Chaos erupted at Fort Hare University campus in East London after the Vice Chancellor allegedly refused to respond directly to students demands. A memorandum of demands was handed over last week listing in-sourcing of cleaners and security guards, high cost of residences as well as an implementation of a shuttle service at the institution. Students allege that some of these issues were agreed to by the former Vice Chancellor, Dr Mvuyo Tom. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to University spokesperson, Lizo Phithi, for the latest developments.

The Broadcasting, Electronic, Media & Allied Workers Union (BEMAWU), which is the biggest labour union at the SABC, has questioned the statement by the Public Broadcaster that it is under financial strain and that retrenchments may be on the cards. The labour union further says its perturbed by SABC management playing the victim whilst they are solely to blame for the state the SABC finds itself in. Blinkwater Mills has agreed to pay the Competition Commission more than R10 million as a settlement for price fixing. Blinkwater, together with 11 other companies, were found to have colluded in the pricing of white milled maize products. Kagiso, our listener in Thaba Nchu in the Free State calls to tell us that he works at a school for the deaf and blind and that they have not been paid since January this year. He says NEHAWU (for which he is the Chairperson of) took the matter to the Department of Education but to no avail. The Department has apologised and said the money will be transferred within a week but that still has not happened. Kagiso claims this is not the first time that this has happened. The school experienced the same problems in December last year. Kagiso shared his frustration with Sakina Kamwendo.

The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) is seeking reparations for municipalities following collusion in the procurement of infrastructure for the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup. Several construction companies were fined over 1.4 billion by the Competition Commission for anti-competitive behaviour. It's since emerged there might have been a settlement agreement reached between the companies and government. Some of the people who will be directly and negatively affected if social grants are not paid in two weeks' time are the Disabled People South Africa (DPSA). The National Chairperson for DPSA, Robert Masambo, says the announcement that the grants will be paid by the 1st of April is not enough. He says the DPSA is anxious over the SASSA crisis.
