  • Analysts warn US 'hasn't learned lessons from history'

US President Donald Trump has warned, "heavy and pinpoint bombing" will continue uninterrupted for as long as necessary to achieve the "objective" of peace in the Middle East.

But that objective has been called naive by some analysts, with one Democratic congressman warning the White House doesn't have an endgame, and hasn't learned the lessons of history.

    • GUEST: Joel Rayburn, Senior Fellow at the Hudson Institute's Center for Peace and Security in the Middle East, retired US Army officer, former diplomat and historian who served as US Special Envoy for Syria

There have been celebrations across parts of Tehran and cities across the world after US and Israeli strikes killed Iran's Supreme Leader - Ayatollah Ali Khamenei - with the future of the Islamic Republic thrown into uncertainty.

US President Donald Trump has urged the Iranian people to take over their government.

US-Israeli strikes on Iran have continued for a second day, following the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior leaders. Iran has retaliated by firing missiles and drones at Israel, as well as targets across the Gulf Arab states.

Dozens of people have been killed in Iran and Israel, while the US has confirmed three American soldiers have been killed.

Meanwhile, Iran has selected a 66-year-old cleric to join the country's three-member leadership council until a new supreme leader is selected.

And the Tasmanian salmon industry has until Monday to prove to the federal regulator it should be allowed to continue using the antibiotic florfenicol to treat diseased fish stock, or risk having their emergency permits revoked.
