  • I Have the Power to Create Change - My Favorite Daily Affirmations

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Tuesday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: My Favorite Daily Affirmations

This week I want to share with you some of my favorite affirmations that really pump me up &  get my self-confidence going, especially when I am going through some hard times.

I hope these really help you & you give these a try on the regular. I find the practice of daily affirmations, speaking these into the mirror to yourself or just quietly to yourself, can really boost your mood & ability to push through difficult times.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • A lot of times we think that the world that exists around us isn’t something we have control over at all. We think that all the problems & troubles & defeats & even accomplishments are just coming at us & there is nothing that can alter that.
    • Or even our mindsets, we think there is nothing that can be done to fix our negative mindsets, mental health struggles or how to feel good about our lives despite the upsets.
    • But this isn’t true. We need to understand that we have the power to create change in our lives, in our own minds & even in our own communities & social groups.
    • Really the only thing you need to know is that if you believe you have the power to implement change, you are able to do it. It all starts with your mindset.
    • The reasons we don’t believe we have the power to control anything is because we feel powerless when things don’t go our way, even though we tried to control the situation or intervene. But you can’t align control with power a lot of the time. And just because some things don’t go your way doesn’t mean you don’t have the power to change what’s happening now or anything in the future.
    • The thing about power and control that you need to know is power is the ability to make something happen & control is the ability to make something happen the way you want it to. The biggest point here is you have the power to make changes happen, but it won’t always go the way you want it to & that most times, is a good thing.
    • We can’t predict the future or know how something is going to turn out, so as much as it sucks, we need to know the universe & God have your back & it’s going to work out like it’s supposed to.
    • We spend too much time focusing on having control over everything, when we really should just make our intentions known, believing what we want & need will come to us & do the work we believe we are meant to do to go along with that path, no more, no less.
    • Try this in the mirror today: I have the power to create change. And say it until you mean it & do it regularly.

  • I Accept Myself Unconditionally - My Favorite Daily Affirmations

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Monday!

    • This week I want to take a different turn from my normal, more specific mental health topics and turn to something a little lighter, daily affirmations.
    • Now, there isn’t too much to break down with affirmations, so these episodes will likely be shorter than normal, but still as important. Affirmations, if done regularly & genuinely, can make a big difference in your self-esteem & self-worth.
    • And this week I am going to share with you my favorite daily affirmations, how these help me & hopefully how these can impact you, if thought about daily.
    • Today let’s talk about “I accept myself unconditionally” and how powerful this can be if repeated daily.
    • This affirmation helps me so much because most of the time, this isn’t how I feel. It takes a lot of acceptance & love to accept yourself no matter what. Unconditional love is a big deal, whether from someone else or yourself. But I believe to do it for yourself, it’s so much harder because we are our biggest critics.
    • Do you pick yourself apart over every little thing? Do you tell yourself negative put-downs & criticisms often? I know, I do this too, but we need to work on pulling back on this behavior because it isn’t benefiting us.
    • I know it can be tough to accept all of our mistakes, failings, in-progress mindsets & bodies, but no amount of other people loving & accepting you will make up for you not doing it for yourself. There is no shame in continually working on yourself, which could mean a constant state of progress, sometimes, but that’s normal.
    • What you don’t know is that this is how most people live their lives, but pretend that they have made it.
    • Try this in the mirror today: I accept myself unconditionally. And say it until you mean it & do it regularly.

  • Magnifying & Minimizing - Cognitive Distortions

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Friday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Cognitive Distortions

This week I want to talk about 5 specific Cognitive Distortions & how these thought patterns affect us on the daily.

Cognitive distortions are unhealthy ways of thinking that can cause your mind to spin out of control. These can also lead to increased anxiety & depression.

More specifically it would be irrational & exaggerated thoughts that are highly based in negative thoughts. And a lot of times this thought pattern is habitual, which creates more problems as time goes on because this type of behavior isn’t helpful in the least.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • We are ending the week talking about magnifying & minimizing.  Magnifying is making small experiences, like making a mistake or forgetting to do something into the biggest deal ever. And minimizing is taking anything that is big & meaningful, like an achievement, and making it seem like the smallest, insignificant thing.
    • Simply, they will blow their problems out of proportion & minimize how important the positive parts of their lives are.
    • So with magnifying, it can be very common for someone to pick apart everything tiny thing that may have gone wrong in an experience, like messing up on a speaking engagement or presentation. But they can also be practicing minimizing by not acknowledging how well it went & how much everyone else enjoyed it.
    • Magnifying can also really increase your stress & anxiety because the bigger & bigger you make these problems, the more it becomes overwhelming to you. And with minimizing, by not making anything of all the positive things happening in your life, you will lack in self-worth, confidence & appreciation for all the wonderful experiences.
    • It’s seems that those suffering from panic & anxiety & perfectionism will really struggle with both of these because panic really takes hold of people & becomes too much to understand, but don’t want to point to the good things because it wasn’t good enough & believed deserves to be overshadowed by the mistakes.
    • So let’s chat about what we can do to cut back on both of these behaviors:
    • 1. You’re not perfect.
    • 2. You’re worthy of praise & acknowledgement
    • 3. Create a place to let those negative thoughts out.

  • Personalization - Cognitive Distortion

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Thursday!

    • Personalization is a cognitive distortion that really lays it on thick with the negative self-doubt & self-talk.
    • Those struggling with personalization will take everything that someone says & does as a direct criticism & response to who they are.
    • It’s those that are so caught up in their own mistakes, shortcomings that get let personalization lead the way. They use those negative experiences to define who they are. Which is obviously not what you want to do & it’s important to note that no experience defines who you are. It’s just not true.
    • Taking everything personally & not realizing that other people’s reactions toward us has a lot more to do with them than it does with you. And if you don’t know that now, you need to. It also has to do with heavily comparing yourself to others & deciding that other people are better or smarter than you & putting yourself down on the regular.
    • Making everything so personal to you is not only unrealistic, but really selfish. Why in the world would everything that others do have something to do with you? Why can’t it just be about them or just a random reaction? Insecurities are obviously in play here.
    • Let’s chat about some ways we can work on personalizing everything so much:
    • 1. Accept you’re not perfect.
    • 2. Stop caring about what others think about you.
    • 3. Don’t jump to conclusions. A lot of what others say, even about you, are projections from themselves.
    • 4. Don’t feed into the negativity. Don’t respond with negativity. Don’t feed into that trap.

  • Mind Reading - Cognitive Distortions

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Wednesday!

    • Mind reading! This is the one I have been looking forward to talking about the most because it’s the one I struggle with the most. Mind reading is believing you know what someone is thinking without having enough information to actually know. And again, I would lump this in with assumptions.
    • Mind reading is a dangerous cognitive distortion because it allows you to believe things that are generally not true, create a story in your mind & go on a spiral in your mind.
    • An example would be seeing a friend while out, but they don’t see you & you take that as them ignoring you on purpose, which can spiral into thinking they are upset with you, don’t want to be your friend any longer, and continue from there.
    • You see how thinking you know how someone is feeling can really send you on a mental journey that will mislead you & cause you to all turned around in your head. Also, it can ruin relationships if you opt for mind reading instead of proper communication.
    • And it’s fair to mention that a tiny bit of mind-reading can be appropriate if you are paring it with general social cues & reactions from others. Like telling someone something they weren’t expecting to hear & thinking they are surprised if their reaction shows that.
    • I want to share with you some tips on how to work through practicing mind reading less and less.
    • 1. Acknowledge the thoughts & predictions you are having about the situation. Really let those thoughts out & examine what those actually mean.
    • 2. Weighing the costs & benefits can really help you determine if this prediction is beneficial. Examine the cost of what you could lose with believing this prediction & what benefits there could be to having that prediction.
    • 3. Find the evidence that will back-up your prediction. Ask yourself what you actually know to be true. Is this thought out of character for the person you are placing it on?
    • 4. Test your prediction. This will involve confidence & you will have to reach out to the person your prediction falls on or have faith your mind is playing tricks and wait it out.

  • Over Generalizing - Cognitive Distortions

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Tuesday!

    • Overgeneralizing is something I don’t slip into too often these days. I’m way too specific with most things in my life & try very hard to keep an open-mind so I don’t get caught up in this distorted thought process, but I know this cognitive distortion affects many.
    • Overgeneralizing can be thought of as making broad assumptions about something from limited experience. So something like going out on a date but not being asked out for a second date can lead someone to think they will never find love or never be asked out on a second date because of that one experience. Another example: You go on a job interview & feel like it went bad & assume you won’t get the job & maybe no job you want at all. You see how this can spiral out of control so quickly?
    • This thought pattern will often include the use of words like, ‘all’ or ‘every’ or ‘always’ or ‘never’.
    • And you might be thinking, well I have been able to predict something happening the way I thought it would or my generalization was right, but only because the actions you took after having that thought led to you making it true. Like giving up on dating or never going on a job interview again.
    • Overgeneralizing isn’t helpful because it’s so limiting. There are too many factors in real life that contribute to what happens in our everyday lives. It’s a narrow view of what has happened & what will happen & how you see the situation or person. And when I say person, yes, this can include prejudices. You might meet someone of a specific cultural background & assume you know everything about people from that background from this one interaction.
    • And it’s the insecurities that cause people to give up & give in to these self-defeating thought patterns & force this to become a depressing cycle.
    • Overgeneralizing makes me think a lot about assumptions. I hate assumptions. I truly believe the phrase, “Assumptions make an ass out of you.” I also believe assumptions & overgeneralizations come out of thought laziness & a lack of perspective.
    • Something else about overgeneralizing that can help you understand it better is it’s like creating a rule for life based on 1 or 2 experiences. Again, VERY limiting.
    • So let’s talk about some ways to limit overgeneralizations.
    • 1. Become aware of this thought pattern.
    • 2. Making sure you’re grounded in reality before jumping to conclusions or decisions.
    • 3. Exchange your negative thoughts with positive thoughts.

  • Blaming - Cognitive Distortions

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Monday!

    • There are about 10-15 different cognitive distortions that have been identified, but this week I am only going to speak about 5. Today specifically we are going to speak about Blaming.
    • Blaming is the thinking pattern that you will either blame someone else, when in reality, it was the making of multiple people, possibly including yourself. Blaming can also be seen as being the victim. Because if you do have to have the attention on yourself, at least it’s more pitying & not negative.
    • One of the biggest reasons we will blame others is to get rid of the bad & icky feelings we have. By projecting those feelings on someone else, it allows us to not have to think about those bad feelings & the negative focus on is someone else.
    • Obviously, this isn’t healthy because blame-shifting & responsibility shifting isn’t right, especially for the person you are blaming or yourself because you aren’t owning the situation. And a lot of this has to do with protecting your ego & being in a position of higher status because the focus is no longer on you.
    • This can also relate to something called the Self-Serving Bias. This is when you take credit for something that goes right for you, but place blame on something or someone else when it goes wrong.
    • Blaming is the easy way out. It’s an exit from accountability, vulnerability & having to deal with what has happened. But it can also be very damaging to relationships if it affects those close to us or we get caught up in lies & blame-shifting.
    • Blaming can also be about control because if you have to admit that something didn’t work out as you had planned, you have lost control & that’s a terrible feeling for those that suffer from control issues & perfectionism.
    • If you are suffering from constant blaming, it’s important to try working on becoming aware of when you are doing it so you can cut back on this behavior. And also work on your self-worth, as this will push you to take on more responsibility & own whatever happens easier, as you feel that less external experiences have to dictate how you feel about yourself.
    • Lastly, if you are wanting to blame someone else when you know it isn’t the right choice, ask yourself these 2 questions first: What would I have to feel if I couldn’t blame someone else? & Why are those feelings hard to feel?

  • How to Practice Appreciation - How To Do It

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Friday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: How To Do It

This week I want to talk about various ways you can better your life by going over a few How To’s for personal development.

I hope these topics inspire you to keep pushing for your best self, to put yourself first & to understand that we are all a work in progress & you don't always have to have it together.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • Practicing appreciation is all about leaning into gratitude.
    • Taking time to be more appreciative in your life on the regular will help you get through anything & everything.
    • The power of appreciation will help ground you in tough & confusing times, but also boost happiness & positivity. It will also contribute to more kindness & compassion for others & yourself.
    • And appreciation doesn’t have to be a huge deal or something extravagant at all, it can be something really small, really insignificant to someone else or even something that is temporary.
    • Let’s break down appreciation a little more. Appreciation is the ability to understand the importance of something & really show gratitude for it. Whether that is an experience, a person or something physical.
    • And appreciation needs to be focused on more, as opposed to always believing that the future will hold the key to our happiness. That is not always going to be the case, but even if it is, we should not be discounting what is happening right now. Even if your life feels boring, feels dull, feels incomplete, feels stagnant, feels crazy & overwhelming, feels like it’s moving too fast, or feels like there is something missing. You have the ability to have less regrets by really caring for what’s happening now & not taking anything for granted or like it’s always going to be there.
    • Taking the time to focus on what we have, rather than what we want will really help to position our mindset to not always want the newest things & equating that with happiness. And I know I am talking a lot about things, but we must also think about this in regards to people. We need to not take those in our lives for granted. You cannot always count on someone to be there for you, it’s just not realistic or possible. We are all on our own journeys & moving through seasons of life that is a mystery to us.
    • Here are some ideas on how to show someone in your life appreciation: write them a letter sharing how much you love & care for them & want them in your life, send them a treat or flowers, take the time to see if there is anything you can do for them, make sacrifices to be there for them when it’s needed, & listen to understand not to judge or be opinionated.
    • Here are also some ways to show appreciation, in general: appreciate the small things, create a daily gratitude list, work on being less picky, volunteer, work on finding the silver lining in the things you don’t enjoy in life, tell others on the regular what they mean to you, even just how grateful you are they opened the door for you.
    • One of the most important things I want to mention is to make sure you appreciate what you have now before you are forced to appreciate what you had.
