The official death toll of mentally ill patients could go up today when Health Ombudsman, Malegapuru Makgoba makes a second appearance to present his updated report at the Life Esidimeni Arbitration in Parktown, Johannesburg. Makgoba, who was the first witness to testify when the hearings got underway last month, had put the figure at 118, up from the 94 he had announced in February when he released his report into the deaths of the patients following their transfer to unlicensed NGOs. Later that week, Acting Gauteng Health HOD Enerst Kenoshi revealed that 141 patients had died. Evidence leader Patrick Ngutshana has confirmed that Makgoba will be back on the witness stand today

Award-winning investigative journalist Jacques Pauw says he is not deterred by continuous death threats on his life. Pauw was speaking at the official launch of his book "The President's Keepers last night at the Hyde Park Shopping Centre in Johannesburg. "The President Keepers" makes allegation about the abuse of money by the Revenue service, security agencies, and accuses President Jacob Zuma of being corrupt. Gauteng ANC chairperson Paul Mashatile has denied treating Emfuleni mayor Simon Mofokeng with kid gloves in the light of allegations of sexual grooming of a 14-year-old girl. Mofokeng has been placed on special leave by the ANC in Gauteng following the allegations against him. The DA claims Mashatile is shielding Mofokeng - who's also the ANC chairperson in the Sedibeng region because of the power he wields in Gauteng's Sedibeng region and the significant role he can play in Mashatile's faction within the ANC. Former Higher Education deputy minister, Mduduzi Manana, who has pleaded guilty to assaulting three women at a Johannesburg night club in August, has offered to compensate the women, do community service and pay a 100-thousand rand fine. His lawyer, Michael Motsoeneng Bill, has also asked that Manana be sentenced to 12 months imprisonment wholly suspended for 5 years, on condition he does not commit a similar offence during that period.
