There are over six thousands disused gold, chrome, diamond and platinum mines across South Africa that have created a thriving underground economy. One mining expert believes the illegal underground mining industry supports thousands of people above ground in small mining towns like Welkom where at least 34 "zama zamas" were killed in an underground explosion last week. Wits University anthropologist Prof. Robert Thornton, who specialises in studying illegal mining, says illegal mining has a very big impact on the economies of mining towns. Millions of rands in sex, food and alcohol is being traded in secret underground cities.

A meeting involving national leaders of coalition parties in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro ran late into the evening last night. The meeting between the DA, UDM, COPE and the ACDP was meant to decide the future of the deputy mayor, UDM's Mongameli Bobani in the coalition. Executive major, Athol Trollip had earlier sacked Bobani from the position of the Head of Public Health in the Mayoral Committee. It's been reported that Trollip now intends on tabling a motion that will strip Bobani of his deputy mayor title. Bobani and Trollip have been at logger heads since the formation of the coalition last year.

Backyard dwellers will be among those who will be prioritised by government when giving assistance on housing. This is according to promises by the Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Paul Mashatile when he met with residents of Finetown and Ennerdale yesterday afternoon. The meeting follows recent protests over housing that erupted in the area. Mashatile said there are plans to obtain private land near Finetown as well as government land which will be earmarked for housing development.
