Transport minister, Joe Maswangayi has directed law enforcement agencies to be on high alert after a spate of long weekend crashes claimed at least forty lives. Ten people were killed in Mpumalanga, seven in the Eastern Cape, four in KwaZulu-Natal and two people in Gauteng while deaths have also been reported in the Northern Cape. In Cepe Town, at least 40 drivers have been arrested for driving under the influence with one driver in Caledon being over six times over the legal limit.
