Debra Feldman helps the world’s top executives in making fantastic career moves. Interestingly, she started her own career as a Nurse!
Just as healthcare practitioners diagnose the cause of symptoms, Debra says she identifies the source of clients’ inability to attract the attention of hiring decision makers.
So how did Debra Feldman, a petite but dynamite woman go from nursing to a career in C Level Healthcare Management, including a stint at the prestigious New York Presbyterian Hospital, to helping over 1000 senior level executives to figure out what they want next and how to get there?
In this fascinating conversation, Debra shares her own career story as well as her favorite strategies that will help you to make successful shifts in your own career.
- Debra also shares the real reason she started her firm Job Whiz 20 years ago, something many of us can relate with in 2021 in midst of the ‘great resignation.’
- Using old school sleuthing techniques, Debra explains how she researched companies and people in the pre-internet era: something that will benefit you when you want to connect with people who are not active on social media
Debra is a very sought-after career advisor by senior executives in major companies, hence it’s a privilege to have her open up and share some valuable career advice on this podcast. Make sure you don’t miss it!

“On the day I retired from the Marine Corps I had spent exactly half of my life in it. And while I loved it and gave corporate life a shot afterwards, I realized that I had too much to say, too much to share, and many ways to serve.”
So, how did my guest today: Rich Cardona, go from the US Marine Corps to working at Amazon to starting his own media agency and having his own top rated podcast ? Rich spills the beans, the tea, everything, and this is a perfect conversation for you especially if you’re facing major life decisions.
In this revealing conversation, Rich shares:
- How he got hired by the US Marine Corps where he served as Infantryman, attack helicopter pilot, Director of the Marine Aircraft Group, and what are some skills he still practices today.
- What made him retire early from the Marines and do an MBA and whether it was worth the investment
- What made him stand out and get hired at Amazon at the Robotics Storage division (he used a method he learnt while at the US Marine Corps which you will probably love!)
- What made him realize on his very first day at Amazon that he was at the wrong place
- How he met Gary Vaynerchuk, one of the world’s best known internet personalities, and the massive life shifting impact that mentorship made on his career
- How Rich got hired by his very first paying client
- As someone who’s seen his fair share of career transitions, Rich shares his favourite career transition tip for you, which will serve you whether you’re moving from the military to corporate, or undergoing any other big change.

“Being an artist is not a real job. You’ve got to make a living and put food on the table. Pursuing your passion is a nice to have, but not many get to do that.”
I’m sure you heard something similar from your own parents, while growing up.
This is what David was told by his immigrant father when he expressed his love for drawing as a career option.
There were several unforgettable moments in my conversation with David Fano, formerly Chief Product and Growth Officer at WeWork and now Founder of Teal HQ, a startup made to help job seekers.
“I loved building, but didn’t necessarily love buildings.”
- After he completed his Architecture studies and began working.
“I’m a better starter than finisher.”
- When we talked about his deeper decision to leave WeWork.
What I love is that David is following his north star, which tells him you NEED to be happy at work, no matter what anyone tells you. His mission is now helping job seekers and professionals with tools and frameworks to do just that.
We also talked about David’s best tips for:
- someone who has an idea for a company and wants to start taking it seriously.
- a job seeker to stay on their game when things are not going their way
-how to know it’s time to quit a job
And much, much more!

This 50th episode of How I Got Hired is a very special one.
Have you ever felt that you have faced too much adversity? Here’s a story that will open your mind.
On March 25th 2002, Sana Khurshid was travelling with her sister on a highway in Islamabad, when they suddenly met with a deadly road accident. Her sister died on the spot while Sana's body was 95% paralysed.
In the hospital, Sana was unable to talk or move any of her body parts. Her only way of communication was blinking her eyes. To get the attention of sleeping nurses, she would often bite on her ventilator tube to stop the oxygen supply and set off the alarm. After years of medical treatment, she was able to talk but physically became wheelchair-bound for the rest of her life.
The iron-girl however, didn't lose heart. Sana went on to complete her studies in London, and successfully completed her LLB and then LLM. She is now a practicing lawyer in Lahore and actively works for the differently abled and is committed to make public places accessible for them everywhere.
Talk about turning adversity into advocacy. Literally.
I am in awe of Sana and what she has achieved. She has many words of wisdom for you, so please join us in this inspirational conversation:
Sana shares the raw, unfiltered emotions of going through a trauma and what kept her pushing through, day after day.
We also talk about the law, and what made her pursue it, and how she managed tasks like homework, being paralysed from the chest down.
We also talk about Inclusion and what it means to be an advocate for the differently abled in Pakistan, both the daily struggles and wins.
If you think you can’t do something because you face too many obstacles, this episode will make you think again.

When I watched ‘The Girl with the Broken Neck’ talk on Youtube, I knew I had to have the Speaker on this podcast.
Was it because of the fact that she was born a little different from everyone else and has seen success beyond most people’s imaginations, in spite of, or rather, because of how unique she is?
Or was it that she got accepted into Wharton and graduated with the highest honours?
Or that she went through 7 heartbreaking rejections from the top consulting firms and considered jumping off a building, but didn’t?
Or was it that she left a cushy job on Wall Street to come back to India to start a financial services business, during a recession, in spite of everyone advising her that it was a terrible idea?
Or was it that under her leadership as MD and CEO, Edelweiss Asset Management has grown to $9 billion in managed assets?
There’s so much to learn from Radhika Gupta and in this conversation, she shares with us the following:
-Her experience growing up as the daughter of an Indian diplomat and living in India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Italy and the US and her top advice for someone who’s never lived or worked outside their city or country
-Going through rejection after rejection after college, and finally getting an offer from McKinsey in Boston, where she met the senior partner who had a reputation of being a tough cookie. Radhika shares her mindset on how to prepare for something when one has been through recent adversity and even suicidal thoughts.
-As a shy person not fond of public speaking, what it is that made her agree to do the famous talk ‘The Girl with the Broken Neck?
- Upon returning to India, Radhika thought “clients would bend over backwards to give me their money. I was wrong. The reality of running a business with no revenue, taking home no salary led to lots of self-doubt.” Radhika shares the juicy story of how she got hired by her very first paying client.
-Her formula of hiring ‘misfits’ and why it works

Our guest today is at the heart of this operation. Andrew Seaman is Senior Editor at LinkedIn News, for job search and careers. Today is all about Andrew Seaman the professional and going deeper behind his journalism career at USA Today, Thompson Reuters and of course, LinkedIn.
In this episode, we chat about the following:
- What made him choose journalism and one precious lesson hidden in his message for today’s children
- The detailed strategies that Andrew took to secure nine, yes nine Internships and how they helped his early career
- What it was actually like being a White House correspondent – a job that any journalist would give an arm and leg for
- Picking his field in journalism, and the detailed story behind why and how Andrew switched from political journalism to medical journalism
- Applying to LinkedIn for the News Editor position, and the detailed steps Andrew took to stand out
- And ensure you listen till the end, for his best piece of career advice, which might appear counter-intuituve

Incidentally, my guest today is also based in France. Nida Januskis is the Associate Dean of Advancement at INSEAD, the world’s #1 business school as per the Financial Times 2021 MBA ratings. What about Harvard Business School? Well. Nida has worked there as well!

Her versatile career has seen her change her industry, geography and even function. And in this podcast, she shares with you how she did it.
In this fascinating conversation, Nida talks about how:

How did someone who studied Shakespeare Romance and Tragedy get hired at Barclays Bank and Adobe?!
In 2021, Barclays was rated by a Linkedin Study as the #1 best employer in the UK and Adobe has consistently figured in the Fortune magazine list of best workplaces. My guest today, Dan Reed, has worked in both these sought-after companies. So I know advice will be useful to many of you.
Yet what drew me to a conversation with Dan was something else.
He is part of a growing tribe of Dads who talk about being a Dad, who want a rewarding and successful career, but not at the expense of family. And second, Dan recently started at Adobe in Digital Strategy, after 7 years at Barclays bank, and there’s an insightful story on how he got hired at Adobe, which holds lessons for many jobseekers today.
In this episode we talk about:
- The exact steps Dan took to secure a job and grow at Barclays, coming from a non-traditional background
- Wearing full arm tattoos at the workplace, and how and why he got inked as a teenager, considering his fear of needles!
- The very personal reason Dan started his blog and podcast “The Career Dad”, how it’s resonated with men around the world and how it’s promoting gender equality
- The ‘networking’ strategy Dan used to get noticed and hired at Adobe. Hint: it was not overnight but this strategy paid off, big time. It can for you too.

My very first guest on this podcast shared how he changed his name (as an experiment) in order to get better responses to his CV. Sounds extreme, but bias is something many jobseekers say they are concerned about, whether it is ageism, sexism, classism or racism.
So how do you deal with biases and discrimination in the recruitment process?
I had a conversation on exactly this topic with Virginia Franco, a leading resume writer based in North Carolina, which is being replayed in this Sonologue.
I also believe there are two types of people, when it comes to careers: Complainers and Obtainers
Complainers blame their problems on everyone or everything else, yet take no action to fix their situation. Obtainers accept their challenges, embrace them, act on them and overcome them.
This holds also for how you deal with Bias. You can complain about it, or you can act to minimize it by focusing on what is in your span of control.
I read this quote in December 2019, and I think about it nearly every single day:
The best years of your life are the ones in which you decide your problems are your OWN.
You do not blame them on your mother, the economy or the president.
You realise that you control your OWN destiny. ~Albert Ellis
So do give a listen to this short snippet and I hope it’s useful in tuning up your own approach.
