In this episode of the podcast I discuss quality-of-life & improving overall well-being. Well-being by definition is the state of being comfortable, health & happy.
When it comes to improving anything in the body we need to become more aware of it. It's very difficult to change something you're not aware of.
Unfortunately at times people get caught in a cycle of negative behaviours & attitudes. This can contribute to higher levels of pain, low mood & low motivation.
In this episode I discuss why it is important to practice well-being on a daily basis, the effects of well-being on healing & recovery as well as different strategies to incorporate it into your day.
In this episode of the podcast I was delighted to welcome on Shane Finn (@ShaneFinn) to discuss the mindset, purpose, challenges & training of an ultra endurance athlete.
Shane has previously completed a 12 marathons in 12 days and 24 marathons in 24 days challenge for charity.
He has also biked & run across the USA, starting in California and finishing in New York in 36 days, all for charity.
We discuss coping strategies used to keep him on track, set-backs & injuries sustained along the way, toughest obstacles to overcome and how this has changed his outlook on life since.

In this episode of the podcast I discuss the signs of fatigue. The body will always tell you when you're doing too much. Becoming aware of these signs is key to reducing your risk of injury & illness.
In season athletes tend to focus too much on training and forget about the recovery aspect of training. Without adequate recovery the body never gets a chance to adapt appropriately to the stress placed upon it.
I explore what causes the body to break down, is overtraining an issue in amateur athletes and when is it time to schedule a recovery period. I also provide you a unique test to assess whether you are fully recovered or not from the previous day.
In this episode of the podcast I welcome on Adrian O'Brien, head of performance for Limerick Senior Football. Adrian is an excellent coach with a unique philosophy around movement & health.
We discussed the idea of movement restoration, building body awareness as well as reducing injury risk in athletes.
We explored the differences in managing amateur athletes in season and out of season as well as the effect of environmental stressors on performance & recovery.
Adrian gave great insight into the thought process of a high performance coach, as well as the mental side of elite sport.
In the episode of the podcast I was delighted to welcome on Dr Perry Nickelston (@stopchasingpain) to discuss all things holistic health.
We explore how emotions affect our physical body, as well as why it is so important to address beliefs & attitudes when looking at the health of someone.
The physical & psychological health & wellbeing of someone can not be separated and assessed individually as one will always affect the other.
The idea that no system works in isolation was a common theme running throughout this podcast.
Dr Nickelston goes into detail on how one system such as the lymphatic system can alter another like the immune system.
This podcast is for anyone interested in learning more about how systems in the body interact as well as how our mind & thought patterns affect our physical health.
In this episode of the podcast I discuss why a positive mindset is such an important part of the rehab process. Many people don't understand the effect of what a positive mindset can do for the body.
As no system works in isolation it is important to really take a holistic approach to rehab, especially when dealing with a long term, recurring injury.
I go into detail on how a negative mindset can be disastrous during the rehab process both physically & mentally. I then explore the idea of keeping a positive/optimistic mindset as well as how you can introduce it in your training & life.
In this episode of the podcast we take a look at injury flare-ups. A back or shoulder flare-up generally feels as though it is a random occurrence. However, there are usually multiple changes in lifestyle factors and routine that contribute to the initial increase in pain & tightness.
We explore what actually is a injury flare-up, why are some areas affected more than others, as well as what causes a flare-up and what you can do to prevent them.
In this episode of the podcast I discuss progressive overload & how it fits into a mobility training context.
Physical & mental training is based on the principal of stimulus/stress & adaption.
If a novel stimulus is placed on a part of the body, it will adapt to be better able to cope with that load in future, if given time to recover.
Once a new stress appears the cycle repeats - this in its essence is progressive overload.
We explore the benefits of using progressive overload when mobility training as well as the goals & effects it has on different systems and tissues in the body. Mistakes commonly seen when mobility training & applying overload are also discussed.
In this episode of the podcast we look at why we are prone to recurring injuries and what happens to the body after an injury that leaves it susceptible to another similar injury.
We all know a person who year after year suffers an ankle sprain, or repeatedly gets a hamstring strain in season.
Here we discuss how the nervous system reacts to injury as well as how the body may change loading patterns as a result of injury.
I explore common mistakes made during the rehab process that may increase risk as well as how you can reduce your risk of suffering the same injury repeatedly.
