This week, we decided to talk about the jobs we’ve had, leading up to what we’re doing now. We’ll combine the “flair” of our life experiences with the “rare,” when talking about a couple instances with discrimination.

Also, Rare Disease Day is coming up at the end of February! Unlike last year where we did a limited merch run to raise money for the Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome Network, we’ll be sharing a link for Rare with Flair fans to donate directly to the Network. As we’ve said before, all HPS Network donations fund research for a cure for pulmonary fibrosis, which is deadly without lung transplant in most variants of the disease. Funds also go towards programming and bringing families together for our annual conference.

We’re so excited to be starting our third season, or third unique calendar year, that we’ve been doing this pod. This episode will start the season off with a bang, as we’re talking about our journey with self-advocacy. Growing up legally blind, self-advocacy is something that’s been impressed on us at every turn. We talk about what we believe are barriers to advocacy and our journeys to be better advocates in not only school and work, but life altogether.

Just like last year, our final episode of the year is a wrap-up! We couldn’t resist the urge to make a Christmas special! If you’ve scrolled through our older episodes, you may see we also did a Christmas special last year and may be wondering, “how is this different?” While last year, we took a more general, “flair” approach to Christmas, this year, we wanted to talk about the disability side of Christmas. We talk about performing in Christmas pageants, shopping for gifts when we can’t drive, and more. To top it off, we talk about our plans for this Christmas.

hi hello hey, we got a spicy one this week!

This episode is one we’ve been both excited to make but also terrified. As partially sighted people, we often feel like we live in a perpetual in-between world. We can see, but we also can’t see. Most people in the general public have a difficult time understanding that blind people have a spectrum of visual acuities. Also, since our functional vision depends on many factors, sometimes it’s easier to see things depending the lighting, contrast, distance, and depth. Given all this, we often feel like we need to behave a certain way with and without mobility aids to fit society’s image of us and avoid too many questions in daily life.

This was fun, vulnerable, and even cathartic for us to make, so we really hope you can try to understand our experience, even if it seems foreign to you. We hope you enjoy!
