Read the questions below:
1. Crime rates will fall as advances in technology make it easier to detect and prevent crimes. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Paragraph 1:
Completely agree because:
– Technology becoming cheaper every day, more video cameras available, easier to catch and a strong deterrent
– Furthermore, AI behind the camera recordings is getting better by the day, and therefore easier to detect and deter crime
Paragraph 2:
Completely disagree because:
– Even though tech is advancing privacy technology such as encryption is also advancing. Privacy legislation is also advancing considerably, such as GDPR in Europe.
– This makes it harder for governments and law enforcement to collect data and prove crimes, especially online.

2. Some people think employers should not care about the way their employees dress, but the quality of work. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Paragraph 1:
Completely agree because:
– A lot of people are now working remotely, therefore it is irrelevant.
– Old fashioned approach, dress codes are ‘relics of the past’.
– Not concentrating on a dress code allows the employer to focus on more important aspects, such as quality of work.
Paragraph 2:
Completely disagree because:
– Sets standards
– Avoids conflict (someone may find another colleague’s t-shirt offensive)
-While working, you are representing the company. Therefore, it is probably better to be smart and professional.

3. Some people think children should have the freedom to make mistakes, while other people believe that adults should prevent children from making mistakes. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.
SAMPLE ANSWER
Paragraph 1:
Children should have freedom to make mistakes because:
– more likely to see the consequences of their actions, probably speeds up learning
– having freedom to make mistakes will probably boost confidence
Paragraph 2:
Adults should definitely prevent children from mistakes because:
– The mistakes could be fatal
– The mistake could danger other children in the vicinity
– Could boost a child’s confidence because they know they can push it to the limit within a certain framework

4. Today, many people do not know their neighbours in large cities. What problems does this cause? What can be done about this?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Paragraph 1:
Problems of neighbours not knowing each other in large cities:
– Possibly increased crime rates because people do not know each other, possibly embolden criminals
– Makes it harder to respond to disasters as a community

Paragraph 2:
What can be done about it?
– The local government could organise local events such as sports competitions.
– The local government could start a local education program to bring adults together.
