Former Northern Cape ANC chairperson, John Block and Trifecta Director, Christo Scholtz, are preparing for leave to appeal against their 15-year jail sentences. The duo have been sentenced to an effective 15-years imprisonment in the High Court in Kimberley. In her sentencing, Judge Mmathebe Phatsoane pointed out that there shouldn't be two separate justice systems for the rich and the poor. Block and Scholtz were convicted on charges of corruption and money laundering. The court found that Block and Scholtz had a corrupt relationship, with Block using his political muscle to secure government lease agreements on behalf of the Trifecta companies, at inflated prices. Close to 2-million South African children who qualify for a social grant are still not accessing it. That's according to the 2016 Child Gauge report. About six thousand workers in the poultry industry are at risk of losing their jobs as cheap chicken imports from the European Union, Brazil and the US continue flooding the South African markets. Today workers affiliated to the Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU) took to the streets in Pietermaritzburg and marched to the provincial legislature. Already Rainbow Chicken - the second biggest poultry farm in South Africa - is to retrench one thousand two hundred and fifty workers from its Hammarsdale farm near Pietermaritzburg as it can't compete with cheap chicken imports. A 15-year-old suspect is expected to appear at the Stellenbosch Magistrate's Court today (Wesnesday) on charges of assault following an alleged bullying incident at the local Luckhoff Secondary School. A video has gone viral on social media showing the attacker pulling her victim's hair, slapping her and slamming the girl's head against her own knees. Meanwhile a second video showing a violent bullying incident in front of pupils has surfaced. The opponents of genetically modified maize should brace themselves as more such grain will soon form part of our staple food. According to the South African Cereals and Oilseeds and Trade Association (SACOTA), there is an agreement between the country and the United States for importing genetically-modified white and yellow maize to meet the local demand. A Kwa-Zulu Natal nurse has has pledge to support a newborn baby found hidden under the seat of a minibus taxi at the Pavilion shopping centre. The PAC is calling for Robert Sobukwe Day to be declared a public holiday. Every year, the PAC celebrates Sobukwe's life on his birthday, the fifth of December. The family of the late renowned Gospel musician - Sfiso Ncwane - say they are putting everything before the Lord during this difficult period. The award-wining gospel sensation died of kidney failure at a Johannesburg hospital yesterday morning (Monday 05/12). Ncwane was best known for his songs of praise which include 'Kulungile Baba' and Bayede Baba. Neliswa Mavundla reports
