The SADC Troika on Politics, Defence and Security has called for an urgent meeting of all SADC regional leaders to discuss the deepening political crisis in Zimbabwe. This follows the seemingly bloodless coup after the army announced that it is targeting what it calls criminals around President Robert Mugabe. President Jacob Zuma who is also the SADC chair arrived in Botswana last night for a Bi-National Commission with his Botswana counterpart, Seretse Khama Ian Khama. But the BNC is expected to dwell much into the Zimbabwean situation. Negotiations are reported to be continuing over the future of Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe who is under house arrest. Some reports say progress is being made towards a deal for him to resign. But Mugabe is said to be demanding guarantees and a dignified exit. Parliament's Public Enterprises Committee has sought to push back against what it says are Minister Lynne Brown's attempts to intimidate it. The committee, which is conducting an inquiry into Eskom, rejected Brown's letter in which she complains about how it is doing its work. There has been mixed reaction from some political parties in Parliament to the military intervention in Zimbabwe. The EFF supports what is calls a peaceful military intervention.The African People's Convention and the Freedom Front-Plus have also welcomed the intervention, while the DA wants Mugabe to resign. The SABC has reliably learnt that Zimbabwe is likely to have a transitional government after the army takeover. A deal has been proposed that dismissed former vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa should lead a transitional government that will be constituted of stakeholders from other political parties. President Robert Mugabe has been given an opportunity to negotiate an exit that includes state protection for him and his family. The two special envoys sent by President Jacob Zuma, as chairperson of SADC, to Zimbabwe held talks with stakeholders in Harare last night to chart a way forward for the country. The envoys, Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and Minister of State Security Bongani Bongo, arrived in Harare late yesterday.
