Despite the questionable holiday itself (robbing natives of their lands), Thanksgiving is an exciting tradition where we try to celebrate family and the unofficial start of the holiday season. Whether you live in the US or not, we hope you enjoy us talking about our Thanksgiving experiences and hot takes on food.

Also, this episode marks a momentous occasion: our tagline we’ve used for nearly two and a half years will be changing! “Two twenty-somethings with the same rare disease living our best lives,” has served us well, but it won’t be true anymore since our very own Casey turns 30 soon! We’re excited to share what’s next with you all and hope you’ll join us in a couple weeks for a special episode where we reveal the new tagline and other surprises.

Sometimes as we chat with our friends and family, we learn about things sighted people can see that shock us. Having some vision can be a little… confusing. We know that we can’t see everything, but sometimes we forget our limitations, until we find ourselves in a variety of uncomfortable social situations. Whether we think a stranger is waving at us ant they aren’t or we talk to the wrong person, vision (or lack thereof) can come to bite us. If you’re a loyal Rare with Flair listener, you may remember us talking about conferences on our community episode. Since then, we had the opportunity to go to the National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation’s (NOAH) biennial conference and we’re here to recap the highlights.

Not only is this a rare opportunity for us to reunite with each other, but also to be involved in the albinism community at large. We’ve talked about mobility tools on our show before (early on in episode 2, wow!), but it was more of an introduction to the tools we use and why. This episode is more personal, as we explain our feelings surrounding these tools. Sometimes, we feel that people see us differently for using tools, whether it’s an isolating feeling with the cane or too much frustrating attention with the guide dog. Our chat this week is almost a hybrid of episode 2 and episode 31 on “passing” for sighted/blind. We hope you enjoy a peek into our minds as we get a little vulnerable and can begin to understand the strange gray area we live in.
