The past 40 years have witnessed great advancements in therapeutic options for treating diabetic retinopathy. Despite a number of effective treatment options, diabetic eye disease is one of the leading causes of vision loss in the United States, in part because many patients are not identified as needing therapy. In addition to counseling patients on the importance glucose control on maintaining vision, clinicians should emphasize the need for regular vision tests among patients with diabetes. Early detection offers the best long-term visual outcomes and is even more important with new treatments approved for the management of diabetic retinopathy. As a value added-resource, a specialized toolkit will also be included as a supplement to the webcast. The toolkit will provide for clinicians clinical practice guidelines and recommendations for screening and diagnosis. In addition, the toolkit will provide helpful information and resources for patients, their families and caregivers.

Of the 61 million women in the U.S. being of childbearing age, it is estimated that 43 million are at risk for unintended pregnancy. In 2002, the US FDA approved the first hysteroscopic sterilization device for female permanent contraception, a microinsert placed into the tubal lumen. Confirmation of placement and tubal occlusion is performed three months following insertion and has, in the past, required an invasive process. In July 2015, the FDA approved transvaginal ultrasound (TVU) as an in-office procedure and alternate confirmation test for permanent contraception microinserts as opposed to hospital-based, and which permits a faster return to routine activity for the patient. Join us as Dr. Hector Chapa and Laura Decker, a Certified Diagnostic Sonographer, discuss the emergent role that TVU plays in the confirmation of appropriate placement of permanent contraceptive microinserts, as well as an in-depth visual explanation of the confirmation process.

Poly-L lactic acid (PLLA/Sculptra®Aesthetic) is the only injectable in its class. It has unique characteristics that need to be clearly understood and integrated into injection techniques before injectors reach optimal results and avoid adverse events. PLLA is approved by the FDA for a single regimen for the correction of shallow to deep nasolabial fold contour deficiencies and other facial wrinkles in which deep dermal grid pattern (cross-hatch) injection techniques is appropriate. However, it is clear from discussions with expert injectors (and peer-reviewed literature) that PLLA is being utilized in a number of areas outside of the approved use. As a result, training is needed throughout the cosmetic injection community to emphasize safe and appropriate injection techniques that will lower adverse effects and improve patient outcomes.
