State This follows the Communist Party's call for President Jacob Zuma to step down and the subsequent removal of the SACP's General Secretary Blade Nzimande as Higher Education minister.
