Former African Union Commission Chairperson, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, is making her presence felt ahead of the ANC's Elective Conference in December. She is considered a front runner together with Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa for the top position. One of the four NGOs with the highest death rates of patients from the Life Esidimeni Centre, closed its ranks and gates to the media yesterday (Thursday). The Cullinan Care Rehabilitation Centre was listed in the report of the Health Ombudsman as one of four centres where 80% of the 94 patients died after being moved. The other centres were Takalani, Tshepong and the Hephzibah Centres. The Ombudsman Professor Malegapuru Makgoba, found that the 94 patients died of cold‚ hunger and thirst at the 27 NGOs. For every death in a hospital‚ there were 19 deaths at NGOs. Liela Magnus reports

Former President FW De Klerk says South Africa is on the wrong road constitutionally. He says since the ANC's conference in Polokwane in 2007, the government has trundled aimlessly down the road to societal decline. He says government is determined to accelerate the country's descent along the road to state capture, economic crisis and racial confrontation. He was speaking at the annual conference of the FW De Klerk Foundation to mark 27 years since his 1990 speech in which he announced the unbanning of political organisations and release of political prisoners. The South African Social Security Agency, Sassa, says it will approach the Constitutional Court to suspend the declaration of current contract with Cash Paymaster Services for payment of social grants invalid for another year. This will allow the agency to continue paying grants after March. This, after Sassa could not find an alternative payment system in the time stipulated. The agency has told MPs that none of options it has looked at so far will resolve its problems by the end of March. Joseph Mosia reports.
