  • Try A New Hobby - Practical Self Care Tips

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Practical Self Care Tips

This week I want to talk to share with you some super practical self-care tips.

Sometimes it's just best to get back to some basic tips to improve your life. We can talk about the nitty-gritty & in-depth topics all day long, but sometimes looking at things from a high level can make it a little easier to implement into your life.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • I’m a perfectionist, so trying new things isn’t necessarily my cup of tea because I want to be good at things right from the jump. So when I do try something new, it’s kind of a big deal to me. But I have learned over the years that the more I put myself out there & try new things, the easier it is to let go of some of that perfectionist personality & desire to be in control of how everything turns out.
    • And it’s proven that spending time engaging in hobbies & activities you enjoy is great for improving mental health & wellness, as well as helping to prevent stress & aid in depression. But it’s the new hobbies & activities that will stretch & challenge who you are as a person, which is important.
    • Obviously, it’s going to be the easiest to try things you are semi-familiar with or things that are related to what you already do, but what would really help you grow & change will be stepping out of your comfort zone & experiencing things that are totally a left turn.
    • The best thing about hobbies is that there are so many options & can be relaxing, uplifting, physical, so many different versions.
    • And why you choose a hobby is dependent on you & your needs. Maybe you want to do something that will help you be more social or maybe it’s a way for you to learn something new to challenge yourself or to provide a distraction from other things in your life. Either way, the best way to go into something new is to have an attitude of excitement & gratitude. Excitement because it could be something fun & enjoyable, but also gratitude because the ability to be grateful for anything & everything we are able to be involved with is super important.
    • So let’s chat about what to do when you are looking to start a new hobby:
    • 1. Think about what you used to enjoy in the past & decide if you should try that again.
    • 2. Turn something you enjoy into a hobby. (Like to eat? Learn to cook. Like to watch sports? Play a sport.)
    • 3. Try someone else’s hobby out.
    • 4. Find something that distracts you or calms you. (Knitting, yoga, running, puzzles)
    • 5. Find a list online & try something new & different.

  • Read More Books for Self Help - Practical Self Care Tips

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Practical Self Care Tips

This week I want to talk to share with you some super practical self-care tips.

Sometimes it's just best to get back to some basic tips to improve your life. We can talk about the nitty-gritty & in-depth topics all day long, but sometimes looking at things from a high level can make it a little easier to implement into your life.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • I am a self help book junkie. I have a huge collection of self help books, both in print & on my e-reader that I have enjoyed or am looking forward to reading some time in the future. And I love the idea of being able to read a book and feel better or understand what you’re going through a little better.
    • Some of my favorite self help books have been by Gabby Bernstein & another book I read when I was going through my season of self-harm. If you’re going through self-harm, send me a message on Instagram or via email & I will look up the name for you or might be able to send you a copy to help you out. It was a fantastic book for understanding what I was going through & changing my mindset.
    • But back to Gabby Bernstein, the discovery of her books for me has been recent. It was only the top of this year that I started reading her books & really loving her point of view on manifestation & how we should view & treat ourselves. The first book of hers I have read is Super Attractor & I have 2 more books I purchased from her to read next.
    • Another book I have started reading recently is Believe It by Jamie Kern Lima. Now, this isn’t really a self help book, I would say it’s more of an inspirational book that will get you pumped for going after your goals, dreams & desires. And I wanted to bring this up because I don’t think that the book itself has to be labeled ‘self help’ for it to help you. It just needs to be something that will encourage you, push you to make moves & give you inspiration.
    • And there is a ton of backlash against self help books because it’s very common for people to read a book meant to help you move in the right direction of your life but do nothing with the information gained. This is where the trouble lies.
    • Self help books get a bad rap, not because of the books themselves, but with the lack of followthrough from the reader.
    • So let’s chat about how you can make the most out of reading self help books:
    • 1. Create a short, not long list of books to read.
    • 2. Make it easy with audiobooks.
    • 3. Don’t push through terrible books.
    • 4. Take notes as you read.
    • 5. Actually apply the knowledge you are learning.

  • Encourage Yourself - Be Your Own Mentor

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Be Your Own Mentor

This week I want to talk to share with you how you can be your own mentor!

Mentoring yourself is easier than it sounds. By taking certain steps to understand yourself better, improve on what you feel is lacking & committing to learning & encouraging yourself more, you will be on your way to bettering yourself & igniting personal growth.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • My whole life, I always had to be the one that kept myself encouraged. And it’s really only because I was put down a lot, spoken to with a super condescending attitude & I lacked people that believed in me the majority of my childhood & adolescent life.
    • And those experiences for sure helped me a ton understand that I need to be there for myself. I need to be the first one of the case of picking myself up when I’m down & that if I wait for someone else to do it first, it might not happen for quite some time.
    • Encouragement is one of those things that a lot of times we expect to come from outside of us. We usually think someone else needs to come from behind us & lend some motivation, inspiration & encouragement to us when we are down. It doesn’t really seem like something we should have to do for ourselves because there is this thought that we have people in our life to come pick us up.
    • But other people are not in control of our feelings or how we rebound from whatever we are going through. Others may be a helpful influence, but aren’t the main resource to look to. You are the only one that has total control over how you’re feeling & what needs to be done to move forward from your current struggle.
    • But a lot of time, this isn’t the case. We will have to be the person that is there first to look to the gratitude & remember the blessings & pull ourselves up so we can move on with our lives. And we shouldn’t be looking to someone else to do that for us anyway. We don’t need to rely on others for something we can do just as well & need to be able to do on our own, just in case those relationships change & fade.
    • So let’s chat about some tips on how to encourage yourself:
    • 1. Remember your past successes, wins & positive experiences.
    • 2. Celebrate the progress you’re making towards your goals.
    • 3. Have those positive, encouraging influences you can glean from.
    • 4. Continue to grow & learn. Momentum in life provides tons of encouragement.
    • 5. Speak life (& rewards) to yourself.

  • Become A Life Long Learner - Be Your Own Mentor

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Be Your Own Mentor

This week I want to talk to share with you how you can be your own mentor!

Mentoring yourself is easier than it sounds. By taking certain steps to understand yourself better, improve on what you feel is lacking & committing to learning & encouraging yourself more, you will be on your way to bettering yourself & igniting personal growth.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • I always loved school growing up. I would be excited to go to school most days because I do enjoy learning. Even in college, I really enjoyed learning new things & getting into interesting conversations that would teach me something, even if it was just about real life & not academics.
    • But I did struggle a lot in school because my home life was not the best. I also let myself become so distracted with most things around me that I got behind on homework & struggled to ask for help. I have terrible memories of crying in my room because I just didn’t understand the math equations I was supposed to do. I just didn’t get it.
    • But there were for sure other things I was really good at, like writing & public speaking & theater. These were just things that came easier to me.
    • But even as an adult, I have such a thirst to learn. I enjoy learning a lot about the hobbies I have & about what other people are interested in, because the decisions & thoughts other people have interest me so much. It’s the reason I went to school to be a psychologist, I love learning how people work.
    • And to mentor yourself in the best way, you need to commit to becoming a lifelong learner. Making the decision to consistently be learning, in all different ways, will really help you have a better understanding of so many things, but also be able to adapt easier & quicker, because you may have enough base knowledge of so many things that you are able to pick up the details even easier.
    • Being open to learning on the regular will also expose you to new things you may never have discovered. Which is fun because new experiences can bring a lot of enjoyment & discovery.
    • In addition, you are generally more open to different ideals, ways of life & people because having a heart to learn, which can also lead to a heart to understand things differently than you.
    • So let’s chat about some tips on how to become a lifelong learner:
    • 1. Try new things on a regular basis.
    • 2. Don’t be afraid to ask more questions.
    • 3. Learn to embrace change.
    • 4. Know it’s never too late to try something.

  • Create Community with Peers - Be Your Own Mentor

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Be Your Own Mentor

This week I want to talk to share with you how you can be your own mentor!

Mentoring yourself is easier than it sounds. By taking certain steps to understand yourself better, improve on what you feel is lacking & committing to learning & encouraging yourself more, you will be on your way to bettering yourself & igniting personal growth.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • I spent a majority of my life pretending to be an extrovert because it was the best way to get to know people & make friends, but pretending to be something I wasn’t became crazily overwhelming & led to some burnout from interacting with people.
    • But as time has gone on, I have become a little better at networking with people, but to be honest with you, I haven’t been as adamant at it until I started chatting with people on clubhouse. And if you aren’t aware of what Clubhouse is, it’s an audio-only app that allows you to join thousands of different rooms, depending on interest, and listen and/or speak with others about those interests. And I have made connections & friends on this app. Which is shocking for me, because I was never very good at manifesting.
    • But I believe making an effort to network & get to know people is so beneficial because you can learn new things. And learning turns into growth for yourself, so it’s a win-win situation. Plus, it’s fun to have more people to chat with & continue to build community with.
    • Even when networking with peers & others that work & live life in the same way as you do, it’s important to reach to the edge of the sphere, too, because you can still learn & build community with people that aren’t the exact same as you. Diversify your connections, too.
    • Making the decision to network with peers, whether you are an introvert or extrovert, is important because of the main thing I have mentioned a bunch of times already: community. If you’re going to mentor yourself, you need to have a community to go back to for learning opportunities & to get feedback on things you’re investing your time in & to spark your creativity by speaking with others & getting inspired by what they are involved in.
    • So let’s chat about some ways you can start networking with peers & become good at it:
    • 1. Start with people you know. (Get referrals for people you should connect with from people you already know & spend more time getting to know the people you already know.
    • 2. Truly be yourself. (Don’t pretend to be someone else or know things you don’t know. Be authentic.)
    • 3. Listen to understand, not to reply.
    • 4. Get to know others outside of your own interests & work. Diversify!
    • 5. Explore social media as a means to network.

  • Get Out of Your Comfort Zone - Be Your Own Mentor

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Be Your Own Mentor

This week I want to talk to share with you how you can be your own mentor!

Mentoring yourself is easier than it sounds. By taking certain steps to understand yourself better, improve on what you feel is lacking & committing to learning & encouraging yourself more, you will be on your way to bettering yourself & igniting personal growth.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • I tend to stay in friendships, jobs & activities longer than I should because I like to be comfortable. I like to be safe & not have to worry about pleasing someone (if I can get away with it) or having to worry about what it would mean to make a change or have to put forth as much effort as I did in the beginning.
    • Why you ask? Because it’s scary. It’s scary & hard to step outside of your comfort zone because of the unknown, the deathly uncertainty & the fear of not knowing what the heck to do when you step out.
    • Usually, for me, I have to be overzealous about whatever it is I want or need to do that would be considered stepping outside of my comfort zone. I have to be so overly hyped so that it distracts me from all the fear I have of whatever it is. And this is a tactic I have used for years on end. It just works for me, but I have been working harder to just step out into new things, without needing to hype myself up, because I’d like to push through that fear & try new things on the regular.
    • But let’s recognize that stepping out of your comfort zone is really tough. It does get easier as time goes on, as with most things, but it’s natural to always hold onto a little bit of fear/excitement because of the initial jump out of the unknown.
    •  The thing about getting out of your comfort zone that causes trouble for people is the fear of the unknown. Also the fear of your values & beliefs clashing with whatever this new experience will bring. Those kinds of experiences can rock our lives & we aren’t sure what to think or even feel, besides fear.
    • But what I believe we don’t realize & forget is that there is so much to learn & grow in when we decide to step outside. There is a feeling of increased anxiety & risk when doing something different & new, but it’s always so worth it. Even when it doesn’t turn out, it’s still a valuable experience because you for sure learned something.
    • So let’s chat about how we can get outside of our comfort zone:
    • 1. Switch up your daily routine a bit.
    • 2. Make a point to learn something new.
    • 3. Identify certain things you want to overcome.
    • 4. Get more comfortable being uncomfortable.
    • 5. Spend more time with people that step outside of their comfort zones.

  • Discover Your Strengths & Weaknesses - Be Your Own Mentor

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Be Your Own Mentor

This week I want to talk to share with you how you can be your own mentor!

Mentoring yourself is easier than it sounds. By taking certain steps to understand yourself better, improve on what you feel is lacking & committing to learning & encouraging yourself more, you will be on your way to bettering yourself & igniting personal growth.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • It always starts with a list. Everyone always wants you to make a list, 2 columns, & sit down & think about what you are strong at & what you are weak at. But there are never guided questions. There aren’t any hints to help you think of anything deep (except the whole thing about making your strengths into weaknesses) & I’m pretty sure most of the time these lists aren’t really helpful, unless you spend a while deeply thinking about it. Being actually honest with yourself is necessary to have usable results.
    • Anytime I think about my strengths & weaknesses, I go blank. I can’t really come up with the strengths that I feel confident about because I struggle with my self-esteem & self-worth. Naming weaknesses is easy, because most people don’t have a problem picking apart the negative parts about them, but the positives, the strengths, are much harder.
    • To be honest with you, for me, I’m truly afraid to admit most strengths I have because I’m so insecure. I feel insignificant & don’t think I have the power to identify any strengths about myself. Again, it’s a self-worth problem.
    • It’s a vicious circle to live in & one I am trying to break out of often. I’m making progress.
    • Discovering your strengths & weaknesses is important to be your own mentor. It’s great to know what you excel in & what you should spend more time getting stronger at. These are the things that will help you excel in your life & what will continue to drive you to be a lifelong learner.
    • Knowing your strength & weaknesses gives you a better idea of your resourcefulness & shortcomings, which also aids in creating better plans to go after your goals, cut back on experiences that might not benefit you & have a better idea on how to navigate your journey.
    • Let’s talk about some tips of how to identify your strength & weaknesses:
    • 1. Create a list, but with 4 columns. Have one for natural strengths, one for natural weaknesses, one for learned strengths & one for learned weaknesses (observed behaviors, taught wrong things).
    • 2. Ask someone you trust for feedback.
    • 3. Ask yourself deeper questions to help weed out the less significant strengths & weaknesses. Here is a shortlist of examples:
      • A. What was the happiest day of your life?
      • B. What do others consistently compliment you on?
      • C. What energizes you?
      • D. What drains your energy?
      • E. What do you wish you could change about yourself?
      • F. What do you typically procrastinate on?
      • G. What’s your biggest failure?

  • Quit Sacrificing Sleep - Let's Quit Together

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Let's Quit Together

This week I want to talk to you about how we can stop engaging in behaviors that aren't helping us become our best selves.

Making the decision to quit doing things like gossiping, saying sorry all the time or sacrificing sleep will help us focus more on what is actually important in our lives, lean more towards the positive & become our best selves.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • What better way to wrap up this topic by speaking on sleep, which is crazy important to all of us.
    • Sleep is something so many of us take for granted. You just decide that four, five or six hours is enough for you. But what really happens is you continue to live in that reality & get less & less sleep & feel like you’re never going to recover.
    • And sleep might be something that is on the bottom of your list & just not really important to you because you feel like all the things you are doing in place of sleep are more important. But you may feel this way because you can’t remember how it felt to have a full night of sleep. You may have forgotten how much better you feel during the day when you have slept more than 5 hours & really aren’t feeling unbelievably exhausted by the end of the day.
    • But let’s go over the obvious reasons why sacrificing sleep isn’t a great option:
    • There’s always moodiness, irritation & sometimes lack of clarity. There is also concern for high blood pressure, weakened immune system, weight gain, depression & so many other things.
    • I know from experience that lack of sleep is terrible on your body. I got so sick from working a night shift job, coming home to nap for 90 minutes, then getting up to take my kid to school & then still go do work for 2 hours. I would then rush home to sleep until it was time to pick my kid up from school, come home to nap a little more & then go to work. It was the worst thing for my body, for sure. It contributed to me developing my autoimmune disease.
    • And honestly, the more you sacrifice sleep for investing time into relationships or projects that you feel are more important to you, the less & less you will be able to do that because the exhaustion from not sleeping will add up. You can only go so far as sacrificing your sleep.
    • So let’s chat about some ways you can quit sacrificing sleep:
    • 1. Realize how getting more sleep could better your overall life.
    • 2. Start slow with getting to bed earlier. Find the perfect amount of sleep.
    • 3. Find other pockets of time for personal time.
    • uncomfortable & don’t let someone else abuse you.

  • Quit Being Codependent - Let's Quit Together

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Let's Quit Together

This week I want to talk to you about how we can stop engaging in behaviors that aren't helping us become our best selves.

Making the decision to quit doing things like gossiping, saying sorry all the time or sacrificing sleep will help us focus more on what is actually important in our lives, lean more towards the positive & become our best selves.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • Codependency is a crutch & reliance on others because your emotional needs were not met, generally in your childhood. You tend to lack boundaries, have a poor sense of yourself & low self-esteem & are a people pleaser.
    • And codependency can develop in all sorts of different relationships, not just romantic relationships.
    • And I want you to know that this type of behavior goes well beyond wanting to take care of someone that is struggling, feeling comforted by their presence or even occasionally making sacrifices for someone you love.
    • The general idea of codependency is an imbalanced relationship where one person has the need to be wanted by the other person & sacrifices their own needs to care for the other person. One person is the giver & one person for the taker.
    • And it’s pretty hard to get out of this cycle of codependency because if the taker continues to enable the giver, it’s harder for the giver to realize what is wrong.
    • If you’re unsure whether or not you’re in a codependent relationship, here are some common symptoms of this behavior:
    • Feeling like you have to walk on eggshells to avoid potential conflict.
    • Having sympathy for the other person, even if they have caused you pain.
    • The need to check-in with the other person to make sure you have permission to do what you want to do.
    • Apologizes, even if it’s not your fault.
    • Doing things for the other person, even if it makes you feel uncomfortable.
    • These are just some things that typically happen when involved in codependent relationships. But one of the biggest things about codependency is that the giver tends to lose themselves because all the focus is on the taker.
    • So let’s chat about some ways we can quit being codependent:
    • 1. Become aware that you’re in a codependency cycle & identify your patterns.

  • Quit Living Your Life in Fear - Let's Quit Together

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Let's Quit Together

This week I want to talk to you about how we can stop engaging in behaviors that aren't helping us become our best selves.

Making the decision to quit doing things like gossiping, saying sorry all the time or sacrificing sleep will help us focus more on what is actually important in our lives, lean more towards the positive & become our best selves.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • Fear. It just takes over our lives. It changes our view on reality in an instant because we can cause ourselves to believe certain things, especially if it’s based in previous experiences & beliefs that we grew up on.
    • Fear can lead you down some paths that will just deepen your fears more & more. A lot of times you will settle for less than you want because you are afraid to take next steps to go after the things you really want. There is also the drive to be seen as perfect as possible so that you can avoid any criticisms or judgements, which you are in fear of receiving from people you want acceptance from.
    • And you know how I talk about boundaries a lot? Living in fear will also cause you to lack boundaries & say yes when you really need to say no. And to not share your opinion or true feelings with others because of any possible backlash.
    • And you may not realize it, but fear causes a lot of inner pain, which can lead to you needing to numb that pain with alcohol, food or having the distraction of being too busy.
    • Living in fear will really hold you back from almost everything in your life. If you are constantly worrying about how you are going to impress someone or if you are going to fail at doing this or if you will embarrass yourself doing that, you will always be constantly overwhelmed & the fear will continue to build up.
    • So let’s talk about some tips on how to quit living your life in fear:
    • 1. Re-evaluate the way you’re thinking. You don’t have to always do things the same way you always have.
    • 2. Look deeply at the things you’re afraid of & start to poke holes.
    • 3. Adopt a growth mindset. Understand that mistakes & failures are the best ways to learn.
    • 4. Live your life more in the present.
