The 62nd edition of Rathole Radio is upon us. This time I played my usual eclectic mix of music and also performed a rather interesting live song. My impression of Brad Roberts low singing style went astray in parts but should make for an entertaining listen. So settle in and enjoy the music.

Creative Commons label Bad Panda Records have passed 100 releases and they celebrated by making the tracks available in one big download– 9 hours 46mins of music in a 1.1GB file.

43:45 – LIVE TRACK – My rendition of “Superman’s Song” by Brad Roberts. One of their lesser known songs but a classic in my book. Thanks to Craig Edgmon for emailing with this request and reminding me of the tune. I used to sing it many years ago. It’s been a while.

36:46 – Teddy Goldstein & The Goldsteins – New York City – License Unknown – Heard this on AMPed 280 and it was submitted by Peter Clitheroe of Suffolk & Cool. This reminded me of The Eagles in the vocal style and it’s a nice tune. I bought it off CD Baby.

Another Rathole Radio is upon us. My first from the newly relocated studio. I haven’t moved into some expensive purpose built studio, I’ve just moved everything from my bedroom to the spare room. A slightly late Rathole Radio this time. Please accept my apologies for that. I have a cold at the minute and can’t seem to sing or talk as normal. 43:14 – LIVE TUNE – Medicine Man by Dan Lynch – A tune I wrote some years ago and I have a feeling I might have played it live on the show before. I only realised after I’d done it. Well never mind, people seemed to enjoy it anyway. I’m hoping to soon record an album of tunes like this that have gotten away over the years.

Email from Bohdie – His friend from work (Dan Gorman) plays in Vancouver rock band called Aviator Shades. He asked Dan about playing some tracks on the show and got permission. He does say these are old recordings and not quite as good as the new stuff, which I can relate to. But it sounds good to me. Who doesn’t like a big riff?

Time for the mix of great independent music and waffling I like to call Rathole Radio. In episode 55 I played a wide range of styles as usual and I even welcomed back the live acoustic song after a few weeks off. Hope you enjoy the show and don’t forget to send feedback.
00:00 – UltraSyd – Dead But Still Dancing – CC BY-NC-ND Licensed – Don’t know much about this artist but I love the track. Heard it on CCHits. Appears to be 2 guys from the pics on the website. Will try to find out more. The website has a lot of content but no real description of members, location etc.
07:00 – David Gibb & The Pony Club – I’ll Fall – License Unknown – Heard this on Liverpool Acoustic Spotlight and had to play it. David has a lot of information online and his website is good, if 100% Flash. He was nominated for the BBC 2 Folk Awards and together with his band The Pony Club I think he’ll go far. His voice reminds me a bit of James Blunt.
09:55 – The Nancy McKeen Bluz Machine – Third Rail – License Unknown – This track was emailed to me along with a load of others. There is nothing in the world quite like a wailing blues guitar.
15:57 – Brokenkites – Besides – CC BY-NC-ND Licensed – A great bit of chilled out electro from this US artist. This is taken from the album Parameter Relocation released earlier in the year. You’ll probably hear more of this in futures. Check it on on Jamendo.
19:49 – Declan Doherty (AKA Shaky Horse) – When Will You See – All Rights Reserved – Emailed to me by John Whitmore and we had a great discussion about podcasting and promoting CC among the Irish Folk scene. Declan has a great voice with character and I like this track.
27:49 – Jonathan Coulton – Re: Your Brains – CC BY-NC Licensed – What can I say about Jonathan that I haven’t already. A truly great Creative Commons artist. This is one of his most popular songs. Singing Zombies, you got to love it.
32:16 – MC Frontalot – Zero Day – All Rights Reserved – The title track from his Zero Day album, and it’s freely available from Front’s website. Can’t believe I haven’t played it before. Former guest on the show, listen to episode 45 to hear me talking with Front.
40:30 – Diagrams – Antelope – License Unknown – heard on this on AMPed 288 and it comes from Insomnia Radio UK. This is a quirky track and it’s hard to know how to describe. It appealed to me and it’s available free on Soundcloud. I’ll be hosting AMPed next week
44:44 – LIVE TRACK – 20lb Sounds – Late In The Game – CC BY-SA Licensed – An acoustic version of a new track by my band. It sounds a lot more rocking with the band but hopefully it comes across well enough stripped down.
50:42 – Bruce Benson – “The Healing Prayer” – License Unknown – featuring the late Clarence Clemons on saxophone – In lieu of receiving any money for the download, Benson simply requests that each downloader make whatever donation he or she can to Why Hunger. Under the “Type of Donation” section, donors are asked to complete the section to read, “In Honor of Clarence Clemons and The Healing Prayer.”
I mentioned Catalyst Radio, a streaming UK radio station who have asked if they can use Rathole Radio to increase their music output. I agreed of course. I don’t have the full details but episodes of RR will be appearing in their schedule from now on.
61:33 – Heifervescent – Figure 8 – BY-NC-ND Licensed – From the new album Further Adventures In Monkeyland but this Southport artist. I should really contact him and get up there for an interview, it’s only 30mins away from Liverpool. His voice reminds me a little of Ian Brodie in parts.

30:22 – Chamber Music Society Of Lincoln Center – Pachelbel’s Canon In D – License Unknown – Kindly sent to me by Don_S who asked why I don’t play much classical music. As he guessed it’s often the length of the pieces and it’s tough to fit them in. I’m a fan though. (Lincoln Center blurb)
36:46 – Teddy Goldstein & The Goldsteins – New York City – License Unknown – Heard this on AMPed 280 and it was submitted by Peter Clitheroe of Suffolk & Cool. This reminded me of The Eagles in the vocal style and it’s a nice tune. I bought it off CD Baby.

06:43 – Hugo “Droopy” Contini – Sandu – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – A French jazz sandwich made with jazz bread and served with jazz flavoured crisps. Did I mention it’s jazzy? I’ve played this guy before but he sure knows how to play that horn. From Rawbouce Records.
10:38 – Gerador Zero – For X In *.wav; do – CC BY-SA Licensed – Great bit of electro I heard on CCHits Weekly Show. A Brazilian artist according to Jamendo. Very interesting track I thought. Love the dirty beat. Not sure about the programming joke in the title though.
18:01 – Paul & Storm – The Captain’s Wife’s Lament – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – From their 2007 album Gumbo Pants. They supported JC and I have to say this was pretty hilarious live. I didn’t know what to expect from these guys but they were very funny and Jon was crying with laughter for most of the show. You can buy the track on their website.
20:25 – LarG Productions – Reagan – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – A funky bit of hip hop from Jamendo. I like the political angle as well, you won’t be surprised but I’m not fan of Ronald Reagan or the bogus war on drugs. From Vancouver, Canada.
26:18 – Bella Ruse – Push On – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – Another great track I heard on CCHits. The singer’s style reminds me a little of Bjork as the song starts but it changes as it goes on. This is taken from the eponymously titled album on Jamendo. Not much artist info on there though. No link to eternal site, nationality or anything.
30:00 – Indigo78 – They Live – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – British artist from Wolverhampton, formerly the home of Linux podcasts. This is the opening track from The Autumn EP.
39:56 – 20lb Sounds – Makes No Sense (Live At The Cavern Club) – CC BY-SA Licensed – This is taken from a video of our Cavern Club gig last month. A fairly new song you may not have heard before. It’s short but sweet. Enjoy!
