  • Anger - Top 5 Most Unpleasant Emotions

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Wednesday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Top 5 Most Unpleasant  Emotions

This week I am going to be chatting about what I feel are the top 5 most unpleasant emotions that we all experience at one time or another.

The emotions I chat about today are all ones we have experienced in our lives, but may have struggled to overcome on our own. I want to share with you a few steps/ideas each day on how to overcome the burden these emotions bring & what to do moving forward.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • Anger isn’t just the feeling of wanting to inflict pain or meanness over someone or something, but can often be the reaction of lost control & anxiety built up. It can be seen as hostile, when really it can just be an overreaction & the surface emotion for what is really going on.
    • Common emotions that can trigger anger are: sadness, anxiety, fear, shame, frustration, guilt, embarrassment, hurt & jealousy.
    • Anger is such an unpleasant emotion because it can trigger feelings & reactions  in others, cause regret later & again, not actually display the correct, true emotions that are happening below the surface.
    • There are actually 4 different stages of anger: trigger, escalation, crisis & recovery.
    • Today I want to give you 6 steps to overcome any troubles you may be having with anger.
    • Step 1: Take A Time Out. If you truly feel like you cannot keep any negative words to yourself, take a moment away to yourself to calm down.
    • Step 2: Try to Learn Your Warning Signs. If you are able to identify when you are about to get angry, it will be a lot easier to get yourself calm or figure out what’s wrong & move past it sooner. Warning signs that you’re about to be angry could be: Pounding Heart, Sweating, Clenched Hands, Raised Voice or Being Snappy.
    • Step 3: Don’t Pretend You Aren’t Angry. Hiding your anger is not going to help the situation or make anything better. Just deal with it as soon as you can, move through your feelings & move forward.
    • Step 4:  Don’t Hold Grudges. Don’t allow yourself to be taken hostage by your own bitterness developed from allowing the negative feelings to crowd out any positive ones. Choose to forgive & move on. Not forgiving is like drinking poison & expecting the offender to get sick & die. But instead it will always be you, because you’re the one choosing to hold onto the offense & pain.
    • Step 5: Talk With Someone You Trust About Why You’re Angry. Sometimes speaking with someone, whether it be a friend, & partner or a counselor can help you put everything out on the table & figure what you’re truly feeling, if it’s deeper than the surface anger you are experiencing, & figure out a solution from there.
    • Step 6: Confrontation Can Work, Too. If your anger is towards someone that has wronged you, I think it would be fine to speak with them about it, but you must do it calmly. If you are able to have a conversation without raising your voice, saying ugly or accusing words, then talk to the person about how you feel & figure out what needs to happen to move forward.

  • Anxiety - Top 5 Most Unpleasant Emotions

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Tuesday!

    • Let’s all just start by agreeing that anxiety sucks. It’s something that millions of people struggle with & many people feel stuck in & don’t think there is anything they could do to overcome it.
    • And let me mention that a little bit of anxiety is fine, but it’s when it is happening constantly & getting in the way of your everyday life.
    • And I know that some have found it necessary to take medication daily to cope with their anxiety, which is fine if it works for them, but I am here to share with you some ways to overcome anxiety that do not involve medication because that has always been my goal & desire.
    • But before we get to those steps, let’s chat about anxiety causes.
    • Anxiety can be established from so many events & experiences. From family experiences, work stress, emotional shock after a trauma or distressing event, loss of a loved one or a sexual/physical/emotional trauma.
    • And something to note is that maybe the list I just gave sounded extreme, but even the piling up of multiple minor stressors can contribute to major anxiety. And if anxiety isn’t treated & worked on, it can cause worse issues, like panic disorder, depression, high blood pressure & irrational anger.
    • Today I’m going to give you 5 steps on how to overcome anxiety.
    • Step 1: Start Setting Boundaries & Saying ‘No’ (define what your limits should be, communicate those needs, don’t feel the need to overexplain yourself & know why it’s important & enforce those limits)
    • Step 2: Live in the Moment
    • Step 3: Face the Fears Head On - Get to Know Them & the Worse-Case Scenario
    • Step 4: Find Ways to Rest & Relax - Find Calm Moments
    • Step 5: Talk It Out with Someone You Trust

  • Loneliness - Top 5 Most Unpleasant Emotions

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Monday!

    • Loneliness is one of those emotions that can catch you by surprise. Because you can be doing fine, have great relationships, but there can be a gap, a disconnect, between you & everyone else.
    • Loneliness is one of the most unpleasant emotions because it’s such a weighted feeling of isolation & feeling disconnected. Generally the person wants to be socially involved, but there is something that gets in the way. Whether that is lack of people or events to be apart of or low self-esteem & not feeling worthy enough to be involved with the chosen people or apart of the desired events.
    • And obviously, loneliness can hit those that depend heavily on social interaction to keep their mindsets right & attitudes positive, but it’s still something that can easily affect everyone.
    • And I would say that loneliness is a state of mind, not necessarily the act of being alone. Because being alone isn’t necessarily a bad thing, we all need time away from everything else. But because it is a state of mind, those feelings of emptiness, being alone & not worthy or unwanted by others that could help us break out of that loneliness, can really dig deep & become more permanent that it needs to or should.
    • Unfortunately, if loneliness is not treated, it can become a symptom of depression, drug-use, increased stress, poor decision-making & suicide.
    • Let’s talk about some ways to combat loneliness because just living through it will not cut it. You need to make a conscious decision to change your mindset & figure out how to experience loneliness less & less.
    • Today I’m going to give you 5 steps to overcoming loneliness.
    • Step 1: Understand You’re Worthy
    • Step 2: Invest in Quality Relationships
    • Step 3: Engage in Volunteering/Helping Others
    • Step 4: Try New Activities to Meet Others
    • Step 5: Get Help From a Counselor

  • Stop Avoiding Emotions - Stop Doing These Things

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Friday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Stop Doing These Things

This week I am going to be chatting about some behaviors & mindsets I encourage you to stop indulging in & practicing.

I know it can be super easy to get caught up in certain behaviors that are normal to us & that we are in the habit of doing often, but it’s important to realize what behaviors & mindsets that we are engaged in that aren't really helping us & causing us more harm or setbacks.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • What better way to end the week by talking about how we don’t like talking about emotions?
    • Now I am not going to spend a lot of time on this because I am constantly talking about why being in touch with your emotions is an important thing & necessary to knowing yourself better & becoming your best self.
    • But I do want you to know that it’s crucial that you figure out the best for you to express your feelings, whether in private and/or with others, it’s important you do not keep everything balled up inside.
    • And let me make mention of some benefits of bettering your emotional intelligence: better empathy & relatability with others, more positive relationships with others, & emotional resilience.
    • If you practice keeping your emotions all tied up & un-dealt with, you could develop anxiety or depression. But by facing your emotions full on, it can be a way to release whatever pain you are running away from.
    • And I understand the trouble if the reason you want to avoid your feelings is because you don’t want them to rule your life, but there are ways to achieve balance in this.
    • Today I am going to give you 6 steps on how to be more in touch with your emotions, but not let these run your life.
    • Step 1: Learn to Regulate Rather Than Suppress
    • Step 2: Identify What You Are Feeling
    • Step 3: Accept All Your Emotions As Valid
    • Step 4: Schedule It In
    • Step 5: Pause Before You React
    • Step 6: Learn to Vent in Healthy Ways

  • Stop Letting Fear Be In Charge - Stop Doing These Things

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Thursday!

    • Today’s topic is a big one, I believe. Because fear dominates so many of our lives & sometimes isn’t ever realized.
    • It’s so easy to misinterpret what worry, anxiety & procrastination actually are. These are all forms of fear & you need to know that.
    • And before I dive into more details on fear & how to overcome it, let me provide you with a Bible verse that could be comforting when dealing with fear. It’s from the book of Psalms, chapter 27, verse 1: “The Lord is my light & my salvation - so why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble?”
    • So let’s briefly chat about why we have fear. The primary reason for fear is to assist in survival. And survival can be something dating back to centuries ago, using fear to literally keep you alive all the way to now, with fear assisting in you keeping relationships together, keeping your job, not getting hurt by someone else or coming up with made-up thoughts to comfort you with your fear of the future & general uncertainties.
    • Now most of these things sound fine, because fear can stem from actual real life threats, but it can also come from imagined & unrealistic things seen as threats.
    • And the latter is the thing I want to focus on today. Because there are so many instances that we allow fear to prevent us from engaging in or going after what we want & need.
    • Now let me make mention that having fear is natural & normal & not something I think we should get rid of all together. It’s just when it gets in our way & is irrational (which we may not know at the time, unfortunately).
    • You could be keeping yourself in your own self-made prison made of fear because you allow it to keep you from things.
    • And the best to start the process of why these fears come up & how they hold you captive is to take the time to be introspective & figure out where these stem from. What is the origin of your fears?
    • Let me give you 5 steps to overcoming fear:
    • Step 1: Imagine the Worst Case Scenario
    • Step 2: Talk About It With Someone
    • Step 3: Boost Up the Times You Are Courageous
    • Step 4: Learn More About the Thing You Fear to Ease Your Fears
    • Step 5: Visualize Success

  • Stop Putting Yourself Last - Stop Doing These Things

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Wednesday!

    • Not sure if you expected me to talk about this subject this week, but here it is. I believe that many of us do not put ourselves first often enough.
    • And let’s just jump right into all the things that will happen if you do not put yourself:
    • You might end up putting the other person first at the expense of your needs.
    • You can easily become burnt out not attending to your own needs.
    • You can easily absorb someone else’s struggles & traumas as your own.
    • You have trouble saying ‘no’ & fear offending others.
    • You can become depressed.
    • I also wanted to share with you a couple thoughts that go through people’s heads when they think putting themselves last is the better thing to do.
    • They confuse caring with rescuing.
    • They think self-care is selfish.
    • We expect others to do the same.
    • We don’t realize our own worth.
    • And finally, let me give you 5 steps to putting yourself first more often:
    • Step 1: Set Boundaries.
    • Step 2: Create Priority Lists
    • Step 3: Ask for Help When You Need It
    • Step 4: Start Engaging in Self-Care
    • Step 5: Choose Your Friends Wisely

  • Stop Being a Perfectionist - Stop Doing These Things

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Tuesday!

    • Obviously I had to speak on being a perfectionist in my list of things for us all to stop doing because it’s such a prevalent problem many of us struggle with.
    • I have battled being a perfectionist since childhood. As an only child to my single dad, there was an expectation for me to be as perfect as possible, because he had the ability to show everyone up that he could crush it as a single dad.
    • I get it, you want to impress everyone on how well you raised your child alone, but it was tough. The expectation to be perfect for me was treating me like a token or a trophy. And I know that isn’t everyone’s experience.
    • Usually perfectionism come from pressure we put on ourselves or pressure from someone else that just wants things done a certain way, despite how you may feel about that.
    • So let’s go over a few ways that perfectionism develops.
    • Perfectionism is a learned behavior that can develop from the fear of letting someone down or disapproval from others. It can also stem from insecurity & inadequacy.
    • The main belief for those suffering from perfectionism is that they are only valuable because of their achievements or what they do for other people.
    • In addition to that, they can hold themselves to crazy high standards & believe they never truly hit the mark or perfection. It’s truly a never ending road of defeat.
    • If you are on the fence on whether or not you are struggling from perfectionism, here are some common symptoms:
    • Feeling like you fail at everything you try, regular procrastination, struggle to relax & share your thoughts/feelings, are controlling in personal & professional relationships & obsession with lists, rules & work.
    • After identifying what perfectionism is & how it can manifest, let’s mention some ways to overcome it. And know that nothing is a magic solution, but always something that will help you progress with success overtime.
    • I’m going to share with you 6 steps to help you overcome perfectionism:
    • Step 1: Identify the Underlying Beliefs that Drive Your Perfectionism
    • Step 2: Accept that Everyone Makes Mistakes
    • Step 3: Create Realistic Goals & Expectations for Yourself & Others
    • Step 4: Practice Saying ‘No’ More
    • Step 5: Challenge Your Inner Critic\Know You’re Enough
    • Step 6: Take Breaks & Practice Relaxing

  • Stop Being A Victim - Stop Doing These Things

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Monday!

    • This week I thought it would be helpful to talk about some behaviors & mindsets we all should be aware of & stop doing as soon as possible.
    • I know it can be super easy to get caught up in certain behaviors that are normal to us & that we are in the habit of doing often, but it’s important to realize what behaviors & mindsets that we are engaged in that aren't really helping us & causing us more harm or setbacks.
    • And it can be tough to have those honest moments with yourself to start the steps for change, but it’s absolutely integral that you do so.
    • Today specifically we are going to be talking about steps to take to stop being a victim.
    • Now let’s talk about what is & how victim mentality comes about.
    • From an outsider's perspective, those that have victim mentality can seem like they are very dramatic, but this mentality can actually derive from being a victim of a trauma or abuse situation. Having to endure negative experiences back to back can also cause this kind of mentality to happen.
    • And it seems that victim mentality rest on 3 specific beliefs: you believe bad things always happen to you, others or circumstances are to blame for those things happening & there is no sense in trying to change because it’s not going to work out anyway.
    • And those that struggle with this always seem to struggle with responsibility, not wanting to work on any change because they are so negative & don’t truly believe change will make a difference, along with feeling powerless & negative in your self-talk.
    • This can all take a toll on their emotional well-being, which is tough & can weigh heavily on them, especially with the mindset that nothing is ever going to get better.
    • And as I mentioned before, this can develop from past traumas, betrayals or codependency.
    • Now let’s chat about what can be done to stop being a victim. I’m going to give you 6 steps to try:
    • Step 1: Stop Blaming Others & Take Responsibility
    • Step 2: Work On Saying ‘No’ So You Don’t Do Something You Don’t Want to Do
    • Step 3: Practice Gratitude
    • Step 4: Practice Forgiveness
    • Step 5: Turn Your Focus Outward to Help Others
    • Step 6: Discover the Root Cause of Your Powerlessness

  • What Area of Your Life Makes You Feel the Best? - Helpful Journal Prompts

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Thursday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Helpful Journal Prompts

This week I am going to share with you some of my favorite questions to ask yourself during your journaling time, meditation time or quiet time.

I believe that asking yourself deep questions on the regular & engaging in self-discovery activities like these are very helpful in knowing yourself better & appreciating how far you've come & where you need to go next.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • This is a fun question because it helps you reflect on the things that bring you life, bring you joy, bring you happiness.
    • And maybe you are having a hard time identifying anything bringing you joy or happiness in your life because you are allowing the negative in your life to overshadow those joyful things. Sometimes joy is harder to see & feel, which is why sometimes you just have to choose joy & the feeling of it will follow.
    • I am trying my best these days to focus in on the positives & more happy things in my life because only seeing the negative will keep you down. Plus blessings abound for all of us if we choose to see it that way.
    • But I think this question is also a reminder of what you should spend more of your time on to create a more fulfilled & joy filled life. Wouldn’t you agree?
    • And I believe that if we are continually reminding ourselves of the amazing things that bring us joy in our life, we will be able to focus on those things so much easier & more often.
    • Here are some ways for you to identify if whatever it is really is the best:
    • You actually want to do it, not that you have to do it
    • It takes your full attention, happily
    • You feel a quick sense of reward
    • It’s both a challenging & creative outlet
    • Here are some examples of places that you might identify as the best parts: your career, your relationships, your health routine, how you manage your finances, your hobbies, or your goals/dreams.
    • Take the time to identify these things, as it will contribute to your daily joy & contentment.
