Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu has resigned. This in the wake of a damning report that implicates her and several high ranking officials of her department with regard to the deaths of 94 psychiatric patients. Most of them died while kept at various NGO's across the province. The Health Ombudsman Professor Malegapuru Makgoba has handed over the report to national health minister Aron Motsoaledi. The report contains the findings and recommendations of the probe conducted late last year following the death of scores of psychiatric patients. Phanuel Shuma reports.

Some African countries have spoken out against a draft African Union document that urges member states to collectively withdraw from the International Criminal Court. Last year South Africa, The Gambia and Burundi announced their intent to withdraw from the ICC. However Nigeria and other African states say they believe the court has an important role to play in holding leaders accountable. Former top prosecutor Gerrie Nel starts work today (1st February) as head of AfriForum's Private Prosecutions Unit.
