  • 64. Ruchira Chaudhary: Learn the Secrets to Uncommon Leadership

    Send us Fan Mail

“It was 2013 and I was exiting a large and well-known organization and just the previous year, I'd graduated with a mid-career MBA from Chicago Booth School of Business. Armed with new found knowledge and skills, I felt I could change the world or at least, the corporate world. So I made some good moves, including taking up high profile corporate roles that had their rewards. However working with a certain large corporation also gave me clarity on the kind of organization I never wanted to work for again and it made me think about leaders who move forward by stepping on others and holding them back.”

Ruchira Chaudhary is someone with deep expertise in strategy execution, leadership development and executive coaching, in Asia, Middle East and Northern Africa in some of the best companies in these regions: AIG, TCS, Medtronic etc.

This intro is from her book ‘Coaching: The Secret Code to Uncommon Leadership’ and today we are going to talk to Ruchira about her own rich and varied career.
In this episode, Ruchira shares her stories and experiences layered in culture and leadership that led her to research and reflect on how to become the most extraordinary leader you can become.

  • 63. Sonalogues: How I moved from India to South America to Europe (and everything in between!)

    Send us Fan Mail

How did I get hired for a plum consulting role in Chile and all the HR roles here in Europe?
In this podcast episode, I reveal it all.

I don't know anyone who isn't insecure and suffering from low self-confidence at one point or another.  I've had more than my share. I talk a lot about how COMPETENCE builds CONFIDENCE. Put the reps in, repeat. It will get better. And it does.

    What does that mean??

Here's my own story, where I have shared my rocky journey on building confidence and self-belief with my fab friend Jules White from back in July 2021:

    𝐌𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠:

⬆Knowing that HR as a function was right for me, at 18 years of age.
⬆ Living on the other side of the world at 26 years old, in Uruguay and Chile
⬆ Learning Spanish to open up new conversations and opportunities
⬆ Teaching English to the local professionals

𝐍𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠:

⬇ Living in Europe with a new born baby to start the MBA at 29
⬇ Constant comparison with others, "I'm not -- enough"
⬇ Being laid off multiple times
⬇ Leaving a job with nothing to go to at 39
⬇ Starting my own business at 40
⬇ My YouTube journey in 2018

Fast forward to 2021. Confidence is my Superpower!

Remember this: Confidence is learnt AND IS A JOURNEY.
Most people only share the ⬆ moments and you think they were born confident and have never suffered from self-doubt.

    As the quote goes:
'𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 "𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐦𝐞". 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐬 "𝐈 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐧'𝐭."

    -----------------------------------------------
Hope this conversation helps you on your own journey to self-confidence.

  • 62: Daniel Roth: Career Advice from the Editor's desk

    Send us Fan Mail

He is the Editor in Chief at LinkedIn News, based out of LinkedIn’s NYC offices in the Empire State Building. He has previously worked as writer and editor at Fortune, Wired, Forbes and Conde Nast (home of publications like Vogue, The New Yorker, GQ, Vanity Fair).

So, how did Daniel Roth go from growing up in Kentucky to living and working in the Big Apple and traveling the world? Let’s learn from his journalism career, I’m sure there are a tonne of lessons for all of us.

This is a conversation replete with career lessons we can all learn. Dan shares the following:

     - What influenced him very early in his life to pursue journalism as a career

    - How Dan got hired for his first job by an Indian editor in North Carolina over 25 years ago and the Hindi phrase he still remembers till today

     - How he got hired for competitive roles at Forbes, and other top publications and what helped him to stand out.

     - The detailed backstory of how a meeting with Jeff Weiner resulted in getting hired for a newly created role of Executive Editor at LinkedIn in 2011. There are at least 5 lessons from this experience alone, with lots of unexpected twists and turns!

    - Dan interviews a lot of famous people on LinkedIn News like Bobbi Brown, Robert Downey Jr, Bill Gates, Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani, Richard Banson, Gwenneth Paltrow etc. Dan shares research and prep process, because there are definitely some commonalities with preparing for a major job interview.

     - As Editor in Chief, Dan’s message to the listener who’s shied away from expressing their voice on Linkedin so far

This is easily one of my top 5 favourite conversations of all time.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

    Send us Fan Mail

“It was May 2019. I made the biggest decision of my life. I left my super comfortable job at Reebok, packed my life in 4 suitcases and moved across the globe to study more.
     But NOTHING went as planned.
Little did I know that I'll be graduating in the middle of a pandemic.
Little did I know that it would be the worst moment to be out in the job market again.
And little did I know that I won't be seeing my family for over 2 years.
The world has changed completely since then.
But sometimes, when nothing goes per plan, we're pushed to find solutions outside our comfort zone. And more often than not, they are way better than our original plan.”

In this week’s podcast episode of How I Got Hired, I speak with Pragya Mishra on how she landed the plum role of Head of Marketing at Shield, the LinkedIn Analytics platform, without any real experience in SAAS Marketing or even Tech for that matter.

In this juicy episode we talk about:

    - What made Pragya make big, bold, uncertain moves when life was downright comfortable in every single way

    - How she moved to Denmark with a job offer that (at first) didn’t offer any salary!

    - How she got hired by Shield, the world’s leading app for LinkedIn analytics

    And so much more!

I love Pragya’s career story, I hope you enjoying listening to the entire conversation!

  • 60: Busting the most common resume myths, once and for all!

    Send us Fan Mail

One set of professionals who are bashed up regularly on LinkedIn are career coaches, for giving bad advice to job seekers.

I'll be the first to say, what's good or bad lies in the eyes of the beholder, right?

Having said that, I don't want to pass judgment because I'm acutely aware that like a few other coaches, I help job seekers around the world, and what's one coach's opinion in Minneapolis may be quite different to another in Milan and another in Mumbai. Advice that is directive and absolute like 'You should' and 'This is wrong' comes from a very narrow way of thinking.

I will be exploring 8 myths out there on resume writing, and share my take on them, based on my own experience of going through over 250,000 resumes during my career, hiring across 3 continents.
Make sure you sign up to the FREE LIVE masterclass, because we will be sharing best practices on how to write that winning resume that get you calls for interviews. We will be LIVE on 1st Dec and I'd love to see my podcast listeners! Did I mention it’s FREE?!

  • 59. Alex B Sheridan: Create lasting Impact

    Send us Fan Mail

If you are not following Alex Sheridan on LinkedIn, you are seriously missing out. Like seriously. We’ve all heard the term edutainment: combining education and entertainment, but Alex takes it to a whole new level, with a hard-hitting message you don’t want to hear, but need to hear, all the while laughing out loud amidst some stomach cramps…because Alex is funny. And very intelligent.

Alex helps both entrepreneurs and organizations generate consistent revenue and build their brand on LinkedIn through proven and field-tested content marketing & social selling strategies.

In today’s episode, we talk about how Alex went from working in a Sales role in a staffing company, to starting his own, highly successful company in the middle of a global pandemic.

Alex leaves nothing out. We talk about:

    - What made him stand out and get hired at one of the top staffing firms in the US, first as a recruiter and then as a salesman

    - What made him leave a cushy position with a 6 figure salary and start his business called Impaxs Marketing, all at the height of the pandemic

    - How he pivoted his business while selling A,  when people started asking for B

    - The role and impact that a deeply personal challenge (divorce) played in starting his business

    - Why not creating content on LinkedIn is a big mistake and how to get started

    - What to post and how to post: whether you are a job seeker, business owner or employee, so that you attract the attention from the right people

    - How he found his own distinct style of combining humour, entertainment and education and how you can find your own

There are so many lessons you can apply to your own career, I hope you enjoy the listen as much as I did!

  • 58. Richard Robinson: From 94 rejections to dream job

    Send us Fan Mail

Imagine joining a company and within days, you are flung into an unexpected crisis situation.

Our guest Richard Robinson definitely knows a thing or two about this. As a new employee at McDonalds he was part of a team that faced down one of the largest reputation crises that business had ever faced.

With over 28 years of Sales and Marketing Experience in companies like Coca-Cola, McDonalds,  and Publicis Worldwide and working on international campaigns like Olympic Games Pledge in 2012, there is so much to learn from Richard’s career.

In this enlightening and frankly very entertaining conversation, Richard shares how:

     - An awkward rejection at an interview with a top employer turned into the best career advice that helped him to eventually get hired at his first job, after 94 rejections

     - What helped him to stand out and get hired at senior international marketing roles with Coca-Cola and McDonalds

     - How as a new employee at McDonalds, Richard dealt with the crisis following the release of documentary ‘Supersize Me’ In 2006 and the most compelling lessons from the experience

     - How he selects the best individuals for the most visible and high stakes campaigns and how his most effective hiring criteria are inspired from plumbling (yes, plumbing – radiators, pipes, drains!)

     - His favourite career advice and the question that he asks himself at the end of every year, which just happens to be perfect timing – as we see off 2021 shortly!

This is an unmissable conversation, whether you want to learn about the fast-paced environment of consumer businesses or just learn from someone who had navigated the peaks and valleys in a  remarkable career.
