The ANC in Kwa-Zulu-Natal and the Free State have welcomed the decision by the party to halt all provincial conferences. ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe has written a letter to all provincial branches saying it has a deadline of September 30 to convene planned elective conferences. This is in preparation for the party's National Conference in December, where a new ANC president will be elected.

Members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), who were on an underground strike for better salaries at the Kimberley Ekapa Mining Joint Venture (KEM JV), have now agreed to come out. By last night it was not clear exactly when the miners will surface. According to NUM's Kimberley Regional Organiser, Orapeleng Moraladi, a total 158 of their members initially went on an underground hunger strike last Friday for five days. In the five days, 33 had to be rescued due to health complications, while the remaining 125 have now agreed to surface. we speak to NUM President, Piet Matosa.

The provision of quality health care in the North West is again under the spotlight with another woman claiming to have suffered the indignity of giving birth unattended at the Jouberton Community Health centre, near Klerksdorp last week. The woman alleges she was forced to give birth in a room unsuitable for delivery. She says was left unattended during labour and her cries for help ignored. When the nurse came, about 45 minutes later, she was ordered to walk to another room with her newborn baby still hanging between her legs. Sisi Segalo reports....

Suspicions have once more been raised following a second fire of its kind that destroyed a wing of the Mthatha Magistrate's Court in the Eastern Cape yesterday afternoon. This follows a similar fire at another court building in the nearby town of Mnqanduli where its believed court documents and computer hardware were destroyed. Police spokesperson, Mzukisi Fatyela says all prisoners who were making their appearances in court are back in their holding cells as investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing. we speak to our reporter who has been following this story in the area, Zimkhitha Manqinana.

Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs says it expects Minister Hlengiwe Mkhize to brief it soon on her decision to suspend her director-general, Mkhuseli Apleni. Apleni says he will challenge his suspension. He was placed on precautionary suspenson for failing to arrange a meeting between Mkhize, and her staff. Aplenis' lawyer, Sandile July, earlier said his client received a notice of intention to suspend him last week. We speak to the committee's chairperson Lemias Mashile.

Home Affairs Director-General Mkuseli Apleni has been suspended. In a statement, the Home Affairs Minister, Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize stated that Apleni has been placed on precautionary suspension with immediate effective.
