Parliament on Tuesday heard how consultancy company Trillian Capital was paid hundreds of millions of rands by Eskom without a proper contract. A former executive of the company told parliament that one of the senior executives had made huge sums of money trading on knowledge that a minister of finance was going to be fired. A police task team in KwaZulu-Natal which is investigating taxi violence has taken over the investigation of a spate of recent killings in the province believed to be linked to taxi violence. In the last two weeks, eighteen people have died in incidents related to taxi violence. In the latest incident, the deputy chairperson of the Klipriver Taxi Association and his bodyguards were ambushed and killed in Ladysmith in the midlands. Mlondi Radebe reports….

Four of the eight former police officers who were involved in the killing a Mozambican immigrant - Mido Macia - will be appealing their conviction in the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein on Wednesday. Eight police officers were sentenced to fifteen years in prison after they dragged Macia for about five-hundred metres behind a police van in 2013. The SABC's Thabiso Radebe reports

The SABC has been issued with a strike notice from the two unions representing workers at the Public Broadcaster. In separate statements, the Broadcasting, Electronic, Media and Allied Workers Union (BEMAWU) and the Communication Workers' Union, CWU, say the strike will start on Thursday morning. Both unions had earlier agreed to delay issuing of a strike notice to the SABC in order to afford the CCMA an opportunity to mediate between the public broadcaster and the unions. BEMAWU president, Hannes du Buisson, says more than 80- percent of its members employed within the SABC are in favour of the strike, we also speak to SABC Spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago.

The South African Revenue Service has confirmed that its suspended second-in-command Jonas Makwakwa will return to work on Wednesday. In September 2016, the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) submitted a report to SARS flagging payments made into Makwakwa and co-worker, Kelly-Ann Elskie's personal bank accounts. SARS Commissioner Tom Moyane subsequently suspended the pair pending a full investigation. We speak to SARS Group Executive for Communications & Media, Luther Lebelo......

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) will go on an open tender process to find suitable service providers to take over the distribution of social grants. This follows a progress report by the Minister of Social Development Bathabile Dlamini on the payments of social grants in future. According to the Minister, the Post Office does not meet the requirements to fully take over the distribution of social grants. A specialist in social grants at the Centre for Social Development in Africa at the University of Johannesburg, Associate Professor Tessa Hochfeld believes for now there is no choice but to stick to current service provider, Cash Paymaster Services (CPS).

A former CEO of a Pretoria-based NGO has told the Esidimeni hearings how she continued withdrawing SASSA grants on behalf of some of the mentally-ill patients after they had died. Dorothy Franks says this was over and above receiving payment from the Gauteng Health Department. All of this happened after Franks' NGO, Anchor House, was shut down and she had quit as CEO. Like representatives of other NGOs that have already testified at the hearings, Franks admitted that she did not have the necessary experience and staff to care for mentally-ill patients. It's still unclear whether Kenyan President-Elect Uhuru Kenyatta's win will translate to stability returning to the East African country. Yesterday, he was officially declared the winner in the October 26 repeat elections with 98-percent of the vote. But his victory is clouded by poor voter turnout - with a record low of 38-percent of registered voters casting their ballots. Court challenges of the result are also imminent. Opposition leader Raila Odinga led a boycott against the fresh poll, that seemed to split the country in half.
