  • Know Your Limits & Set Boundaries - Mentally Healthy During the Holidays

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Wednesday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Mentally Healthy During the Holidays

This week I am going to be chatting about some specific topics that can help you feel more mentally healthy during this holiday season.

The holiday season is the time where people will feel more alone, depressed & anxious than normal with the overwhelming amount of events, family functions & presumed obligations. I'm here to share some suggestions on how to navigate enjoying the season, budgeting, setting boundaries, ect.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • One of the easiest ways to build up stress & anxiety during the holiday season is to commit to too many events or not make sure your personal boundaries are set.
    • Personal boundaries will save you from getting yourself too deep into obligations & things you don’t have the physical or mental capacity to deal with or want to be a part for reasons you are not obligated to explain.
    • And the only person that is going to be able to set limits for yourself is you. You can’t expect others to do this for you or to even expect someone to just “know you” & understand what you should or shouldn’t be apart of based on the level of the relationship. No one should be expected to mind read.
    • This also means you need to be realistic with yourself on what you can actually accomplish & what is within your means of getting done.
    • Today I want to share with you some tips on how to set boundaries, especially during this holiday season, & protect yourself from over-doing it & getting too wrapped up.
    • Tip 1: Become More Self Aware. Check in with yourself & make real decisions on whether or not you can commit to requests & presumed obligations from others. Actually get to know your thoughts, emotions & feelings.
    • Tip 2: Know Your Triggers & Anticipate Those. Understand what those triggers could be, what emotions & reactions come with those triggers & the best way for you to respond that will be best for you & the situation.
    • Tip 3: Honor Your Needs. Understand that if you have the need to be with friends, spend time alone or engage in certain holiday traditions or rituals, that is your right & you & others should respect those needs. You have to give yourself permission to do what is right for you. Don’t let others dictate your needs.
    • Tip 4: Be Calm & Clear About Your Boundaries. Make sure you let people know in advance if your boundaries are going to affect them. This doesn’t give them a chance to convince you otherwise, but so they understand how you plan to honor your needs & personal choices. And be calm about it, knowing that you don’t have to explain yourself or need to convince anyone to accept these. It is your right to have boundaries.
    • Tip 5: Come Up With a List of Coping Strategies. If you find yourself struggling with situations & experiences around you, it’s best to have something already lined up to help you regain your calm, composure & sanity, in some cases. This could be a walk/run, listening to music, having someone on speed dial to talk it through with or just having an exit strategy.

  • Abide By Your Budget - Mentally Healthy During the Holidays

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Tuesday!

    • I know from personal experience how mentally challenging it can be to deal with purchasing gifts & participating in activities during the holiday season if you feel like your finances are tight.
    • It’s important to remember that you should be the only person that is putting any financial pressure on yourself in regards to anything. If anyone else is doing this & you are feeling forced to spend a ton of money on others or go all out on activities & such, you need to re-think that relationship.
    • There is absolutely no reason for you to over extend yourself financially because it may seem fine in the moment, but you will regret it in the long term.
    • You don’t want the mental stress that having to pay off heavy loaded credit cards & or loans would bring you, if you went that route.
    • And let me reiterate that if someone is pressuring you to spend more than you believe you can or is acting like they would be disappointed with a more affordable gift, you may need to rethink that relationship.
    • Today I want to share with you some ideas on how to lower the mental stress that comes with financial pressure during the holidays.
    • Idea 1: Swap Gifts for Get Togethers. If spending gives you anxiety, find a way to not do gifts, but a get together or an experience instead.
    • Idea 2: Set a Spending Limit. If you want to buy gifts, but are concerned with overspending, set a limit for yourself.
    • Idea 3: Go the DIY Route. It might be even better if you make an agreement with your friends & fam for everyone to do this so it’s an experience for everyone.
    • Idea 4: Set Priorities. Make sure you set your priorities for what you want to spend on for the season. Make sure you come up with an idea of how much the gifts will be, any activities & other events so that you can stay within your budget.
    • Idea 5: Remember the Reason for the Season. Gifts aren’t necessary.

  • Find Something You Enjoy About the Season - Mentally Healthy During the Holidays

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Monday!

    • The holiday season can be so tough on so many people, especially if you have had poor experiences in the past or are alone during this time of the year.
    • And I know that history can play a huge role in how we react to certain people & situations, but it’s important to realize that not every situation is going to turn out the same. Bad things aren’t going to constantly happen & if we give new opportunities a chance to play out, we might be able to log a positive experience in our history.
    • But if you do really have a track record of having bad things happen during the holiday time or just not being happy as much as you’d like, I want to encourage you to be diligent about finding something you enjoy about the season.
    • This is specifically what I want to talk about today because I believe we can get really all up in our heads about this time of year & immediately label it as terrible.
    • But if you continue to harbor negative feelings towards this time of year, how do you expect it to get any better or more enjoyable?
    • Here are some suggestions on how you can find ways to better enjoy this time of year:
    • Suggestion 1: Take a break from what you normally do & try something new.
    • Suggestion 2: Surround yourself with people that are enjoying the season & can be a positive influence.
    • Suggestion 3: Don’t try to over do it with too many obligations. Set limits for yourself.
    • Suggestion 4: Find an Opportunity to Volunteer

  • Complaining - 5 Types of Negativity

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Sunday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: 5 Types of Negativity

This week I am going to be chatting about 5 types of negativity we all struggle with at some point & need to focus on overcoming & breaking free from.

Some of these emotions can seem not as serious as I make these out to be, but are very important to work through because it's behaviors & feelings that are so wrapped up in who we are as people day to day.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • Complaining is such a common thing to do & genuinely, a lot of people don’t even know they are engaging in complaining when they are doing it.
    • It’s important to know that complaining is an ego boost for yourself.
    • The main reasons people complain is to feel righted in whatever the situation is, feel powerful when you initially feel weak & superior over whatever wronged you.
    • But just know these feelings are an illusion. Complaining is not going to make you superior.
    • Also, no one enjoys listening to others complain, so consider that next time you go on a complaining rant. If you want to rant, make sure it has structure & purpose, not open-ended negativity.
    • Today I want to share with you some steps to overcome complaining:
    • Step 1: Become aware of what is coming out of your mouth.
    • Becoming more mindful is a skill that will help with many things in life, but specifically with complaining, it should help you reduce what you actually say.
    • It’s the simple concept of think before you speak.
    • By being aware of what you are saying more often, you may realize you complain more than you think & this will help you nip this problem in the bud.
    • Step 2: Also be aware of who you surround yourself with. If you find that you are spending time with people that complain a lot, always have something negative to say or just are injecting anything positive into your time together, you may want to rethink how often you are spending time with them.
    • Step 3: Don’t feed into other’s complaining. Complaining shouldn’t be an event.
    • If you find yourself really wanting to get your complaint out, start by reflecting back on what went wrong before you talk negatively about it. By voicing your concerns & frustrations & reflecting on what those things mean to you or how those things affect you, it becomes easier to problem solve those things & not turn it into a negative experience.
    • If you find that you are stuck in the situation & all you want to do is complain to voice your negative feeling, consider changing your mindset & accepting the situation for what it is.
    • I know this doesn’t sound fun, but sometimes that is all you can do & having a neutral mindset is better & more useful than a negative one.
    • Step 4: Instead of complaining, take action (if you can) and make the situation better.

  • Worrying - 5 Types of Negativity

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Thursday!

    • Worrying is one of those addictive behaviors that can REALLY take over your life, much like the other behaviors I have spoken about previously this week. But it’s also one of those things that you feel like you can rationalize away, as if it’s nothing.
    • But when worrying crosses over into more of an anxiety feeling, it’s reached a point where it is going to take over your life.
    • As with everything, a little bit of worry here & there is no issue, especially if it is over a REAL problem, but a lot of times worry can shift over into worrying about multiple hypothetical situations & really introduce more fear into your life.
    • I don’t think I really need to make this episode really drawn out because we all understand what worrying is & how badly we can feel when it’s the primary emotion we are feeling, more so if you struggle with generalized anxiety disorder, because it’s like ever-present.
    • Today I want to give you 5 steps/tips on overcoming excessive worrying.
    • Step 1: Ask for help in figuring out your fears & concerns
    • Step 2: Be ok with some things being out of your control & accept uncertainty
    • Step 3: Practice mindfulness
    • Step 4: Schedule worry time
    • Step 5: Take a mental break

  • Self Doubt - 5 Types of Negativity

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Wednesday!

    • This is where I live & have lived most of my life. In self-doubt, cuddled up with it & letting it control almost everything. I know that sounds dramatic, but it’s true. And still dramatic.
    • Self-doubt isn’t an outwardly negative thing or something you would bring up first when speaking on what most represents negativity and that’s the reason I am bringing it up today.
    • Let’s just acknowledge that self-doubt is the place where dreams go to die. Where people become stagnant. Where you let fear rule your life.
    • I do want to mention that a certain amount of self-doubt, like most things, is totally fine, but only to a point. Self-doubt can definitely help you highlight what you should be working on & need to get better at, but still, only to a certain point.
    • And to me, self-doubt is considered negativity because it’s something that is preventing you from doing what you SHOULD be doing & suppressing what needs to be highlighted.
    • Self-doubt can make us question everything, like whether or not we are capable of accomplishing something or able to do anything well enough. And that’s how self-doubt comes to be, by being unsure of everything around them, lacking confidence & living in uncertainty around everything outside of their control & worrying about what may or may not happen.
    • And while we are here, let me share with you some organic ways that self-doubt can slowly take over your life: from past mistakes, childhoods that included never being good enough, constantly comparing ourselves to others, and fear of failures or successes.
    • Today I want to share with you 5 steps for overcoming self-doubt.
    • Step 1: Stop Asking for Validation
    • Step 2: Focus On Your Strengths, Not Weaknesses
    • Step 3: Examine Your Social Circle - Exit Negative Circles, Enter Positive Circles
    • Step 4: Know Who You Are & What You Stand For & Believe Those Things
    • Step 5: Stop Making Excuses - Don’t Let Fear Hold You Back From Trying

  • Judging Others & Yourself - 5 Types of Negativity

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Tuesday!

    • Today we’re going to talk about the negativity that comes with judging ourselves & others & what we can do about it.
    • Usually the reason we judge others is to help us feel better about ourselves. This is due to a lack in self-esteem, confidence & acceptance.
    • There could be an issue with relating to someone else’s beliefs & core values, we feel that person is somehow a threat or we just don’t know them well enough & that causes fear-based judging.
    • All of this really comes down to being insecure when it’s about judging others. We think it could be helpful to bring someone else down because it will rise us up, but it generally never works out that way or only for a very short amount of time.
    • When it comes to judging ourselves, this can point to how harshly we talk & think about ourselves.
    • It’s important to know that even with other people potentially judging us, we are still the hardest on ourselves. And it’s common that if we are judging others, we are judging ourselves even more harshly. With super high expectations, issues with lack of self-esteem & self-compassion, our ability to feel good about ourselves is really limited & almost impossible with the crushing weight of disappointment we put on ourselves.
    • Today I want to share with you some ways we can stop judging others & ourselves. I want to share 3 steps or ideas each for judging others & ourselves. Let’s start with judging others.
    • Step 1: Flip the Script (Understand From Their Point of View)
    • Step 2: Feel Good About Who You Are (when you love yourself you are less likely to try & tear someone else down)
    • Step 3: Find the Positive Instead of the Negative in Someone Else
    • No let’s move onto judging ourselves.
    • Step 1: Treat Yourself As You Treat Others
    • Step 2: Acknowledge Negative Thoughts But Don’t Engage In Those
    • Step 3: Fully Accept Who You Are - the Positives & Negatives as Working Together

  • Perfectionism - 5 Types of Negativity

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Monday!

    • If there is anything I am the queen of, it’s perfectionism. I have struggled with perfectionism since I was a child. Partly because of the expectations that were thrusted upon me & partly because I felt the need to always be the best I could be, even more so than others.
    • Perfectionism is a learned behavior & can develop from different experiences. And those that struggle with perfectionism tend to believe that they are only valuable because of what they can do for others or based on their achievements.
    • Perfectionism is considered one of the worst types of negativity because it can correlate with depression, anxiety, self-harm, & even eating disorders. There is a high probability that with perfectionism comes other mental health struggles.
    • Those that struggle with perfectionism have a fear of some sort of inner weakness being exposed if they don’t perform at the highest level or live up to others expectations. The deeper the perfectionism, the more stress that person brings onto themself.
    • There is also the problem that perfectionists are only happy when they reach perfection & since that doesn’t generally happen, happiness doesn’t happen very often. But it’s hard to get out of the trap of trying to be perfect at everything.
    • Today I want to give you some steps I think will help you overcome perfectionist behaviors. I have 5 ideas that could help you move on from getting lost in that mindset.
    • Step 1: Obvs Acknowledge Your Behavior & What It’s Costing You
    • Step 2: Think About What’s the Worst that Could Happen
    • Step 3: Be Aware of How You Speak to Yourself
    • Step 4: Manage Your Expectations (this will help with feeling disappointed all the time in yourself and others)
    • Step 5: Adopt a Growth Mindset (instead of seeing everything as mistakes & failures) & Enjoy the Process (instead of focusing on the end result)

  • Stress - Top 5 Most Unpleasant Emotions

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Friday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Top 5 Most Unpleasant  Emotions

This week I am going to be chatting about what I feel are the top 5 most unpleasant emotions that we all experience at one time or another.

The emotions I chat about today are all ones we have experienced in our lives, but may have struggled to overcome on our own. I want to share with you a few steps/ideas each day on how to overcome the burden these emotions bring & what to do moving forward.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • We all know that stress is unpleasant because it makes everything else in life overwhelming & unenjoyable.
    • There is an amount of stress that is healthy for everyone to experience on a regular basis, but when it gets in the way of everyday life, it’s a real problem. Stress can help you when danger is present, but when it comes from everyday events on the regular, it’s crossed the line.
    • Stress can come from any event that causes you frustration, nervousness or anger. It’s the body’s demand to a challenge or demand.
    • Here are some common signs of stress: headaches, stomach issues, insomnia, becoming sick often, feeling overwhelmed or easily agitated, difficulty relaxing, clenched jaw & teeth grinding, constant worrying, inability to focus & pessimism.
    • Today I’m going to give you 7 steps to overcoming stress in your life.
    • Step 1: Create Boundaries. Personal boundaries are lifesavers & just saying ‘no’ more often when you don’t want to do something or aren’t able to is super helpful.
    • Step 2: Shift Your Mindset. If you are struggling with Perfectionism, being a People Please or anything related, you have to work on shifting your mindset to more positive ideals & train of thoughts.
    • Step 3: Identify Your Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms. When you are stressed, what do you find yourself doing to deal with it that really isn’t working but you tell yourself it is in the moment? Habits like sleeping all the time, over-eating, pulling away from social activities, excessive drinking, or taking your feelings out on others isn’t the way to deal with your stress. Identify what your negative coping mechanisms are & replace those with healthier & more hopeful habits.
    • Step 4: Work On Time Management Skills. If you find a lot of stress stemming from getting behind on things or being late, work on creating a calendar system or todo list that works best for you. Even setting your clocks could help if you are chronically late.
    • Step 5: Don’t Let Others Meddle In Your Life.
    • Step 6: Exercise. Whatever type of movement you are into, do it to get that release of endorphins & experience relaxation & a bonus, being productive.
    • Step 7: Speak with a professional.

  • Jealousy - Top 5 Most Unpleasant Emotions

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Thursday!

    • Jealousy is super unpleasant because it’s something you feel deep down in your core. It kind of takes over your mind & prevents you from truly enjoying anything else in your life because you are so caught up in your own feelings of insecurity & unrest.
    • Jealousy can be seen as thoughts or feelings of insecurity, fear & concerns of not having equally distributed resources. It’s truly coveting what someone else has. It can also be the insecure feelings that can occur in a relationship when one person feels threatened by the actions of the other.
    • Some research says that jealousy in relationships is healthy because it will help you become aware of when a relationship is in danger of falling apart because of deep negative feelings. Fear of abandonment, low self-esteem and being neurotic also fold into jealousy in conjunction to relationships.
    • On the other hand, jealousy in regards to feeling envious or comparing yourself can only make you more aware of how deep your insecurity goes & how unhappy you are with your own life. Research says that specifically jealousy involves 3 people & envy, closely related to jealousy, involves 2 people. Jealousy will cause people to take precautionary measures to prevent the other person from getting attention else where or losing them completely to someone else. Envy is when you want something that someone else has.

    • Step 3: Don’t let your past wounds get in the way.
    • Step 4: Learn to free yourself from anger & resentment.
    • Step 5: Trust them or let them go.
    • Step 6: Accept that no one has it all.
