  • Bowen says percentage of fuel stations out of fuel is in 'low single digits'

The Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet has asked Treasury to model "new levy options" as a means of taxing windfall profits of gas companies, as the government tries to shield Australians from the economic impacts of the conflict in the Middle East.

Fuel prices have risen sharply around the world since Iran began its effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz - a key shipping route for about a fifth of the world's oil.

The federal government yesterday launched a task force to manage fuel supply, while the ACCC announced a probe into price gouging.

  • Israel confirms it did not tell the US it was going to strike Iran's South Pars facility

Energy prices have been soaring, as Iran's effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues and after Israel struck Iran's South Pars facility - the largest natural gas field in the world.

But in developing news overnight, the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel will hold off on any further attacks on the gas field, following a request form the US President.

Meanwhile Israel's Haifa oil refinery has been damaged by what Israeli media describes as fallen shrapnel - following missile barrages from Iran.

  • South Australians election tomorrow 'first test' for One Nation polls

South Australians have been swarming polling booths this week ahead of the state election tomorrow.

According to the polls and pundits, the Labor government of Premier Peter Malinauskas is set to be returned with a sizeable majority.

But the opposition benches could look very different; with a surging One Nation confident of securing multiple seats.

  • 'He's sitting very comfortably': How Iran war benefits Putin

They say in war, there are no winners - but far away from the conflict in the Middle East, one leader may be quietly cashing in.

As the Iran conflict drives up oil prices and shifts global focus, Moscow could be emerging as a beneficiary.

  • Global economic impacts of Middle East gas field strikes

Energy prices have sharply surged on global markets following Israeli strikes on Iran's South Pars gas field - the world's largest natural gas reserve.

Iran has retaliated with strikes targeting major energy infrastructure inside Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

US President Donald Trump says America knew nothing of Israel's attack on South Pars - promising that Israel will launch no more attacks on Iranian oil infrastructure.

Almost three weeks after Israel and the US began its bombing campaign on Iran, the country's brutal theocratic regime remains in power.

It's raised concerns about the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Iran, just months after a crackdown on protests saw tens of thousands of people reportedly killed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

  • Changing Australia: Rob Pascoe and building a circular economy

Waste not, want not, as the saying goes.

Rob Pascoe has made it a life mission.

The recycling movement that began in the 1970s and '80s has evolved into the concept of a circular economy today, where products are designed to be reused, repaired and recycled.

Before the notion of a circular economy was widely understood, Rob left a marketing career behind to set up Closed Loop — a pioneer in solutions to meet the circular challenge.
