We discussed these topics and much more in this week’s episode of the Weekend Wellness Hour Show with sports psychologist and mental performance coach Dr. Toby Larson. Dr. Larson shared with us his journey into the sport and performance world after finding his passion in coaching but wanted to help athletes achieve at higher level performance goals.
Dr. Larson shared what sports psychology means and why it’s important for athletes typically in high school or older. He explained his approach with children in middle school or younger that differs when a student becomes more serious about a sport in high school.
We went through the process Dr. Larson uses when working with a client. He stressed the importance of identifying the athlete’s intention regarding the sport and his or her performance before making any changes.
Dr. Larson also explained how he uses visualization to help an athlete begin to see how to use all their talents and skills to perform at their highest level. We also explored self talk and mindfulness as tools depending on the personality of the athlete or where he or she is at in the performance journey.
We also looked at some of the fears facing athletes and how to address them so they don’t impact performance. Dr. Larson went through some additional tools he uses to help get past imposter syndrome as well.
Dr. Larson has a master's degree in kinesiology and a doctorate in performance psychology. While he began his work with professional MMA fighters, Dr. Larson now works with a diverse range of clients, including athletes and individuals pursuing audacious goals such as becoming world champions, game-changers, or industry leaders.
