  • It's Perfectly Okay to Cry - Express Your Feelings

Were you told that crying & being vulnerable was inappropriate & makes you look weak? Whoever told you that was wrong & doesn't know what they are talking about. Crying is actually a sign of strength & acceptance of ourselves. Let's talk about why!

    Show Notes:

    • Sometimes you just can’t help it. Sometimes you are just overwhelmed with emotions & feel like the best release you can have is crying. And I totally agree. And I have always felt this way, even when I was told that crying is unacceptable & displays weakness. It’s because I always feel at least a little bit better after getting the cry out & will feel worse over time if I don’t release the emotions somehow. And at least with crying you can do it anywhere.
    • For me growing up, I was told not to cry and I’m sure this happened to many other people. Because it can be seen as a weakness, as most displays of emotions & vulnerability can be, it’s not tolerated by a lot of people & families. Did this happen to you? My father wanted us to always look like a strong little family, which included not being affected by anything that happened to us.
    • But I want you to know it doesn’t have to be this way. You can be emotional. You can cry. You can be vulnerable & still be seen & considered to be a strong & capable person. It doesn’t diminish who you are or what you are capable of. It’s a normal, human function & reaction to whatever causes you to have those feelings.
    • Crying is a normal, human response to pain, frustration, sadness, so many emotions, and it’s brought out by different experiences, dependent on the individual. It’s also very helpful for releasing the stress that can come with these experiences.
    • Crying is also a representation of how comfortable you are with yourself, which also demonstrates how important emotional health is to you & can also set the example for others that it’s ok to be vulnerable. It’s a sign of strength, that you are able to be that open & bare without caring what others think of you.
    • Today I want to talk about why crying is a good experience for us all:
    • 1. Great for Self-Soothing. (according to research, crying releases oxytocin & endorphins, which help you ease the pain you are experiencing & bring calm after it’s over.)
    • 2. Crying Can Help You Move Forward. (crying will help you release the pent-up emotions & not feel the need to hold onto whatever happened. Letting it out is similar to letting it go)
    • 3. Crying Can Restore Emotional Balance. (according to Yale University research, crying can help restore emotional equilibrium because whether you are crying because you’re happy or sad, it allows your body to recover from such strong emotions by letting it out through tears.)
    • 3. Find better coping mechanisms.

  • Adults Shouldn't Throw Tantrums - Managing Your Emotions

We have all had an adult temper tantrum. We have all had a reaction that was a little bigger than the situation called for.  And we have all been really upset & decided to say something we may have regretted. This is why I think it would be helpful to talk about how to identify these behaviors & overcome these types of reactions.

    Show Notes:

    • Even if you’re not a parent, you still know what a temper tantrum looks like. It’s the kicking, the yelling, the screaming & the constant acknowledgment & feeling of not getting your way. And unfortunately, this isn’t something that a lot of people leave behind in their childhoods.
    • Adults still have tantrums every now & then. Some more than others. But this is something we can nip in the bud, if we are aware of what actions would represent a tantrum. We are going to discuss some behaviors to be aware of so you can identify if you have behaviors that qualify as a tantrum or maybe in someone else. And then some quick solutions for moving aware from this way of expressing strong feelings.
    • And it’s important to know that adult tantrums can stem back to not learning how to control & handle your emotions as a child. This is generally something you learn & understand from your parents or whomever your caregiver was, but it doesn’t always happen. If you don’t see socially appropriate behaviors to express anger, frustration or disappointment modeled for you, it can be tough to learn what to do as you grow & learn in life.
    • For me, I learned how to handle my emotions in a negative way, but opposite of a tantrum. It just wasn’t acknowledged. So you can see how the spectrum can go both ways & obviously, you want to land somewhere in the middle. You want to be able to manage how you’re feeling & have appropriate ways to cope, understand & move forward.
    • Today I want to share some behaviors to be aware of when it comes to identifying adult tantrums and then give some quick tips to overcome expressing your emotions this way:
    • 1. Cursing people out, name-calling & yelling over people to be heard.
    • 2. Increased agitation & irritation.
    • 3. Storming off, shutting down & explosive reactions.
    • Now let’s chat about what can be done to cope with these behaviors & moving away from dealing with your emotions this way:
    • 1. Identify your triggers. (notice if something is constantly causing you to react in a certain way)
    • 2. Learn how to communicate better.
    • 3. Find better coping mechanisms.

  • Becoming a Better Friend - Tips On How to Strengthen Your Friendships

Sometimes we take friendships for granted, but this is when trouble seeps in & we can let miscommunication, frustration & pain overtake the whole thing & possibly ruin the relationship.

    Show Notes:

    • I tell a lot of my friends that I’m not a great friend. I am not very good at keeping in touch or coming up with ideas on what to do together. I also have an issue with how much to trust my friends with, like my past trauma or current struggles I am going through because of my own personal abandonment issues. But these are just the things I struggle with as a friend & I know everyone has their own things they lack in friendships, which is why I wanted to chat about this today.
    • I believe that if we take the time to be the best friend we can be to people we say we care about, it will make all the difference in how long the relationship lasts, how deep it goes & how well you will be able to get through eventual bumps in the road.
    • And sometimes we don’t even realize that we aren’t being good friends unless we have people in our lives that are willing to speak up & tell us what’s up. But if you don’t know that is part of being a good friend, then you could get stuck in a loop of miscommunication, frustration & pain within your friendship.
    • And I think we can all agree that it’s worth it to take care of our friends as best we can with all the craziness happening in the world.
    • Tips on how to be a better friend:
    • 1. Communicate with honesty & openness.
    • 2. Don’t be flaky.
    • 3. Have empathy & be a good listener. (understand what they are going through.)
    • 4. Be Your True Self. Don’t be fake.
    • 5. Show gratitude for that person.
    • 6. Be accepting & forgiving.

  • Are You Spending Money to Be Happy?

It can be so easy to substitute true happiness with a new purchase. Spending money on material things is the easier path to go with making yourself happy, rather than actually dealing with the problem or issue.  But it's never long-lasting.

    Show Notes:

    • It’s not a great habit. It’s actually a really bad habit because if you over do it, you might run out of money to pay your actual bills & cover other needs.
    • But spending money feels like such an easy, quick fix, doesn’t it? You can just walk into Target, take 10 steps in any direction, find something you don’t need, but can talk yourself into wanting & and buy it because it feels nice to have something new.
    • It feels nice & good to have new things because it can prevent you from focusing on what the real problems are in your life. Little distractions, even treating yourself to a Starbucks, can temporarily take up some time in your life that would be better served working through your struggles. But that’s the hard way, which isn’t as fun as the easy way, spending money. This can even be seen in making a point to spend tons of money on other people, especially if you are a people pleaser. You want to shower someone else in gifts, create happiness for them, believing that will in turn, make you happy.
    • Spending money creates this validation that you can be happy because you were able to buy a new thing that puts a temporary smile on your face. It’s the temporary feeling of happiness that draws us in.
    • But I also want to mention the idea of spending money because of boredom or loneliness. Sometimes you don’t have the courage to make new friends, so it’s easier to just go buy new things. Maybe you feel like your life is at a standstill or an overwhelming crossroads & you just don’t want to deal with it, so shopping it is! Or even feeling like you’ve been abandoned or ignored, so you decide to buy yourself some new friends, like clothes, home decor or maybe a new phone.
    • There are an endless amount of reasons or excuses for why we spend money to secure temporary happiness, but no matter how much we buy & spend, it doesn’t get better for the future. There is no long term benefit. Except for a bunch of things you might need to throw away someday.
    • Today I want to specifically talk about some reasons why trying to buy happiness isn’t going to work:
    • 1. There will always be something new. The spend will never end. And someone else will always have more.
    • 2. It’s a distraction from what is really going on.
    • 3. You won’t always impress others with your purchases.
    • 4. More crap makes more clutter and makes more stress.
    • 5. Things aren’t the answer, but an experience could help.

  • Have You Outgrown Your Friends?

Friendships & close relationships are cherished things. But sometimes these friendships are not meant to last forever & moving on is the healthiest choice. Today we are identifying outgrowing relationships & what that looks like.

    Show Notes:

    • There is a particular person in my life that I had a great friendship with for many years, but there did come a time where I was forcing my relationship until I realized it was because I had outgrown her.
    • And this was a painful realization because she used to be such a great friend of mine & it hurt to know we just weren’t at that place anymore, because our lives became distinctly different than when we were in high school or even college.
    • But this is something that happens, whether we want to point it out & realize it or not. Think about all the friendships that you have had & then think about how many you have now & what happened in between. You could say you grew apart is because of the actual physical distance put between you both, but I’m sure you have others that can be an example of what I’m speaking about.
    • My drift & outgrow phase happened because my husband & I were focusing more on business & investments, but my friend over here was focused on still living by the seat of her pants. Not really settling, which is fine. It just didn’t match up with us & created separation & not as many commonalities. And once you lose those connections & don’t make new ones, the outgrowing period begins.
    • There is this awkward phase you start to fall into & if you pay attention, you can predict the fallout or maybe save it, if that’s what you’re interested in doing.
    • But I honestly don’t think it’s a bad thing that we outgrow people in our lives. Different seasons of life require different people for us to know & engage with, different pieces of knowledge for us to learn & understand, changes in habits & hobbies and just letting go of what sustained you in the past & looking forward to what is going to benefit you even more in the future.
    • Ask yourself these questions to find out if you have outgrown the people in your life:
    • 1. Are you starting to make excuses when this person wants to plan time with you?
    • 2. Do you find yourself getting more annoyed with them?
    • 3. Have you stopped sharing personal & emotional details with this person?
    • 4. Do you feel like you’re in unrelatable seasons of life?
    • 5. Are you having less fun with them?

  • Anger Management - How to Deal With Your Anger

Anger is a completely normal & human emotion. But sometimes we let it spin out of control & aren't sure how to reign it in. That's what I want to chat with you about today.

    Show Notes:

    • Anger is something I have gotten so much better at managing, it shocks me even. But it’s taken a lot of time, work & even self-discipline to buckle down & get it under control.
    • And anger can be caused by both internal & external experiences, like being triggered by past memories or your own personal feelings about something that is bothering you & being caught in traffic or having a disagreement with someone.
    • But I want you to know that anger is totally normal & healthy. It’s absolutely ok to be angry & express those emotions. It’s just a matter of being in control of those emotions & not letting it get out of hand in a physical way or taking it out on someone else, even mentally & emotionally.
    • Because anger tends to lean towards an aggressive response. And this is a natural way to respond because it allows us to have the energy to fight back, if necessary. But not everything that leads us to anger needs to be fought. Sometimes it just needs to be accepted or understood or nothing at all.
    • A lot of times anger doesn’t need to lead to anything. It can just be an emotion that teaches you what triggers you or what is bothering you beneath the surface or what you’ve been trying to avoid but keeps coming up with different experiences.
    • And how people express anger is very different. Some will be more easily triggered by anger because of how they were raised or lack of not knowing how to handle their intense emotions. But others will be more scaled back, hold it all in until they explode like a volcano, harbor resentments & grudges and just be grumpy & irritable, while still not fully dealing with their feelings.
    • But I definitely want to make sure it’s understood that we should embrace our feelings of anger, but be aware of what you might want to do to express that anger, other than acknowledging it.
    • And after embracing, make time to understand what those feelings mean to you. What can you learn about yourself from these feelings? Take the time to identify what triggers your anger, then what plan you should have ready to prevent you from fully into your anger rage.
    • So let’s chat about some tips I have for how to handle your anger.
    • 1. Think Before You Speak.
    • 2. Rehearse Your Response & Communicate Your Feelings Clearly. (use I statements, confrontation)
    • 3. Take A Time Out & Say A Mantra. (exercise, walking, favorite activity/hobby)
    • 4. Change Your Routine (if it’s a constant thing that brings anger out of you).
    • 5. Speak With Someone to Vent & Decompress.
    • 6. Gratitude Always Helps & Don’t Hold Grudges.

  • Tips On Receiving Criticism - How to Handle Feedback From Others

Handling criticism can be really tough, depending on who is giving it to you & how you decide to receive it, but if you have the right mindset, it can be one of the best opportunities for you to become your best self.

    Show Notes:

    • Sometimes I feel like the person that came up with constructive criticism did it so they had an excuse to say whatever they wanted without getting in trouble or having guilt.
    • But in all seriousness, I do appreciate criticism because I like to know the truth about how I am doing, whether at work, socially or with my fam & friends.
    • I know a lot of people don’t value feedback as much as they should because it can be really hard to take, accept & understand. Plus, there is an exceptional amount of people that don’t know how to deliver it, either. It can come across as real aggressive & dismissive if not communicated well.
    • But even if it is spewed with hate & no consideration, criticism can still be gold.
    • Once you receive feedback from someone, you can get a true handle on what is important to someone else, how much time they actually took to evaluate you or what you've done & see yourself from someone else’s perspective.
    • Perspective changes are so integral because it allows you to understand more of a situation, experience it from another outlook. This can shift your mindset of how to communicate better with others & be aware of things you might be doing that aren’t very helpful to others that you weren’t aware of. We will have no idea if we are being offensive, dismissive, rude or anything else if someone doesn’t give us feedback in regards to those things.
    • And it’s never going to feel like the best thing ever. Because you are getting somewhat bad news. But like I hinted at before, it can be seen as a positive & gold, you just have to decide that’s the mindset you’re going to take with this type of experience.
    • Something to consider when you are about to receive criticism is to take control of the situation so you don’t feel helpless. If you feel like the other person is coming in hot, it’s in your best interest to defuse the situation as much as possible so the other person will become calmer, thus presenting their criticism with a lighter touch.
    • So let’s go over some tips on how to handle criticism:
    • 1. Don’t React Immediately.
    • 2. Don’t Take the Feedback Personally. (take yourself out of the circumstance & focus on what is being evaluated)
    • 3. Appreciate All Criticism.
    • 4. Ask Clarifying Questions.
    • 5. You Might Have to Admit You’re Wrong.
    • 6. Ask For a Follow-Up.
    • 7. Know You Can’t Please Everyone.

  • Are You Making Your Anxiety Worse? Tips On What Not to Do

Most of the time we feel like we are doing our best in managing our struggles & dealing with what comes at us on a daily basis, but there are times when we are making the situation worse without even knowing it.

Sometimes we are making our anxiety worse & don't see the connection on how that is happening.

    Show Notes:

    • I would say I have middle-of-the-line anxiety problems. I also experience panic attacks, but more often it’s just plain anxiety. And I have found different ways to cope with it that have helped, but there have also been some mistakes I have made along the way because I didn’t pay attention to how certain things I did affected my anxiety.
    • Sometimes we think we are doing the best for ourselves, putting in the time, effort & sometimes money to take care of ourselves & work through our struggles, but that can sometimes backfire.
    • And not because we aren’t doing our best to really figure out what’s going to be best for us, but because we mistakenly choose the wrong thing or don’t really know what would be best for us & might be settling for something that’s just ok.
    • I thought it would be helpful to discuss some things we might be doing that aren’t benefiting us as much as we’d like or don’t even know it’s something we should avoid. I have a good handful of examples I want to go over quickly.
    • Let’s talk about skipping meals. This is something I used to do a ton. And it was for one reason or another, but I realized that if I was skipping meals, it would make my anxiety worse. I would experience irritability, lightheadedness & some confusion because my blood sugar was low & adding all those things into an anxious moment or day just drags everything down even more.
    • Just as bad as skipping meals, not getting enough water in can be an issue, too. I feel like death when I don’t drink enough water. And not drinking enough water can put your body into stress, bringing up anxiety symptoms & feelings, which could progress into a whole attack.
    • The people you spend the majority of your time with have a great effect on you. So if you are constantly being bombarded with negativity from your friends & family, it’s not surprise you are struggling with anxiety, because those negative thoughts drive your anxiety higher & higher. Worrying over what could or couldn’t happen or what’s going wrong, it’s all too much a lot of the time.
    • Something that you may not expect to be an issue with your anxiety is not having any goals. If you lack life goals, you will have nothing to push yourself to work on or look forward to. And these things also give you hope, which is super helpful when managing anxiety, as it helps with pushing back the worry.
    • Are you ignoring your anxiety? Maybe you’re just hoping it’s going to go away on its own, but it’s not. You have to face it head-on & figure out what needs to change in your life for you to cope better & understand what is triggering your anxiety.
    • There are so many more things that you could be doing that is making your anxiety worse that I haven’t mentioned here. Here are a few more that I’m not going to elaborate on, but want to throw out for your own knowledge: lack of sleep, not exercising, drinking caffeine, eating too much sugar & comparing yourself to others.

  • What Does It Mean to Be Successful?

Everyone's definition of success is going to be different, naturally, since we all have varying interests, passions & purposes.  Success is tied to what means the most to you, what you value as important, impactful & what represented a challenge to you that you were able to overcome or a desire achieved.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • I always had the desire to be someone who was super successful because I played small all my life & had this fantasy that someday I would graduate out of this type of thinking & be bold, brave & accomplished. But that’s not quite how it went.
    • I would say that I wanted to be successful for the wrong reasons at first. I was really focused on doing it to show other people up & make them see how great of a person I was, which is something they neglected to see when I was younger. Or I needed validation that I was someone that mattered in the world because I achieved some sort of success that is measurable to others.
    • And a lot of people will count themselves successful if they are popular, making a ton of money & have enough attention on them. But this isn’t really that fulfilling. This can all really turn lackluster quicker than we think because it all gets old & doesn’t hold any true meaning to us. It’s not connected to our purpose. It doesn’t get us up in the morning or bring excitement every day.
    • Being successful is about achieving what you want because you want it, because it aligns with your personal goals & purpose & because it’s something that means something to you, not someone else. No one else matters when obtaining success because it’s something you will have to put the work into & needs to satisfy you in the end. Think about doing all this work & then no one really cares in the end. That would feel like a giant waste of time.
    • And your successes aren’t going to match up to someone else’s ideas of success, which isn’t something to worry about. We all have different perspectives of what the finish line looks like for success & that’s important because it needs to fit who you are & what works for you. Comparison will really be the thief of joy here, if you let it, because you feeling successful as a mother because you child graduated from college isn’t going to be the same as someone that feels successful as a newly licensed pilot or someone speaking on a stage for the first time or actually getting through 30 days without a substance they are quitting. It’s all success.
    • Plus, a lot of times success is measured in how you feel at the end, not necessarily what you get. For example, being successful could mean having the ability to give financially to an organization that is important to you. Or seeing that you have made a difference in someone else’s life through mentoring or support. It could also just be having the ability to do what you love instead of something you don’t enjoy for work everyday.
    • Cultivating success in your life also means more positive moments to dwell on, but also redefined purpose & possible recovery from pain that may have been caused by failures & mistakes made in the past.
    • If you haven’t lately, ask yourself what you think success looks like for you? Think about it & come tell me what you discovered.

  • Talking About Petty People - How to Stop Being Petty

Hello Everyone & Welcome to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Today on the show I am talking about: How to Stop Being Petty

Have you struggled with pettiness & making things bigger than they need to be?

Today we are going to go over some examples of being petty & how to stop engaging in this behavior. It's the childish way out of dealing with your insecurities, so we need to overcome it.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • Being petty, among other things you probably know about if you’re not new here, is a big problem for me. I can make almost anything into a bigger deal than it needs to be because I just get so caught up in pettiness.
    • Now, if you don’t know what it means to be petty, in short, it means that you will take something that most other people would find insignificant or trivial into something bigger than it needs to be & use this as an excuse to be upset over nothing & really just draw attention to yourself.
    • So for me, I would be petty about someone not treating me the way I would treat them & hold it against them like a shield. It’s ridiculous, I know. I would also do things like avoid someone when they cancel plans on me at the last minute without any reason or think about doing the same thing to them to make them feel as bad as I did. Or be bitter & ask for endless apologies when people go out & don’t think to invite me or my husband goes out & gets himself coffee & forgets to bring me back one.
    • Obviously, this isn’t something you want to make a habit in your life. Being petty can cause rifts in relationships & possibly push them away & end relationships if behaviors aren’t changed.
    • It’s very much an eye for an eye type of thing, in my mind. And that’s a problem. Pettiness can also be seen as having great insecurity, but in disguise by way of hurting someone else on purpose because you felt hurt or disrespected first.
    • Now that you have some great examples of what it means to be petty, let’s chat about how we can stop being petty:
    • 1. Admit to Yourself You’re Being Petty
    • 2. Lower Your Expectations of Others & Create Standards.
    • 3. Practice Forgiveness.
    • 4. See It From Their Point of View
    • 5. Confrontation.
