Heavy rains in the Northern Cape have claimed the lives of four people near the Augrabies Falls national park near Kakamas. Four farm workers are believed to have been swept away in the Orange River and drowned. Police have retrieved three bodies. The search for the fourth body is continuing. Lerato Segalo reports

Three women, two from Doornpoort, north of Pretoria and another one from the North-West Province, are reported dead due to malaria. The three, are said to have not been in a malaria prevalent area. One of the dead woman's husband is understood to be also infected. Professor Tiaan de Jager, Director at the University of Pretoria's Institute for Sustainable Malaria Control, at the University of Pretoria says the recent abnormal rainfall and change in climate have created favourable conditions for mosquitoes to breed. Director of the Wits Malaria Research Institute, Prof Maureen Coetzee, raises alerts about their recent discovery of a new type of mosquito that is threatening to spread malaria in the country.
