Today is International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The Studies in Poverty and Inequality Institute (SPII) has identified drivers of poverty in our country and what can be done to lessen poverty. This follows the recent release of the SA Poverty Trends Report, which found that over half of the population lives below the poverty line. The Justice Project South Africa has reacted with outrage to reports that vehicle licence fees could be hiked by up to 72 percent next year. The proposed increase has been published in a Government Gazette. The project has asked Transport Minister Joe Maswanganyi to justify the increase. According to the Gazette 72 rand will be added to all vehicle renewal fees as part of a transaction fee to be paid to the Road Traffic Management Corporation. Another incident of sexual assault has been reported at a Mamelodi East School in Pretoria. A17-year-old matric learner was allegedly raped by the scholar patroler in September during a matric dance event. Mahuba Valley Secondary School teachers walked in on the man during the rape. This comes after 87 Soweto pupils at AB Xuma primary were also sexually assaulted by a scholar patroller. Yesterday (Sunday), Gauteng Education officials met with parents and the AB Xuma school governing body. We speak to Gauteng education MEC, Lesufi Panyaza.

According to weekend media reports, the Water and Sanitation department wants to award the multi billion rand Umzimvubu water project tender to a hand picked Chinese company disregarding proper tender procedures. National treasury and Parliament are also reported to have previously warned the department that any deviation from laid out procuremnt procedures would be deemed irregular. The 20 billion rand Umzimvumbu water project in the Eastern Cape includes the construction of two dams, a hydropower plant at Laleni and bulk water distribution infrastructure. Kidnappings....That is the latest big organized crime to hit South Africa. There has been a series of kidnappings recently and it appears to be escalating. What is worrying is that these syndicates are becoming more daring and they are clearly sophisticated. Anti-crime activist,Yusuf Abramjee is warning that kidnapping syndicates have been operating for some time - taking their victims and demanding ransoms running into tens of millions of rands.
