High- level politicians and friends visited anti-apartheid struggle stalwart Ahmed Kathrada at a Johannesburg hospital last night. The 87 year old Rivonia trialist's condition deteriorated sharply yesterday. Kathrada was hospitalised earlier this month for surgery related to blood clotting on the brain. He has since experienced several post-operation complications and has pneumonia affecting both lungs, rendering his condition serious. About 17 million SASSA beneficiaries are counting down to receiving their social grants on the 1st of April. The Constitutional Court has given Cash Paymaster Service (CPS) a go ahead to distribute grants after it declared its contract invalid. The Department of Social Development and SASSA have both issued a statement that it is all systems go for the payment of grants from the first of next month.
