Rainy days, thunder storm sounds, rain sounds, rain and thunder sounds, rain storm sounds. These are all terms which are thrown around the internet a lot. So much so, that they all begin to blend into one. Rain and Thunder sounds are however, different.

It may help to think of them in the metaphorical sense. Rain is the sound which is produced when water is falling down from the sky. Thunder is the sound which is made from the clashing of lightning and thunder together. These two sounds are distinct. That is why we use the term Rain and Thunder, to differentiate the two sounds. Most of the time people record the Rain and then the Thunder to go with it. This is fine but it makes it more difficult for you to find both at once.

So, how does one record the two sounds and then put them together and make rain storm sounds? What you will need are a couple of microphones, a mixing desk and the ability to edit pieces together.

Preparing your microphones The first thing you should do is prepare your microphones. If you are going to record the rain you will need a decent pair of microphones. Make sure that the microphones are very close to you, this will help with the effect.

Second, turn off any amplification or echo on the microphones. We recommend using a 1/3′′ to 1/8′′ cable to connect the microphone(s) to your mixing desk. This will allow the microphone to be amplified with a separate channel.

Third, run the microphones through a 1/8′′-1/4′′ audio splitter. This will allow one channel of the mix to be sent to the microphone and the other channel to be sent to the mixing desk.

Fourth, record the rain hitting the microphone.

Fifth, once it has stopped, record the thunder.

Sixth, once your thunder has faded away, record the rain again.

Seventh, once the rain has stopped, process both channels and then put them together.

There you have it, rain and thunder sounds. It is very simple to do. It is being conducted on a professional level. That being said, even professionals get it wrong sometimes and fail to record the relevant sound and combine them in the right way.

Have you ever heard a recording which has had the rain drowned out by the thunder or vice versa? That is not a good sound. Pure rain storm sounds are one of the best sounds to have on a stage. There is nothing better to hear than someone in the back row dancing to the music, soothed by the sound. They might not know what is actually going on but they are enjoying themselves. That is what keeps the audience clapping for more.

So, next time you go to a performance of a band which plays loud music, make sure that you have an ear towards the back. It could be that a group at the back will make your ears pop, but it is worth it.
