In this Reboot Republic podcast, Rory talks with Assistant Professor in Economics from Trinity College, Dr Barra Roantree about the reality of income inequality in Ireland. We discuss what is inequality, wealth and income inequality trends, and look at what can be done about it through taxation.
Barra outlines the main findings of the ESRI report that he co-wrote, 'Poverty, Income Inequality and Living Standards in Ireland', which showed that income inequality has increased in Ireland in recent years, particularly for groups like Lone Parents (42% in deprivation). We also have a robust discussion on approaches to taxing REITs and a national state building company to solve the housing crisis.

  • 1108. There Is No Hope – Mahmoud Mushtaha in Gaza
    Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack
Listeners would be aware of one of our regular contributors, the young journalist in Gaza, Palestine, Mahmoud Mushtaha and his reports on the events in the area. He rejoined us to bring us up to speed on the latest impacts of the conflict, the growing problem of food insecurity (40% don't know where their next meal is coming from) and the increase in (illegal) settler violence.
We had some problems with Mahmoud's line, but please bare with it. His description of recently losing his friend and the feeling of being trapped by the Israeli blockade must be heard.

Longtime listeners would know journalist and friend of the pod, Hannah McCarthy, for her previous podcasts with us from Afghanistan, Lebanon and Ukraine. Well this time in a rare treat she was back in Dublin and joined me in the tortoise shack to tell us all about her recent trip accompanying Tanaiste Micheal Martin in Israel and Palestine.
Hannah, as always, spoke to some great sources and has great insights on the trip, Ireland's position, Israel/EU relations and more. A must listen!

    Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack
For the last few years we've done a member-only wrap of the week Sunday Show for our members. This week we've decided to lift the paywall and share the madness with you all. Joining us is Shrapnel cohost and future leader of lefty Irish twitter, Sam Mcilwaine. We talk libraries unable to buy books, the Stormont stalemate that's driving the case for reform, the gallows outside the Dáil and the main enablers within the status quo, the neoliberal "we need more unemployment" argument that's become a newspaper column, the 3 leaders at a pointless UN meeting and Trump worrying about the potential for World War II, (no really). Embrace the chaos.

In this Reboot Republic podcast, Rory and Tony are rejoined by Director of the global movement for a right to housing, The Shift and former UN Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing, Leilani Farha. They discuss where the financialisation of housing is at globally, how the real estate funds are still devouring up our homes. We take on the idea that we need Build to Rent REITs to provide housing, and layout how we can ensure housing should be delivered as affordable and as a human right, and why we should put it in the Irish Constitution.
Leilani outlines how governments have gotten into the business of producing homelessness. A great listen.

  • 1099. Wealth Taxes – Theory vs Reality with Prof Richard Murphy
    Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack
The have's and the have not's. Wealth inequality is the rat that has chewed up the social contract, but is a wealth tax going to address it and if not then how do we pull on the levers available in our current system to do so and perhaps most importantly, what are the implications for social cohesion if we don't?
Joining us again in the tortoise shack to talk about these big questions is listener favourite, Prof Richard Murphy. We talk why what looks good in theory doesn't work in reality and we go through some of his 30 (yes 30!) solutions to fixing the imbalance. Another belter from Richard.

  • 1101. Don’t Drink the Water – Lough Neagh
Join us and keep the mics on at patreon.com/tortoiseshack
Lough Neagh is one of the largest lakes in Europe and provides 43% of the drinking water for Northern Ireland. Yet it is in such a terrible state ecologically that wildlife are dying from drinking from it. So what gives?
We spoke to journalist Tommy Greene, who covered this slowly unfolding disaster before it became BIG news. He tells us about the strange ownership structure of the lough, the reasons it's inhospitable to life and the need for joined up thinking to fix it. There are, as we discover, two types of chicken shit; one that infects the water and one that infects our politics.

In this Reboot Republic podcast, Rory talks to Niamh McDonald, Coordinator of the Hope and Courage Collective, about their new report 'Greater than Fear', which provides lessons from communities in Ireland about how to create hope and solidarity within communities to stop the spread of hate and fear by the far-right.
We discuss the on-going protests and organising by the far-right around anti-Trans & LGBTQI+, sex education in schools, anti-immigrant and housing issues, but also the way in which mainstream politics is expressing their hate, and the need to engage and discuss with people around us and in our communities, take action based on solidarity, and the importance of the upcoming elections. We offer hope and ways to create an inclusive Ireland.

  • 1095. NAMA 2.0 and the Trumpometer
    Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack
Grab a beverage of your choice and settle in for a long but very, very good one with Irish-Russian Denver Colorado-based Prof of Economics, Constantin Gurdgiev, who returns for a chat about Housing and the Banks. But because it's Constantin and us it goes a lot broader than that. We talk about the climate change playing out in front of our eyes, NAMA 2.0, Bidenomics and the Presidential 2nd place nominee competition, his local Trumpometer and the media revisionist history commentary following Putin's killing of Yevgeni Prigozhin. A belter.
