  • Are You A Perfectionist? - Signs You Might Be Suffering from Perfectionism

Hello Everyone & Welcome to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Today on the show I am talking about: Are You A Perfectionist?

Do you struggle with perfectionism or have someone in your life that may be struggling?

Today we are going to go over some origins of perfectionism & a shortlist of signs that you may be struggling with it. This can be helpful when wanting to understand some of your actions & decisions more.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that I am a perfectionist. It’s a problem I have been working on in the last couple years, but it’s definitely something that started in childhood.
    • I always felt like the expectation for me to be perfect existed growing up with my dad. I was the little trophy princess daughter that needed to be there as a shining example of his ability to be a single father. And a lot of times it was all too much.
    • So I became a perfectionist because people told me I was awesome when I appeared perfect & liked me more that way. And it was really tough, as I believe it is for a ton of other people that suffer from perfectionism. And some of the other reasons people fall into perfectionism is due to fear of disapproval from others & feelings of inadequacy & insecurities.
    • It all boils down to this feeling of conditional acceptance. You feel like if you are perfect for others, you will be accepted.
    • So today I wanted to share some signs that you might be a perfectionist, in case you are struggling to understand if you are or how to help someone else that may be struggling & not know it.
    • 1. Small mistakes feel like huge failures.
    • 2. Constructive criticism feels hurtful, not helpful.
    • 3. You see flaws in everything you do.
    • 4. You avoid activities when you know you won’t be the best.
    • 5. You can’t enjoy the journey because you’re focused on the outcome.
    • 6. You obsess over mistakes.
    • 7. You’re weighed down by fear of not being good enough.

  • Toxic Positivity

Hello Everyone & Welcome to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Today on the show I am talking about: Toxic Positivity

Positivity is something I am such a strong supporter of, but it has occurred to me that sometimes positivity can come off negatively & condecendingly.

So today we are going to discuss both sides of positivity & what we can do to not let it have a toxic tone, but to be more compassionate.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • I’m all about positivity. And I don’t think there are very many people that know me that would say anything different because I’m not shy about it. Positivity is something I stand very firm on & try to encourage others to share the same view. But not everyone is affected the same by positivity because it doesn’t come across as positive or helpful when it is presented in certain ways or even by certain people.
    • Something I didn’t really know about until recently was the push back on positivity because of the idea of toxic positivity.
    • Toxic positivity is the idea that no matter what you are going through, super difficult & terrible, you have to remain positive & only have what someone would call ‘good vibes.’
    • Now, I am such a big supporter of positivity because I believe it can actually help you in your life. I believe taking the perspective of a positive attitude when you are dealing with difficult things can be helpful to not fall into a deep, dark pit of despair. Positivity can be the perspective change that you need in the really tough moments.
    • But that doesn’t mean you need to dismiss what you’re going through. This doesn’t mean you will diminish what you’re dealing with, but just keep you level-headed & hopefully putting a bulk of your focus on gratitude because it will keep you in the moment & not into a whirlwind of twisted & confused feelings that won’t really help you cope.
    • So today I want to talk about the differences between toxic positivity responses & compassionate responses:
    • 1. Everything happens for a reason vs. I hear you.
    • 2. Look on the bright side vs. I’m here for you.
    • 3. It could always be worse vs. Tell me more about it.
    • 4. Stop being so negative vs. It’s normal to feel negative in this situation.
    • 5. You’ll get over it vs. It’s hard but I believe in you.
    • 6. Never give up vs. It’s ok to give up sometimes. Would the outcome be different if you didn’t?
    • 7. You should look for the good vs. It’s probably hard to see any good in this right now. How can we make sense of this right now?

  • These Things Don't Define You

Hello Everyone & Welcome to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Today on the show I am talking about: These Things Don't Define You

It's so easy to hold onto any negative experiences or feelings & believe those things define you because it was so traumatic or life-changing that you believe it's all you are.

But those things, like your family or past mistakes, don't define who you are or what you're all about. Only you can decide what defines you.

Today I am chatting about some common beliefs that people get caught up in believing define them.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • A lot of times we will take on the burden of what has happened in our past & put that on us as who we are & our future. We will believe that the things we had to go through, the people & their influence in our lives & our mistakes are what make us into the person we are. We believe that all this crap is who we are because we just absorb it without considering anything else that makes up who we are.
    • Today I wanted to talk through a few different, common beliefs that people get confused with, because it’s important to know these things don’t define you as a person.
    • Let’s start with your parents & family, in  general. Your family does not define who you are or what you’re all about, even though you grew up with them & are a product of your parents. This is true because despite being raised by these people & around them on the regular, you are not a carbon copy of them.
    • You have different interests & passions. You may not agree with how they view the world & sometimes values & beliefs can be different, just based on how you see the world or because you are growing up in a different time of the world & generation.
    • But don’t feel the burden that you have to take on your parents or family’s mistakes, ideals or attitudes.
    • Another thing that doesn’t define you are your mistakes. Mistakes don’t define who you are, what you’re capable of or even how smart you are. Mistakes are wonderful opportunities to learn, grow & change for the better. And sometimes it feels like these mistakes will follow us around, but that’s we are allowing those past mistakes to have power over us. We need to let go & move forward.
    • The next one I want to mention is a big one! What other people think about you doesn’t define you. It’s just their opinion, not facts. And even if it seems like their opinion is an informed, it still doesn’t define you because it’s not facts. It’s not something you have to believe or let hold power over you.
    • The last one I want to mention is trauma. Whatever trauma you went through does not define you. Absolutely not. Not even close. Trauma may affect you in ways that will take some time to overcome & work through, but it still doesn’t define you. And one of the best ways to work through whatever trauma you are suffering from is to tell yourself & believe that it doesn’t define who you are & who you will be in the future.

  • Overcoming Resentment - How to Move Forward

Hello Everyone & Welcome to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Today on the show I am talking about: Overcoming Resentment

Are you holding onto anger & frustrations like it's your best friend?

I also have struggled with resentment, but it is something that can be overcome if you make the decision to do so.

Today I am chatting about how to overcome resentment & also avoid getting caught up in it in the future.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • I am like the queen of resentment. I feel like I always have been because I have always been obsessed with justice & wanting everything to be fair & others being fair & doing the right thing. And if someone wasn’t being fair to me or to someone I know, I would pour on the resentment. I would find the grudge to hold & I would be upset.
    • And for me, resentment is caused by the underlying pain of being mistreated & wronged by others so much as a child & dragging that pain & unhealed emotions into my adulthood.
    • And despite how hurt I feel & what others have done to me in the past, this is still no excuse for me to hold resentment. Because experiencing frustration & disappointment towards someone is a normal feeling, but holding resentment isn’t going to accomplish anything. It only makes you feel better in the moment, but worse later. And if it’s not addressed, it can really take over your mind, like a cancer, & really ruin relationships.
    • I want to make sure I make the point that it’s fine to be angry about something or towards someone, but it turns into resentment when you hold onto that anger & continue to let it burn, as opposed to confronting it & overcoming it.
    • So, I want to dive into some specific behaviors that cause resentment:
    • 1. Not speaking up when a boundary is crossed.
    • 2. Saying ‘yes’ when you actually mean ‘no.’
    • 3. Not speaking up & tolerating offensive comments.
    • 4. Putting up with intrusive questions.
    • Now, I know it can be tough to actually confront someone when you are feeling anger or feel like you are being wronged, but it’s a much healthier option than keeping that anger inside & stewing on it. The worst-case scenario of this is beginning to harbor a desire for revenge, which is a whole new level.
    • So, let’s chat about how we can release the resentment & move on from those emotions (equals freedom):
    • 1. Acknowledge your resentment.
    • 2. Sticking to your boundaries.
    • 3. Practice expressing anger & frustration differently.
    • 4. Release what you don’t have control over.
    • 5. Practice gratitude.

  • What Should Self Love Look Like for You?

Hello Everyone & Welcome to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Today on the show I am talking about: What Does Self Love Look Like?

How often are you making time for self-love?

I'm pretty bad about making time to do it, but I know it's super important to our mental health to put ourselves first & actually take care of ourselves.

Today I am chatting about what self-love looks like, which should give us some ideas on how to add it into our lives.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • Self love is underrated. A lot of us pass up providing ourselves self love because we make so many other things in our lives more important. We think that there will always be time for loving ourselves after we do all these other things. But the thing that I have realized over time is if you put it off for too long, you will have a lot to make up for than you would if you practiced self love on the regular.
    • And just so we are all on the same page, self love is the appreciation of yourself, with this appreciation growing the more we support our physical, psychological & spiritual needs. It’s having a high regard for your own well-being & happiness & taking care of your own needs & not sacrificing your well-being to please others. And this appreciation can mean something different for everyone & can happen in many different ways, depending on the person.
    • And taking the time to figure out what self love looks like for you is pretty important to your mental health. Self-love can motivate us to make healthier choices & cause us to nurture ourselves better the more we do it.
    • So let’s chat about what self love can look like with a few examples:
    • 1. Being unapologetic about what heals you & makes you better & stronger.
    • 2. Trusting your own process, even with people who don’t agree.
    • 3. Changing your mind if something doesn’t feel right or doesn’t work out the way you imagined.
    • 4. Taking as much time as you need to heal & understand what you’re going through or have gone through.
    • 5. Spending less time in toxic environments.
    • 6. Saying no when you don’t want to do something or be involved.
    • 7. Taking a break from self-judgement.

  • Is Therapy the Right Choice for You?

Hello Everyone & Welcome to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Today on the show I am talking about: Why You Should Go to Therapy

Do you currently go to therapy or have you ever considered going but just haven't yet?

I am one of the biggest advocates of therapy & have no shame in sharing that with anyone, which is why I want to share with you today some of the reasons I believe we should all go to therapy & how you'll benefit from it.

Hopefully, this will give you some clarity if you are trying to decide whether or not you want to give therapy a try for the first time or again.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • I go to therapy every single week. And I have been going to therapy on and off for years because I knew it was something I needed. I wish I had had the opportunity to have counseling while I was growing up, but I knew with everything going on, that never would have been an option. That would have allowed secrets to get out.
    • But even still, I was happy the option to have someone to talk through my thoughts & experiences with came about in college. And I didn’t have to pay for it because it was an on-campus offering. Which I know is one of the biggest things that prevents people from seeking out counseling, it’s just so expensive.
    • My goal someday in the future is to create a fund for people to have access to mental health care without having to worry about the cost. There are so many providers that do have sliding scales, so you can pay a reduced rate, but even that can still be expensive, especially if you need support more than once a week or once every two weeks. It can really add up & as important as therapy is, it can still take a back seat to so many other things you have to spend money on to just live.
    • But it’s important & I believe we all know that, even if you’re pushing back on actually following through with therapy. Because therapy can be really scary. The idea of diving back into old trauma, reliving past events, having to break down limiting mindsets, confront some negative behaviors, it’s a lot. But having the courage & facing those types of fears is what is going to help you overcome what is holding you back in life.
    • When behaviors & mindsets negatively affect your day-to-day life, it’s time to seek help to figure out what’s going on & what you can do to grow & change.
    • And today I want to talk to you about why you should go to therapy:
    • 1. To speak with someone without fear of judgment
    • 2. To learn more about who you are & why you do what you do
    • 3. To process past experiences & events in your life
    • 4. To grow & change as a person (better coping mechanisms)
    • 5. To address what could be affecting current & future relationships.

  • What Does A Healthy Support System Look Like?

Hello Everyone & Welcome to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Today on the show I am talking about: What a Healthy Support System Looks Like

Do you have a few people in your life that offer support & care when you need it?
If you do, that's great! Listen in as I chat about what Support System categories those people in your life would fit into & evaluate if your support needs are fulfilled all around.
If not, let me share with you what to look for in the people you might have supporting you in the future!

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • Growing up, I didn’t really have a support system. Not even my parents or other family members or friends were really there to help me through things. It was because I didn’t ask.
    • But I felt like I couldn’t ask. Because I was hiding so much pain, abuse & embarrassment & shame for everything that was happening to me & around me. And when you don’t ask for something, you typically don’t get it.
    • And even in hindsight, I don’t think I would have asked for help or support if I had known better or understood how much better my mental health would have been if I at least had support from someone to share my situation with. Because I knew nothing really could have been done to physically help the problems I was dealing with.
    • But still, having a support system is gold. It’s someone or many people to lean on & get help from when you need it. This could be emotional or practical advice and/or support.
    • And you may already have this & not even realize it. If you have a great group of friends, some like-minded colleagues and close family members, you have what is considered a core group of people that make up a really great support system in your life.
    • With a group made up of people within these 3 groups, you should be covered in receiving support within any of the 4 types of social support that are known when thinking about support: Emotional, Instrumental, Informational & Appraisal.
    • Let’s quickly look at what each of these social support categories means for support:
    • Emotional: This deals in empathy, love, trust & caring support.
    • Instrumental: This is actual, physical aid & help
    • Informational: This would be providing advice, information & suggestions to you.
    • Appraisal: This is geared toward self-evaluation support.
    • As humans, we need people to thrive & survive. Even if we are the most introverted of people, we need at least a few others in our lives that will be there as a positive influence on us, which can also help with overall higher levels of wellbeing & better coping skills.
    • So let’s chat about what the ideal, healthy support system would look like:
    • 1. Needs to be loving & accepting.
    • 2. Pushes you to see from a different perspective & calls you out when you need it.
    • 3. Will actively listen & be a sounding board.
    • 4. Offers encouragement & celebrates your wins with you.
    • 5. Available for advice when you ask for it.

  • Stay Focused with To Do Lists - Practical Self Care Tips

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Practical Self Care Tips

This week I want to talk to share with you some super practical self-care tips.

Sometimes it's just best to get back to some basic tips to improve your life. We can talk about the nitty-gritty & in-depth topics all day long, but sometimes looking at things from a high level can make it a little easier to implement into your life.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • Oh man, I have such a love affair with todo lists. I love creating the lists on regular paper, on notepads made for todo lists, on my phone, on my computer, just everywhere I can. Todo lists are more often than not my best friend.
    • It’s honestly the feeling of actually checking something off the list that makes me feel so good & accomplished. I feel good because I actually got something done & there is like a little prize of crossing it off or checking the box on the list. Even better, when the list is completely checked off, it’s the highest point of feeling accomplished. It also provides some extra motivation to keep going with your tasks because you feel like you’re on a roll.
    • The function of todo lists can help with lowering stress & making you feel more relaxed about what you need to get done because you planned it all out. You’re not flying by the seat of your pants, which can be fun, but not when you have a ton to get done.
    • There’s also the added benefit of being able to prioritize your day with having your list written out or arranged in your phone.
    • Now I do want to mention that there is some backlash against todo lists, no shock here. Creating lists that are too long can be really overwhelming for people & cause the opposite of what I was speaking about and not actually get anything done. But I think the way to combat this is to create shorter lists so that you won’t get too overwhelmed with what needs to be done.
    • There is also concern with having feelings of failure because you will create a list of things you want to get done and if you aren’t able to get everything done on the list in your predetermined time, it feels like you failed. But the way I would combat this is to again, create a shorter list & understand your real time constraints, but also provide yourself some flexibility to get things done in an actual reasonable amount of time.
    • So let’s chat about awesome benefits of using todo lists in your life:
    • 1. You can easily share what needs to be done if it’s in list format.
    • 2. Todo lists can be full of fun things, too.
    • 3. Accountability is baked right in.

  • Take Time to Be Alone & Decompress - Practical Self Care Tips

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Practical Self Care Tips

This week I want to talk to share with you some super practical self-care tips.

Sometimes it's just best to get back to some basic tips to improve your life. We can talk about the nitty-gritty & in-depth topics all day long, but sometimes looking at things from a high level can make it a little easier to implement into your life.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • I love spending time alone. I love spending time reading alone, taking a bubble bath in a house alone, watching television alone. I like being alone.
    • I also like spending time with people, too, but I am more of an introvert, so I need that downtime to reset & be ready for more people time.
    • And it’s funny because I never really understood this about myself until I was a full on adult, like after college. When I was younger I would make a point to spend a ton of time with other people, but that wasn’t because I necessarily loved being with people all time or needed that type of environment, but to keep myself safe from my living situation.
    • And there were times as a child that I enjoyed being alone, but it wasn’t as enjoyable as it was when I left for college or now as a full grown adult. Now I just soak in silence & the opportunities I have to just chill & not do anything.
    • And a big part of this, like many others, is because I already do so much on the regular. I’m sure you’re the same. We all get super busy, caught up in demanding schedules or responsibilities that prevent us from giving ourselves the proper amount of personal care.
    • But we need the recharge time. We need to reset. We need to refresh so we can keep hitting life hard.
    • And we also get to know ourselves better the more time we spend alone. You can spend time realigning with who you are & what you stand for, what you’re all about.
    • So, today instead of giving you tips on how to spend time alone, I am going to instead give you more concrete reasons why you should make time to be alone on the regular:
    • 1. Time to discover who you are & what you want. (be more comfortable in your own skin, think about what you want in comparison to what others think or could be influencing you to do.)
    • 2. Less distractions equals more productivity & less negativity.
    • 3. Boosts creativity & new interests.

    • I don’t have a good morning routine. I aspire to have one, some day when I can get my life together, but for now, I have a semi-functional morning routine. And that’s good for me right now.
    • I don’t think I have ever had a very strict morning routine in my entire life. There are always things I have to do every single morning to actually prepare for the day or make me feel awake & ready to get whatever done, but I have this ultimate desire to include other things I could totally romanticize & wax poetically about to you.
    • Things like journaling, meditation or reading would be a nice addition to my morning, but I never create enough time for that. And I don’t anticipate working that in anytime soon, but maybe someday after I retire from my full-time job.
    • The things I do give my time to in the morning is a quick wash of the face, letting the dog out & my workout during the work week. That is my current routine that doesn’t change much at all because I don’t think it could get any easier, plus it accomplishes the things most important to me, taking care of my dog & taking care of my health.
    • Which I believe is what is most important. The point of a morning routine is to set the tone for the day & have a better handle over how your day will go, rather than letting your schedule drive the day.
    • If you are able to start your day ready to take on whatever comes at you & prioritize the rest, you’re good to go. Productivity is more likely with a set routine & a mindset the ha been prepped for the day.
    • So let’s chat about how we can craft the best morning routine for us:
    • 1. Plan your day the night before or right when you get up.
    • 2. Find a quick daily mindfulness activity you can do in the morning. (devotional, gratitude list or journaling)
    • 3. Try to get in some daylight & movement.
    • 4. Drink some water. (improves circulation, alertness & assists in digestion)

Please share this podcast with anyone that may need this encouragement!
