Thousands of commuters in both City of Tshwane and Cape Town may be left stranded due to strike action this morning. This as taxi drivers plan to march to the Union Buildings demanding that their traffic fines be scrapped. The planned strike is expected to affect commuters in Soshanguve, Mabopane , Ga-Rankuwa, Atteredgville and Mamelodi. Taxi owners are however against the planned strike and have committed to not providing their taxis in order for the drivers to blockade roads. 280 workers, who were fired 23 years ago, by the then Midrand Council, will now be employed by the City of Johannesburg. The dismissals, effected in 1994, followed a strike by municipal workers against corruption and nepotism within the council. The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU), in collaboration with the City, believes that this historic bargain will vindicate the honest workers who suffered at the hands of an administration which preferred protecting corrupt officials. Human Rights Foundation - iLungelo Lakho - with the support of the SACP and its Youth League, will picket outside the Johannesburg High Court this morning against evictions and illegal house dispossession. The group, which represents evictees from across Gauteng, says they have been evicted from properties they had occupied for decades under apartheid where black people were denied freehold tittles. They now intend on taking the matter to the Constitutional court alleging their houses are being sold without their notice at below the market value. The Standing Committee on Public Accounts - SCPOA - in Parliamnet is this morning expected to visit SASSA Headquaters to exercise its oversight role over the social security agency. Social Development Minister, Bathabile Dlamini, last week wrote a letter to National Assembly Speaker, Baleka Mbete complaining that Sassa should not be interrogated by Scopa over the new social grant payment contract as it is still at a sensitive stage.
