Do you know who this fellow is? Here he’s in a costume for an acting role, but he’s Al Shean, one half of the vaudeville team of Gallagher and Shean. In 1922 they had a smash hit with their sketch “Mr. Gallagher and Mr. Shean.” You’ll hear both sides of their one and only record and hear some interesting information about Al. We’ll also be celebrating blues singer Lillian Glinn’s birthday.  Jacques Renard’s birthday is not until May 30, but owing to an error, he’ll be getting an early birthday segment this week. Do you know who these fellows are? They’re the Savoy Quartet, an important transitional group between ragtime and jazz. They produce a *lot* of sound for just the four of them as you’ll hear in the final segment of this week’s edition of Rapidly Rotating Records. That segment is all about captains, but we’ll also be celebrating the birthdays of Fisher Hendley and Teddy Bunn. National Barbershop Quartet Day was last month on April 11, so I decided to have a different secular black male vocal group start off each segment of this week’s show, with the subject of their song be the segment topic. The group pictured above is the Golden Gate Quartet, but you’ll also hear from the Rust College Quartet, the Variety Four, and the Monarch Jazz Quartet. As a special “bonus,” you’ll hear the Oleanders. Do you know who this adorable little boy is? He’s Wilfred Glenn, who would grow up to be the founder of the male close harmony vocal quartet The Revelers. He last had his own birthday segment in 2018 when we played three of his solo recordings. This time we have three more of his solo efforts, none of which has been played on the show before.  There’s not time on the show to go into detail about his life and career, but if you would like to find out more about Wilfred Glenn, I urge you to visit Rivermont Records to check out the CD “A Little Bit of Heaven-Early Barbershop Quartet Recordings 1925-1928” by The Shannon Quartet, a predecessor to The Revelers. Do you know who this lovely lady is? She’s Scottish vocalist Mary Lee who passed away March 13 at age 100.  She sang with the bands of Roy Fox, Ambrose, Jack Payne, Jack Jackson and Harry Roy. She was born August 13, 1921 and will be getting a birthday segment on the August 14 show, which will include a complete biography, but you’ll hear three of her records in the fourth segment of this week’s show. Do you know who this gentleman is? He’s violinist and pianist Paul Specht. He was also a bandleader and you’ll hear three of his recordings in the second segment of this week’s edition of the show. It was common for vintage sheet music to have photographs of orchestra leaders or vocalists associated with the tune on the cover. In this case, the cover refers to a recording of the tune “Slippery Hank” written by Frank Losey. The record is Victor 18321. It was recorded on June 4, 1917 by Earl Fuller’s Famous Jazz Band and that very record will wrap up Frank Losey’s birthday segment on this week’s edition of Rapidly Rotating Records. We’ll also be celebrating Harold Stern’s birthday and in other segments, we’ll really try to succeed in business and see what we can see.  In the final segment, we’re just gonna “wing it!” There’s lots of great music and interesting information so set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and be magically transported back to a different–and we thing better–musical era.

His birth name is Arthur Murray Hainer, but you may know him better as composer, arranger and big band leader Will Hudson.  He starts off this week’s edition of Rapidly Rotating Records with his own birthday segment in which you’ll hear one of his most famous tunes. And his is not the only birthday segment on this week’s show. We’ll also hear tunes from George McConnell and performances by Don Parker.
