The bird flu virus has now hit Johannesburg with over 500 birds culled since last month. The City of Johannesburg says several bird carcasses have tested positive for the H5N8 strain of the virus. Some birds at the Johannesburg Zoo have been affected, whilst carcesses have been found in popular parks including Zoo Lake and Emmerentia. Monte Casino Bird Gardens, north of Johannesburg, has been closed due to the outbreak. This is a viral disease that is highly contagious, but doesn't affect humans.
