This inspiring book is befitting for these current times of COVID-19, a celebration of girl power and the strength of the many contributions woman have made as trailblazers. It also highlights the male counterparts for the attributions of paving the way as pioneers. Ms. Priscilla Grinage is a doctoral candidate who currently teaches 4th grade at the Barack H. Obama Elementary Magnet School of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia. She has been educating children for 22 years. She has been applauded for her efforts receiving “ Teacher of the Year” twice , 2004-2005 & 2016-2017 school years. Yet, Ms. Relina Bonilla embraces the diversified beauty in the Spanish language. Today is our 2nd Kid Korner Read Aloud. This episode features guest reader Lihana Brown. Her chosen book is “ One Word From Sophia” by James Averbeck & Yasmeen Ismail. She is a 2nd grader at the Gwynedd Square Elementary School. She’s an avid reader of all kinds of books. When she is not reading , she draws, dances, sings, and so much more. Today’s episode features guest reader Alan Clark. He has chosen to read “ Pete the Cat:Snow Daze” by James Dean. It is his 6 year old son Kristopher’s favorite book. We are excited because Alan provides a male perspective of reading with young boys of color. He suggests starting with enhancing their self esteem, allowing them the chance to open up to receiving knowledge , and then, discarding some of the technology which has become main distractors. He says, children who are over stimulated find it difficult to sit quietly with a book. Today’s episode features Mr. Keith Henderson. He has chosen to read “African American Inventors and Their Inventions” by Dr. Anita C. President. Bonus Q&A segment . Mr. Henderson gives (one) male’s perspective about why reading for African American boys may be challenging. The number one cause is the lack of interest. They lack interest in reading because they don’t see themselves enough and not in a positive light—something everyone needs to pique their interest, which might lead to the JOY of reading.
